Love the design. I wish it was wider. And as a crappie guy, instant reverse is a must to stay in place

If you need instant reverse I believe the fin style drive is the wrong kind for you. You should get a Old Town PDL series kayak. The PDL is my favorite propeller based drive....almost my favorite pedal kayak period. Performance of the PDL series is awesome. Can effortlessly hold position in current unanchored....via instant hands free forward/reverse.

I support free markets and competition. However, this video is misleading and some of the comments unknowingly call it out. Reality: the original patent on the Hobie drive ran out. The reason the drive doesn’t have the features of current Hobie drives, is because those are newer patents. I’m not a huge fan of overseas knock-offs, but if they’re not violating patents or trademarks, then it’s just business and the consumer can make their own decision. This video is way overboard on “American Made” and patriotic. Just call it an inexpensive pedal drive kayak. To call it anything else is the antithesis of what this country is about. There’s no innovation in monetizing an expired patent. It isn’t wrong, and like generic drugs, it creates value. Just call it what it is. Ask a simple question: If the original Hobie drive went off patent, why aren’t all of the major kayak brands leveraging the technology? Simple - some are, but under a different brand so they don’t risk the parent company brand when they get called out. At a minimum, just say who is really manufacturing the kayak? Do you actually know?

@KayakDIY4 жыл бұрын
Rommel Alba I don’t find myself using reverse much on fin style drives. I have never liked how the reverse worked on the M180. Still not hands free. Only kayak I found it useful on was my Hobie Tandem island. Otherwise I rarely used reverse on my other fin drive kayaks. I suppose if you really wanted reverse you could likely find a used Hobie M180 fin drive cheap and slightly modify it to fit the Lightning Strike. It is a really close fit from what I noticed. I just pack a small paddle and use that for the rare times I need reverse. Only time I consistently want reverse is when I’m trying to hold position in current and don’t want to anchor. However, I wouldn’t even be happy with Hobie’s reverse system for those situations. Fin drive is awesome for ability to go in shallow water, but the weakness is ability to easily go in reverse. That is where propeller driven kayaks work well. However, propeller drive pedal kayaks usually draft more and can’t go as shallow. So it is a trade off. No such thing as a perfect kayak. I just like all the other features on Lightning kayaks like molded grab handles, recessed snag free rudder, standard deck padding, and the front hatch which seals better than my Hobie Pro Anglers have. In fact this kayak is really well sealed and has smart design features.

The thick high grade stuff. Lightning Kayaks Use Rotomolded Super Linear HDPE. It is a premium kayak at a budget price. Even the hardware/accessories mounted to the Lightning kayak seems high quality and not the cheap Chinese stuff. This kayak should last. Great review, congratulations. Indeed, it even seems that the manufacturer has fixed all the issues we saw in recent Hobie releases (Outback 2019, Compass and Passport), adding value in copying and enhancing Hobie solutions (except the pedal, which seems to be Hobie's MD V1 , 2008, whose patent has expired). We only have to know if this hull has the same multi-purpose lakes, river and sea features of the old Hobie Outback. If you have the hull characteristics of the Hobie Outback by 2018 and the build quality of the Hobie, it will be wonderful, as we see increased traking when kayaking is propelled with the paddle. And with almost 1,000.00 USD less.

Iowa Matt because they likely got the aluminum rails sourced from China. They used plastic track rails originally, but switched to aluminum. So they sent me the upgrade kit. They make the kayak in USA. Just small components like the tracks might be sourced overseas. Common practice for small companies growing. Making every little component requires lots of tooling and employees to keep up. If they did source components from China I can’t tell. The quality is top notch. By the way I’m from Iowa! The hull is made in the USA with premium quality plastic like Hobie kayaks. The Lightning kayak is manufactured & assembled in the USA. They likely get the aluminum track rail accessories sourced in China like many other kayak companies. It is still MADE IN THE USA. The kayak is dang well made. They even put 3M seals under their hatches and some of the stainless screws have O-ring seals. This kayak is built very well.

The music level is way too loud for headphone users btw. Impressive kayak for the money. Basically copy Hobie’s design, tweak it a bit, fix the obvious flaws and sell it for cheaper. I like the seat adjustment for up and down as Hobie’s and Bonafide’s designs are much too complex and will ultimately break. Also, did Lightning pay you to do this promotion for them or are you sponsored by them? You seem to be pushing it way too hard to not be reimbursed by the company. Transparency in this matter would be appreciated by the viewers I’m sure.
@KayakDIY4 жыл бұрын
*In video description I had a disclaimer stating the kayak was provided free for review. However, this has become such common practice in the world of KZbin and paddlesports I honestly thought it was common knowledge for my viewers. Aside from that Lightning kayaks has not paid me to make a review. I haven’t been given money from a kayak company to make videos for 5yrs +. Only time I was ever given money was from Pelican International and it was so I could customize kayaks and buy materials. Lightning kayaks never gave me any expectations. They just sent the kayak and said go have fun. We don’t even have a contract of any kind. I get several kayaks a year from all brands. Some I like a lot and others are so so. Some are so bad I ask the company if they really want me to make a video or if they want the opportunity to fix their product. For instance I tested an inflatable kayak that was terrible and developed mildew after two days due to being so hard to dry.* As for the audio, I appreciate the feedback. I have since then gotten better microphone setup. The problem was I didn’t have a good microphone so I had loud and soft parts in footage. Then I tried to audio adjust and computer makes it sound louder than the phones. It is just bit hard to gauge how much to boost audio in editing software. Well with new microphone I likely can leave audio alone and not boost it at all. It seems to pick up fine now. Sorry for blasting your ear drums. 😉👍

Fin drives win for torque and acceleration on straightaways. They are close in speed compared to popular prop drives (favorite being Old Town). The fin drives win in shallow water. @KayakDIY4 жыл бұрын
For years Hobie sold pedal kayaks like crazy that required flipping drive around to pedal backwards. People didn’t seem to mind and caught several fish. Kayaks only recently developed power pole mounting in their designs. I’m sure I could find a way to mount a power pole. I don’t usually use one though. I kind of like manual stake out poles. I feel I can better control my position. However, power pole is really convenient and I’m sure I would like one.

No one said it was shitty when Hobie had the same drive for 15yrs+. The drive isn’t great if you have to go in reverse. It can be done by flipping drive backwards. However, where it shines is in its ability to run really shallow. Prop drives can’t go as shallow. This drive will get you further than most people can paddle comfortably. Just need to weigh what is important to you. Might not be the kayak for you. 🤷♂️

Why would an American made product have Asian writing in the accessory pack
@KayakDIY4 жыл бұрын
Most kayak companies have hardware accessories that are are imported. The kayak hulls and majority of labor is in the United States. I grew up in a small U.S town. My dad is an engineer that dealt with Asian companies producing parts for a local business. Small businesses in the town have to outsource some small labor intensive parts because they don’t have the labor force or tooling to make every little part. Yet their products are still considered made in the U.S.A. This kayak might have track mounts imported but all the rest of the kayak that matters is clearly made in the U.S.A. My kayak has been stored outside in the florida sun and still looks great. I paddle/pedal saltwater and it has been great. It is definitely an American made quality kayak. Some Asian made kayaks are great too, but it is hit and miss. FeelFree and Vibe are made in Asian countries and are great quality kayaks. Lighting Kayak is a quality USA made kayak that simply appears to have simply imported some small hardware. My kayak came with replacement tracks and hatches. That is where you saw the Asian writing. The company switched from plastic tracks to nice aluminum ones. They also switched from screw hatches to twist lock ones. Those components are likely imported but appear to be high quality parts.

Reason I like this brand is they still kept their prices pretty low. I obviously sensationalized the made in USA part for fun. There are a lot of USA kayak companies but I think Lightning has been good about keeping prices low for the quality they deliver.

Wow... so what you are saying is Democrats aren’t patriots. Thanks for this comment. If you aren’t a patriot then you are the enemy and part of the problem in this country. If you don’t love this country then get the hell out of it. Countless immigrants travel here for a reason. Pride in products being made in one’s country is not something to be ashamed of. ✌️ out

@@KayakDIY Whereas cosmopolitan conservatives often supported international cooperation and admired elite culture in other countries, fascists espoused extreme nationalism and cultural parochialism. Fascist ideologues taught that national identity was the foundation of individual identity and should not be corrupted by foreign influences, especially if they were left-wing. Nazism condemned Marxist and liberal internationalisms as threats to German national unity. Fascists in general wanted to replace internationalist class solidarity with nationalist class collaboration. The Italian, French, and Spanish notion of integral nationalism was hostile to individualism and political pluralism. Unlike democratic conservatives, fascists accused their political opponents of being less “patriotic” than they, sometimes even labeling them “traitors.” Portuguese fascists spoke of “internal foreigners” who were “antination.” In the 1930s some French fascist organizations even rejected the label “fascist,” lest they be perceived as beholden to Germany.

Why because it costs less and is made with pride in the company’s home country of the U.S? What don’t you like? I realize I went a little crazy with the USA theme. I live in USA and obviously have pride in my country.

Yeah…Patriotism is so cringe. Maybe instead of kayaking we should just burn 🇺🇸 flags. Definitely shouldn’t have pride in products being made in our country. That is so horrible. 😉 (intense sarcasm)
