The SNK805K2 (olive green dial) was my first automatic and most definitely my gateway into the world of mechanical timepieces. I wore it 24/7 for the first year, removing it only when swimming and at TSA security. I showered with it daily. Never had a hint of water infiltration, so that 30 meter water resistance is legitimate protection from anything short of prolonged submersion. I wore out the nylon strap in that first year and now it lives on a brown leather strap, which compliments the subdued green watch dial beautifully. I still adore that little Seiko and wear it about 2x weekly. It's a fantastic value in an automatic wristwatch.

Got this 3 years ago and popped a sapphire crystal on it. looks great, 0 scratches. It has effectivelty pushed back on all of my impulses to get something more prestigious so far. Sapphire may strike some as out of place on a simple watch but it hugely adds to its jewelry appeal. Timekeeping is nothing spectacular but sufficient and very excusable given the pricepoint as an automatic.

This model has been around a VERY long time. I feel I can say with experience there is a very good reason for that and real wear extended use in my case has proven it! It was my very first Seiko and my first mechanical watch that I ever owned that I actually chose for myself. I got this watch when I was in my last few years of high school. I wanted something cheap (poor student and all that jazz) but I also wanted a Seiko (I blame Dad and all those Roger Moore Bond reruns I had to endure lol). Anyhow this was the cheapest and I also really loved the unusual setup for the dial. I wore it every single day through school and was my main watch for many many years after. It had knocks, bangs, hits... you name it, it endured it. Almost 20 years later, the thing is almost still in as good condition as the day I brought it and the I found that the time keeping was very very good (maybe I got very lucky with my specific 7s26? module). Whilst it doesn't get as much wear now (unless I'm feeling nostalgic) You'd honestly be surprised how well this little beater has withstood time and how well I feel it was actually put together from an aesthetic design standpoint. The sandblasted case and bracelet has meant that the thing does not generally show any wear scratches at all- and the same can be said for the recessed watch bezel. I have one minor albeit deeper scratch on the stainless bezel, but because of the sandblasting its almost unnoticeable as it blends in. This sandblasted finish really is very durable and its a shame its not used more often, given how scratch resistant it has been on this Seiko for me. I don't think people also don't give Seiko's Hardlex enough credit for regular daily use. I did not wear this thing with kit gloves at all- trust me on that, and the crystal is still in a great condition. Mine still looks almost new. When I hear people say 'Hardlex will get scratched to death" I have to ask "What the heck are they doing to it?!" I do wonder too with the shown Seiko 5 in this video lol. It looks like it has been hit to death with '1 grit' all afternoon lol (DankPods reference... check out his iPod vids here on KZbin and you will know what I mean!) I don't know if the quality is the same now as mine from 20 odd years ago but if I was looking for great value mechanical 'Daily beater' then this is it. Hands down no questions asked :)

I picked one up last week for $60 US taxes all in and although I first thought it was a bit small I now love it's small size. It is refreshing to wear something that is so light and unobtrusive compared to the current trend of heftier watches, and the mattish case finish along with the simple dial aviation feel is a pleasure to look at. I swapped the standard 'itchy and scratchy' black nylon strap for a nice leather one I had lying around. A great wee watch. Another great review my man !

My first automatic watch! I had it and wore it nonstop over the course of 8 years. Did everything from weddings to mountain biking to the top of the Great Wall. The hardlex is pretty scuffed up now, but the case is surprisingly pretty clean. It bit the dust when I caught the flu, and put my watch down on top of the magnetic strip of an ipad cover. I woke up 24 hrs later in a fever delirium, only to see my watch had gone 2 days into the future! Talk about disorienting. I think the balance spring got tangled on itself as well as magnetized. I plan to drop an NH35 into my old companion at some point, but keep the dial, hands, and day/date wheels-- reward for a job well done.

Hey mate, great review as always! I couldn't resist and picked two of these up during the holidays, the SNK809 for $52 and the beige 803 model for an unbelievable $43 bucks! I put leather nato straps on both, light tan on the 809 and chocolate brown on the beige model. For me they are smaller than I like to wear on my 8-1/4 inch wrist, but I wanted them for the collection. Probably will end up giving to family/friends.Thanks!

I bought one with the black nylon strap and put a heavy, square edged brown leather with white contrast stitching. Looks great. I’m glad I went with it instead of the SNZG15. My wrists are 6.5” ish. I think the larger watch is a. too big and b. period incorrect for what is quite a vintage looking watch. Also, the trend for oversized watches is receding somewhat. And if I want a big watch, I have an SKX007 (rubber strap). Even with small wrists, a diver looks right. It’s supposed to look big and chunky.

I’ve had mine for almost a year and it works great. A lot of bang for the buck. Accuracy for me is about -30 seconds a week (your mileage may vary) - not great but can be adjusted if needed. Water resistance is 30M rated - I’ve showered with it many times and it holds up fine. For the price, it’s hard to beat with what you get.

I wanted a seiko and the snk was my first one, I went with the snk803 solely because of its price when I got it, just $45 on Amazon back in November. Loved the watch so much and its cream color looks so nice that I decided in the future I will get another one. It happened in late December, the olive green snk805 was marked down to just $47 along with the snk807 (the blue one) and since the all green combo looked good in the pics I knew it was the one to get instead of the blue. So glad I did it, looks great when I want something not too sporty and not too elegant or dressy like my Orient. Just think about that, $92 including shipping for two new Seiko automatic watches with great quality and beautiful colors, I don't think that can be beaten with any other brand. I suggest you to look regularly on Amazon for them, from time to time they drop a lot on their normal price (currently above $60) and they can get even below $40. Just be patient. And btw, although they are men watches they look great on ladies too because of their small size and minimal style. A friend of mine has an 803 and it looks really good on her.

Great review on these little gems. As others have said, for the price point, you really get a great watch. I have two of them, one is the khaki green dial, and the other is the more rare red dial one, with the black tipped seconds hand. Both are on leather bund straps. The khaki green one is on a deep tan bund, and the red one is on a black bund (wearing this one as I type this). And yes, the accuracy of the 7s26 movement consistently exceeds the stated standard that Seiko gives it. Very satisfied! Keep up the awesome reviews, Jody! Cheers!

1. Hardx scratches can be buffed free of scratches with pruducts like Polywatch and even toothpaste. To find the cheapest Seiko: Amazon > search mens automatic Seiko > tick the Seiko box under "brand" > select "low to high" in the sort drop down box. Don't forget to take a peek at "other sellers" for bargains. Why do watch reviewers always point out the 7S26 doesn't "hack or hand-wind" but always fail to mention that it has a day/date complication that is incredibly easy to set. It is very easy to "hack" this movement by applying a little reverse pressure to still the second hand. This is a great watch. Looks great. Solid movement. A Seiko. Owned one but gave it to a nephew. No need to spend more on this style. Seiko nailed it for a terrific price.

I would also point out that the supplied Nylon strap is actually quite nice and comfortable, and its very thick and wont be coming apart any time soon. That said, I have my SNK8xx in green on a DeBeer "Swiss army" strap, but really only cause I got it for free, and it makes it look like a real 30s or 40s fleiger.

I have every color of this variant including the Red dial SNKM95 Amazon exclusive. I enjoy these little watches just as much as my divers and my Hamilton mechanical. These little watches are actually underrated on the w.r. and are just fine for water sports and swimming. I just wouldn't trust going diving with it. There is a guy on what they makes crystal protectors for this watch. You can also just buy sapphire crystal as liitle ad $25 from Crystaltimeslike I have. Once you install a sapphire crystal, this easily feels like a higher end watch costing much more. I don't know if this is going to continue, but as of now It is very hard to find one of these watches new under $60. All the main places that I know of that have them for $60 or less are out of stock. Most everyone else that has them are between $70 to $100 or even higher. I do this is just a temporary out of stock issue and not permanent. These watch are actually worth the extra money, but it will definitely kill the demand a lot if the price stays at above $70, or more.

Waktosha 73 theres no o-ring on the crown, hence the 30m rating. I wouldn't dunk one under water. Buy a vostok amphibia for swimming at the same price
@waktosha73787 жыл бұрын
Matt Yes it does have an oring in the crown. I know that for a fact first hand. I don't like the vostok amphibia. They are just too crude, and they are not accurate at all unless you just get extremely lucky. They are just too much all over the place to get a good regulation on it in general. BTW, I have Seiko diver's and a couple Orient diver's watches. Honestly, Seikos cheapest SNK809 and variants are way more quality than a vostok amphibia, but if the vostok amphibia is the watch you like, then enjoy it. There's nothing wrong with that.
@matt43987 жыл бұрын
If it has an oring it should be more than 30 meters

Matt Seiko just underrated the water resistance on these watches. One of my little SNKs has been at the bottom of a pool with no problems. I don't hesitate to go swimming with one of these on. Most field watches only have 3 atm water resistance, but are usually fine if it is a reputable watch, not cheap garbage. Pretty much all Seikos are more water resistant than stated.

So Jody last night (so much excitement on a Saturday for me) in my search for parts to build a watch having found Seiko AR Crystals at Crystal Times I found a SNK809 case for 4 quid okay it was brand new and shipping was 17 quid now when you add all the bits and after 2 hours of searching it was well over US$120 so my thinking is buy a cheap one already built and buy a sapphire crystal US$35 so if you can pick up an 809 for US$65 at Jomas b4 US$s0 discount and pop a sapphire in I reckon you are quids in the watch is US$45 the crystal is $35 so $80 is about AU$104 w/o shipping and crystal install you can barely beat that doing it yourself - how do Seiko do it I have to applaud them for that - new love for Seiko - cheers for the video cos that got me thinking EXCEPT the water resistance that was my previous point and is now so close.

What more can you say ? Okay, stock bracelet clasp is crappy and the good old 7S26 is not hackable, but at 60ish USD, with that good look and better time keeping than Seiko official spec, the value for money is really strong. Gotta love the SNK800 series.

I have the 809, definitely not good for nato straps as you would think. The lugs are so short I literally cant fit my 2mm nato strap between the lugs and the case, as well you can tell the watches were just thrown together parts and wasnt truly meant to be an open caseback as the lugs themselves stop before the protruding caseback. Throwing a nato on makes it bulge downwards making it super uncomfortable.

But, true compared with the others Seikos it does not appear that small, not as I thought. On a nato it is fine, makes the watch larger. The Bond nato is perfect and yes an army green would be fine, What about a sand coloured or beige? Guess the would fit fine too. 😊

Do they do Emu and Roo watch straps? Saw a Cane Toad strap in a shop in Daintree 🐸 ⌚

I used to use one of these as my work watch instead of my more expensive Seiko and Swiss automatic watches...

I am getting my first automatic watch. What should I choose? A Seiko 5 snkl23k1 for 140 dollars or a Seiko 5 SNK809K1 for 100 dollars.

Seiko 5. You can't go wrong. A true market leader at this price point. Got 2.

I have owned watches at all price points 7000 $ Rolex milgaus to 89 $ Orient. For different reasons all metal bracelets have disappointed me. I always just put them on a nato. Primarily because it lightens the watch as I find heavy watches to be super annoying. Then there is price. Metal bracelets from the manufacturer are the most over priced thing in the watch industry. Try getting a replacement bracelet for a date just over one thousand $US .

I’ve seen it under $30 with the canvas strap witch I think is much better than that awful folded link bracelet

Doug Le. In southern Ohio there was a unclaimed freight store that was called the flower factory that is closed now cause the owner had some tax problems they were $27 and he had some orient makos for $65

There was an older version of this watch which had (in my opinion) nicer looking hands and also had reversed hour and minute markings. Sadly I think its been discontinued.

I think sapphire would look like Nick's Seiko 5 if he had used it as a hammer as well sir. Hardlex is actually very scratch resistant.

Check out a website called camelcamelcamel.com - you paste the URL of an Amazon listing and it shows you a graph of the price of that listing over time. It's really good for seeing if a "sale" is actually that much of a saving. The cream dial SNK803, for example, was $34 in May 2017!

Love the Seiko 5's, super easy to mod. Love the t-shirt, 'he's on fire, going into the swimming pool!'

Anyone else here that was sent from the latest Berney vid? Also, who's this young guy, with a designer stubble, presenting this vid? Also, also, if you don't have this Seiko 5 in your collection, you're missing out on something very beautiful!

I wish Seiko will issue this watch with 4r36 movement and 100m WR. But in view of Seiko current trend in their pricing, this upgrade will make the watch cost something in the region of USD200-250.

Might I suggest you review a Tiger Concept watch? Taking inspiration from your affordable Submariner Homage video I looked into Tisell when I came across Tiger, and being 149 - 169 USD it seemed reasonable, customization was a plus :p

Again a great review. It is a nice and modest Seiko and the price is ok. Just the non-hacking and no handwinding, that is not great if you own more than one watch. But what a brilliant T-shirt man , and what's up with the little figure with the crocodile? Is it a Dundee😁.

Imo after owning one... just get a quartz at this price. You’ll get more. Don’t fixate too much on having an automatic movement.
