Painting the negative space changes the way you think about things. I've seen some amazing work on this - so unique!

I love your longer art tips!! Beautiful painting. I'm amazed at how well it interacts with the watercolor. It's almost a gouache effect without the chalkiness.

Thank you for this tutorial and advice on black watercolor paper. Your talent and techniques continue to both entertain and amaze me. I will check out the black paper.

That is a pretty painting. I've seen black watercolor paper demonstrated before; but, have never tried it. I like the longer demonstrations where you are actually showing how to use a product.

I love being introduced to new paper in a how-to-do demo. The easy going jazz music really held my imagination to enjoy an atmosphere of the happy fish swiming through to water. Black watercolor paper, with watercolor fish in a water setting do so belong together. Thank you for the best how-to demo ever.

Glad you are showing this paper, from my limited experience with it, it is great. The only thing I would add and I hope it is okay, it really is sensitive to tape. It really needs a very low tack tape. Something along the lines of washi tape. I still use Joe Millers trick of sticking it on my clothes before I put it on the paper. I visited with Matt at Legion, he said this was his baby and he is very proud of it for sure. I am getting ready to do some snow scene Christmas cards with it. Julie the fish was great!! Wow are the large sheets great, all I have is the 9 x 12 package. Sorry I said great too many times, but it is special.

Interesting that you're having to preserve your darks - sort of backwards of watercolor rules of light to dark, but with a twist of layering like in airbrush. You could go mixed media with pastels on that fish for a stunning effect. Thanks for braving it!

Hey, go to your phone settings and then display and brightness and select, “never” and the screen will stay lit. Lol beautiful work!

I was looking through the posts to make sure someone hadn’t already said this, and you did so I won’t. I also agree that Julie’s work is impressive. I love watching her paint.

I love your style! If you want to see if you like painting in this negative color space you can also get this effect by painting a regular piece of watercolor paper black, dark blue or very dark purple to see of you like it before you invest in the black paper. I just did it with some metallics and the result is interesting. It's a whole new world!

Depending on the solubility of the underpainting you could incidentally pull up some of the pigment when you apply the new layer, just a friendly reminder.

Is it 20" x 30" cm ?? Is there a 11x15 inch or bigger black paper available?

Unless you took the photo you are copying someone else's artistic work. It's OK for practice or personal use, but not to sell unless you have permission from, and give credit to, the photographer. (I'd give credit either in the video or underneath in the video info.) I think this is important to mention so that your customers know. Copyright and ethical practices are important and as a business you have a great opportunity to educate your customers and the public. Other than that, this is a great demonstration for which I thank you.
