This gorgeous, converted sprinter van was built primarily as a work vehicle. It has everything TR needs to live comfortably on the road, including an amazing murphy bed! We hope you are inspired from some of the fantastic ideas in his build!

I like this van because it’s not about being pretty like an upscale apartment. It’s about functionality and being usable, but it’s also got some luxury and amenities like that kitchen and coffee maker. the power sources are truly the most important thing. For myself, I would want the sink to be even bigger so I could really wash my hair and my dog in it - not at the same time. this is a great build.

I like the sink you bought from IKEA. Also liked that the tour started inside the van rather than outside.

Outstanding van conversion ! I really connected with what you said about your work and how your clients expect you to present yourself. I think that bias happens with other people as well, even in van life. I would not be able to afford repairs on a Mercedes vehicle but I can afford my 2012 high top E250. And even that statement always makes me grateful and cognizant of my privilege. I am a part time van dweller, traveler. I’m out on the road when I can or want to be and home the rest of the time. ❤ Thanks for sharing your rig and story ❤

Very cool set up. I use webasto diesel heater a lot as well. Best way to avoid or limit it from gumming up is to always turn it on every time on it’s highest temperature setting for at least 5 minutes before dropping it to your comfortable temperature setting. I serviced mine over 4 years ago and no more gumming up or carbon deposits yet. It’s still working good.

Amazing interview to be watched more than once. His power source is one to study! I appreciate the Murphy bed, and some of his other ideas, but mostly I like his overall functional and intentional design. I felt as I was viewing that this van lifer is on a journey of renewal and he has graciously bared some of his journey in this interview. To have the mind that he has and that he can put it to such use is skill and artistry at its finest. I imagine if he wanted, he could have a constant customer flow and a large waiting list for van rebuilds.

I understand why Bob said we would be drooling, its a man's van not a woman's van. No fancy stuff in there but men would love it. I would have to have some pretty things in there. Very practical and I fully understand why his wife does not like travelling in it. It is like a shed on wheels.

Here on the east coast the sprinter vans are used quite allot for work vans, delivery trucks, you see them more and more everyday I think it's because they are large enough to create a work space inside but also the reliability and longevity of the diesel engine to get possibly 300,000 miles out of an engine is great, the upfront cost is more than the Ford and Ram but if you figure that your only service every 10,000 miles and you get more use out of it there is a cost savings over time.

I have reservations about driving a nice expensive van such as Mercedes. I prefer to "blend in" with "normal" everyday looking van. That is especially true as the economy worsens. I like how you built your Murphy bed without 2 X 4's.

Nice work TR! Functional, aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. ❤ I'm currently in a (2011) 170", but my mods inside look SO amateurish next to yours. It's still a 'work in progress', but I should be ready for some semi-FT trips very soon (as long as some unexpected mechanical issue doesn't pop up and hemorrhage my savings with repairs). TR, I was curious, have you considered building out a retired ambulance ? I could totally see your similar setup in one of those rigs - it would fit with your personality, I'd imagine. Don't get me wrong, I am super impressed with your current rig. I too share your concerns with MB service costs (and availability), but I still love my Sprinter. I am especially annoyed though, if I take it into to a (new) shop and automatically, they see that 3 pointed star and jump to the conclusion that I've got 'deep pockets' to spend on their inflated prices. Those are the few times that I miss my old '96 E250 ! 😏 Thanks Bob and TR for sharing. Great inspiration! 😃👍

Moved into a pickup truck. Ambulances are great in the back, but difficult at the pump. Bought an electric pickup because the polluting eats me up. I LOVE driving but lost a lot of joy thinking about how my pleasure creates problems for everybody else. Sure there are up front costs all around, but each time I sit in the driver seat I feel free to just cruise around. Our house is fully solar so there is not cost. Thank you for your kind words. 🤓

Forget what mercedes says. Change the oil atleast every 10,000 miles. Their job is to sell you another sprinter in a few years and barely squeak past the warranty.

A 4x4 shop on wheels - what's not to like about that? Sprinter maintenance costs, I guess. 😕 But if you can afford it. 👍 Also, there's that pro builder image that's quantifiable. I imagine it full of Fe$tool tools. 😊

Lol sounds like my son, he went and bought a brand new 2023 Chevy Silverado and took all the insignia logos off. I ask him why he did that ? He said mom i love the engine, the comfort but I'm not trying too be Chevy billboard. He said I wish I would have kept my 99 Chevy with 200,000 miles.

I am wondering about how servicing works for Sprinters after it sounded like you have to take it to a dealer for service? What about DIY for things like fluid and filter changes to save a bit of money? Is it possible to do some servicing and repairs yourself on these vans ir they’re out of warranty or service packages?

@GroomLake-Gremlin
@GroomLake-Gremlin Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do a great deal of the basic service tasks yourself and yes, at a great savings too. Lot's of KZbin videos showing you how to. The problem comes though when the warranty has finally expired, just like a majority of manufactured items, that's when some bigger, more specialized repairs are needed, and M.Benz has some ridiculously high charges for their mechanics, their genuine MB parts, and their shameless ability to justify all the reasons they are charging you such insane amounts. Don't get me wrong. I love my Sprinter. But yeah ... hate the dealerships. TBH - if I actually was more financially able to do so, I would purchase a Sprinter new, use and enjoy it while the warranty is in full effect, and then sell it/trade it in towards a new one - repeat the process until I decide on something different. -sorry, probably more (rant) info than you were asking for! ✌😏

Simple design with a lot of tool storage but not much in terms of creature comforts because so much space is set aside for tools. I prefer the elevated bed with rear door garage under the bed. A lot of space in this design is open floor space. Seems to fit his unique situation, but why not tow a small but very sturdy trailer that could be stored at the job site and have access to tools without climbing into the van ? Nothing wrong with his design b/c he likes it, just seems like it’s a bare minimum of any luxurious touches that add convenience..... and a person has to be able to embrace the limited comforts. I would prefer to build out the van for living or tow a camper so I could separate the tool storage from my living space.
@curious1366
@curious1366 Жыл бұрын
It seems that his priority is the work part. Remember that he still has a house, so he made it so he can "sleep over" in the van while he's on a job. It seems that your priority is the living part! And... maybe that "open space" is needed for some of his work tasks. Or to avoid visual clutter -- which some people find to be relaxing.

A big Mercedes van does impress, but you are putting it to use, so don't feel it's too flashy. And, nobody needs to know this is your housing. Let them think it's your mobile office and coffee station. Why encourage judgment from others I say. I live in a small townhouse but from its appearance most people imagine from the outside it's twice the size it really is. I think: keep them guessing, I don't judge them. Everyone is on their own journey, and I believe those who find peace in their life are blessed.
