I went to a lube place, they put my car on a lift, raised it up, the young man walked around the shop, stopped to talk to someone, came back to my car, lowered it and drove it out, supposedly all done. He never changed the oil. After giving the manager a piece of my mind I went back to changing my own oil again. It never hurts to know how to do something yourself. Thanks Dave.

Dave, one tip I always do and recommend is to add some oil to the filter before install so you don't run it dry
@Farm_fab3 жыл бұрын
This isn't always practical as the filter gets installed on its side in many, if not most vehicles. You would lose too much oil before it got tightened up.

Dave, there was a college in Minnesota that had a non credit course for their girls called powder puff mechanics that helped them understand the basics of their vehicles, such as tire pressure, vital fluids and understanding the gauges and or lights on their dashes. It seems that in this day and age, dads forget to do this with their daughter, or maybe those growing up without a dad in a single parent home are finding this an obstacle hard to traverse. It would be nice if more schools did this.

Thanks. Good solid information. Magnetic oil drain plugs draw ferrous metal shavings out of the oil. This is more prevalent in trucks these days with the older iron blocks. Not so much with smaller aluminum block engines but there are parts in there that can produce metal shavings. They can gum up the works so to speak. For a cheap version especially if you have a number of vehicles. Buy a stack of Rare Earth magnets. Home Depot Fastener aisle. About 3.50 for 6. Put one on each drain plug. If you are not as fast as Dave at grabbing the drain plug put one on the wrench or socket. Plug will stay stuck to it and you wont need to go hot oil plug fishing. The only good thing about the oil service companies is that they grease all the lube points and check the other fluids and filters at the same time. Stand outside the garage area and watch them like a Hawk.

Dave, another great video. We’ve (our family) used the Mobil 1 synthetic for a good 30 years. Nobody has ever had any internal engine problems. Walmart has the best prices, so everyone knows. It’s also important to make sure the rubber gasket comes off on the old filter. My dad taught me that. Told me a story about a friend changing his oil and that old gasket separating from the filter and stuck on the housing. He put the new filter on and well, 2 gaskets don’t form a seal. He fired the car up and it was spraying oil everywhere in the engine bay. I was amazed and horrified when my dad told me about it. Can you imagine cleaning up that mess!! That’s something I always check for now. In almost 20 years of oil changes, I have only had 1 gasket separate and stick. Thanks to my dad’s lessons, I caught it and it was all good. Dave, you’re an inspiration and I truly enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing your life and wisdom. My friend, God bless!!

I have been doing the DIY oil change for over 35 years. Here is some advice for those new to the oil change. You will never go wrong following the manufactures recomendations. For example, my Ford pickup uses 5 quarts of MitirCraft 5w-30 oil and a MitorCraft FL820s oil filter. It is changed using the Ford servere service schedule of 5000 miles getween changes. Stick with the OEM suggested oil. For example, if it says 5w-30....do not use 20w-50. It matters far more that you change you oil and filter....and far less which brands you use. There is no such thing as the BEST oil. Pick your oil brand and filter brand and just change your oil. I am a big fan of the 4.9L 300 Ford inline six. MotorCraft oil filter part number FL1A....things you remember. LOL Nice video and thank you for sharing. Oh, before all the Fram orange can of death commandos show up.....Fram is just fine and the issues from the 1970s have long since been solved.

I need to do front breaks on a tocoma 4 wheel drive with no one to help bled the lines can it be done ?
@edwardhowell32383 жыл бұрын
Yes. You just need something heavy, like a toolbox or a brick, to press the the brake pedal down. The basic process is use your heavy object to press the brake pedal down, go to the brake you want to bleed, put or already have a clear plastic hose on the drain nut, I recommend you use a also use a hand squeezed vacuum pump to speed things along, loosen the drain nut some, drain brake fluid until no bubbles, tighten drain plug, take heavy object off brake pedal, check brake fluid level at the master cylinder, put heavy object back on brake pedal. Repeat until no bubbles appear in the brake fluid. Remember to start with the brake furthest away from the master cylinder and work your way in.
@cheapwheels98283 жыл бұрын
You can gravity bleed them by putting a piece of tubing over the bleeder....the air bubbles should slowly work there way down the line as the fluid drains. Ive done it before on other vehicles.....Ive also done my own pumping then braced the pedal with a chunk of 2x4..

take a clear hose put it over the bleeder then take a jar fill it with brake fluid stick the hose in the jar ,open the bleeder and then go inside the vehicle and pump the brakes with long pumps to maximize the effect for about 5 times as fluid is drawn in the air bubbles will be forced out and you wont have any air trapped in the lines, I usually would use a long piece of hose so I could see the jar and watch the air escape.

In general, I would not use a synthetic oil on an older vehicle and expect to drive it for 6,000 to 15,000 miles. It is common for older vehicles to burn or drip small amounts of oil. After 3,000 miles, you might be a half a quart or so low. If you drove that same vehicle 6,000-15,000 miles, you could be two or more quarts low. That is a problem for your engine, and you could easily blow or wear down your motor. That's why I just stick to the cheaper high mileage oil every 3,000 miles on an older vehicle. Also, check to make sure to pair the correct 6,000-15,000 mile oil filter if using a special synthetic motor oil.

Not only that, but you know brand/weight/quantity that actually went in. And you know that the plug was reinstalled without cross threading and to a reasonable hand torque. Word of advice: if you rent a car, check the oil before ever starting the engine or moving the car. I have rented several cars from big name agencies where there was little oil on the stick. I rented a Volvo where the oil light came on at midnight on a back highway in Spain. Only a drop on the stick. I could drive 20MPH to keep the light off, and make it to an all night gas station to add oil, luckily. I rented another car in the US, drove it 100 miles, parked it, and found oil dripping. The agency yo-yo that had changed the oil put the plug in finger tight, and it was a couple of threads from falling out. Imagine that happening on the highway at 60 MPH. I never start up a rental car at the agency without checking the oil FIRST. People drive rentals like government mules. Think twice about buying a used one from a rental company.

Why do you run the vehicle ahead of time? The oil is hot and some of it is up in the block instead of the pan. My dad taught me to do it when vehicle is cold.
@cheapwheels98283 жыл бұрын
you want it to flow and to have the particulates suspended in the oil not settled at the bottom

The time saving aspect is particularly key I think. The Valvoline shop in town has some good folks, but the last time I went for a change they took almost more than an hour with a handful of vehicles and one truck that just didn't fricken move. I may be patient, but I do have my limits. Half an hour of your own time, on a day you got nothing else to do, no where else to be, and the components to do it yourself and can save a few bucks? Well why the hell not?

The most basic and cheapest thing you can do to protect your engine, and nobody does it. Oh, btw Dave, for the people trying to learn, you should have said the old gasket should come off with the old filter. If you double gasket you will have a leak. .......................... 👍👍

Dave - only “add” I would make is to tighten the oil filter 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn from when the seal initially contacts the face. Your explanation of “a bit” is nebulous and you may find rotating the filter of NEXT time to be a true hassle. Ask me how I know!!
@martinblouin36393 жыл бұрын
not only the few bucks saved, a lot of places scam people and they dont take the oil filter out or put cheap oil and charge like it was synthetic

I had a friend in high school who said her Dad made her learn to change her own oil since she was learning to drive. Everything was done except adding the oil. Her Dad went outside about an hour later to see what was taking so long. He discovered his daughter was adding the new oil through the dip stick hole....😳🤣🤪.

I wouldn't use fram on a lawnmower, they're the cheapest for a reason.

They are also Orange and make for a better thumbnail. Seriously though, Ive used them all and prefer a wix but the fram will do fine

@@cheapwheels9828 Some filter is better than none. Still funny to think the SBC was originally sold with one optional.

Why do you need to run the engine for a bit before you start turning screws and removing filters? Really I just don't know.
@reecenewton30973 жыл бұрын
You want to heat up the oil. Makes it flow out faster and more completely.
@cheapwheels98283 жыл бұрын
you want the oil warm and all the particulates "up" in the oil not settled in the bottom of the engine
