@momsterzz5 ай бұрын

@John-bu2xt5 ай бұрын
Facts.
@Yosetime5 ай бұрын
Was that Twain though? Maybe. I think traditional marriage vows are no longer relevant in today's society, and set us up for failure almost from the start. Cheating is nothing new. It has been well studied and is most often a symptom of something wrong within the marriage that was either purposefully or inadvertently, left unresolved and allowed to become unstable enough that one or both partners are likely to seek comfort in some other way. Sometimes that's cheating. Sometimes it gambling or working long hours to avoid the home. We all know what that looks like. But it's not a crime. It's the breaking point of a relationship. The time of reckoning. It's up to both to decide to end the relationship or not, to participate in the repairing of whatever caused the betrayal in the first place or not (knowing both of them hold some responsibility), to understand that it still might not work out, to not hold the cheating partner hostage under some 'trust earning' rule. That approach has never worked. You either fully forgive, fully move forward, or not. Holding a grudge won't fix anything, even if you do break up. You have to let it go. Because, cheater or not, you don't own that person and you cannot stop that person from whatever they want to do. People need to understand that a partners vows to you are just hopeful promises made under the most perfect conditions. You still don't own each other. You are still two people, both with free will, who know that life does change. Circumstances change, people change, stuff happens, and nobody is perfect. I think it would be useful that at the same time two people decide to be life partners, they also have to be able to say, out loud to each other, that they are both willing and capable of leaving that relationship if certain conditions arise. Like abuse, like those unexpected life changes that might involve a career move that won't work for the other, like children and parenting, like falling out of love with each other or falling in love with someone else, or a myriad of other possibilities. That is love and respect for the individuality of another and oneself, and the understanding that we cannot predict the future nor rely on some unrealistic promise that a couple will stay together forever no matter what, or even love each other forever. Clearly, that idea has rarely proven to be true in reality. And it shouldn't be. We could avoid a whole lot of conflict, and all this DV going on, if we just decided that each and every one of us, whether in a committed relationship or not, has the right to make changes in our own lives, independent of any influence from anyone else, including ending a relationship, and that right has to be acknowledged and respected from day one of any relationship. There are responsibilities to children, shared finances, etc. that need to be settled maturely and legally. But if we truly respect each other, love each other, we MUST, from day one, accept the other person's future decisions, even if they are hurtful (as in cheating), and plan ahead for how that will be handled as much as is possible. We own nobody. Even our partners. And if you truly love and respect yourself and your partner, then be willing to walk away from them, be willing to let them walk away from you. So much pain and destruction could be avoided if we just lived by this rule.
