10 months ago, I almost bought a 556A RS after watching your video. However, the golden rotor that I really loved was replaced for a silver one. Great video as always. Love the 556 and little known fact is that the Sinn’s cases are manufactured by its subsidiary SUG, and it doesn’t take a whole lot of research to discover who else SUG manufacture exceptional cases of high quality for, meaning the humble 556 has some very fancy cousins!

I fully agree with your assessment. My 556 A has by far the best legibility of all my watches. I visited the Sinn factory in Frankfurt shortly after I bought the watch in 2018 (so it still came with the ETA 2824-2 movement). Bang-for-buck wise, I think Sinn makes the best tool watches. My 556A RS is about three years old, and has run consistently at +1.5 to +3.5 spd -- well within both COSC and Metas standards. Plus, it's supposed to be easy and relatively inexpensive to service, though that hasn't come up yet. To me, it doesn't make sense to pay extra for an in-house movement unless/until you get into high horology. Correspondingly, I don't think that dinging a watch because it has an "off-the-shelf" movement makes sense at this price point. I'd also recommend the fine link bracelet, which is quite comfortable. As for straps, anything you put on this watch will look fantastic.

I have the 556 mother of pearl and love it. It has extra subtle flair the others dont. The dial is much better in person than pictures, and is different from every angle. Surprisingly the halfway point of rugged and dressy works well for it. It also runs +1s/day or less to boot. Oddly mine came with a silver rotor, only thing i can complain about

I think you went a little low on the movement. Yes, a normal Sellita isn’t anything special, but the Sellita used in the Sinn is a “top grade” movement just one step away from being COSC certified. And it’s decorated a bit nicer than an average Sellita. On top of all of that, Sinn manually regulates each one. It’s a solid 8/10 movement for me.

@7:23 "Tegiment" is a Sinn marketing word (latin for shell/armour). The actual technology is from Bodycote, a UK company, and known as S3P (Specialty Stainless Steel Processes) which itself is based on the kolsterising process invented by Dutch professor Bel Kolster in the 1980s.

I love Sinn. They are just original, quality, and no nonsense. They make tool watches - not pretend tool watches that are actually really just luxury trinkets (looking at you Omega / Rolex / Tudor etc). Rewind 40-50-60 years to the hayday of tool watches and those Swiss brands where killing it and the price was more akin to what Sinn go for in todays market (inflation adjusted). If you are after a proper tool watch to use as an actual tool you don’t buy an explorer, black bay, seamaster, super ocean, SEAQ etc (you buy those to have a luxury expensive timepiece with tool capabilities - there is a major difference). Instead you buy a Sinn - a Damasko - a citizen even. Great video

Have the 556i RS. Got it, because the one with the white seconds hand was sold out. I was not sure if i liked it at the beginning, because I found that stark minimalistic monochrome look very cool. However, now I agree with you on the red pop of colour - it really adds some interest. It is now, I think, my favourite everyday watch. The bracelet feels very substantial, and with it the watch feels very solid and pleasantly heavy, and sits perfect on my wrist. I don't know, somehow this weight in a pretty small watch feels like it has more value. Also, about the satin case and bracelet - it is very well done and fits the style and purpose of the watch. I feel like some polishing would an an unnecessary bling, and it would be less impactful design. So, I feel like Sinn did everything right with this one (and the dat window on the i model is at 3 o'clock, btw, so no issues there as well). Thanks for the great review!

I like this watch a lot, superb legibility at a glance. Without trying to offend any person by name, I am not a fan of the person who decided to have the date complication but I am a fan of the person(s) who implemented it very small with white on black as does 'hide' well enough not to be too distracting and certainly it would not put me off. I have to agree that the red on the seconds hand really does make the dial pop more. If I were considering this watch I think I'd prefer it on a decent leather strap that I think would possibly add to the great tool like design.

One issue I have with the RS from day one is with the 3rd hand, I wished it was thinner and longer, the tip ending closer to the inner case. All in all, the 556 would deserve more attention, Sinn is truly a great brand and, since I'm going regularly to their factory showroom in Frankfurt, they are truly nice people as well.

Very cool watch without a doubt. But for an alternative pilot watch, I'd advise folks to take a look at the Damasko DK-30 which is also German but contains a genuine in-house movement, and is made of ice-hardened steel (unlike the 556; Sinn doesn't offer regimented steel on this model). Oh, and it's also slimmer and less expensive. Not sure why we're talking about $1000-ish since the Sinn on a bracelet goes for at least $1,500.
@markclose5001 Жыл бұрын
The DK-30 is ~$1342 at the two US sellers. To my knowledge, and after looking at their offerings, neither sell it with the bracelet. You can buy the bracelet directly from Damasko, who charges €770.00, which works out to $833.00 before shipping and duties. The Sinn 556 with an H-Link bracelet is $1530 with the comparable Damasko bracelet is at least 42% more expensive. Personally, if I was buying the Damasko, I'd go with the DS30 and save ~$350 as I'd rather have the ETA movement rather than an in-house clone of the 2824 from a relatively new movement manufacturer. "In-house" doesn't mean better. "Submarine Steel" maybe good marketing, but not sure if it's a true benefit in normal real world use.

I had the 556A and it’s a hard watch to beat, I currently have an Explorer 1 36mm but it’s disappointing, the Sinn wears better, has crown guards, all brushed finish & is a sixth of the cost. I like the date display, you don’t really notice it till you need it. The clasp could be better as could the lume & Id happily pay more for these 2 things to be improved. There’s a gap that needs filling between a Sinn and a Rolex, Tudor nearly do that but at 3 times the price.

Great review of a watch that’s one of my all time favorites! I have to disagree though with the date window feeling like an afterthought. I think this is purposely the most unobtrusive date window of any watch. It can’t be accused of throwing off the balance of the design like many other watches do. (Date windows will always be a debate for enthusiasts) Also note that Sinn has modified the date wheel so that the numbers display “straight” instead of at an angle like many 4:30 date windows do.

I actually dig a lot of details for this watch. But I just don’t like those hands. Which is ironic as I love the aesthetic of it being inspired by instrument cluster dials. But, I’m failing to see the price point value on this. Aside from the name and the movement, it feels very much like an $800 watch. Entry level. If anything it really feels like a brand that designed an entry level watch, had it blow up in sales and then kept raising the prices to a point where it fails to meet value anymore. And while your version is nice, at the used price point you paid, it’s also super scuffed at that clasp. But it’s a tool watch and maybe that gives it some charm (I actually kind of dig a little “wear” and patina on my watches when it comes along naturally).
