Could you maybe give some examples of common check hook mistakes, situations where I wouldn't want to go for them? I'm boxing at home rn and my sparmate seems to always counter my check hook leading me to believe I'm doing it wrong

From my experience (very short so take it with a grain of salt) check hook is more a reactive thing, you don't just throw it out of thin air, hooks are slower than good head movement and jab so if you just want to throw a hook, someone with good reflexes can easily counter it. I think you should pair it up with a sudden position change or a feint at least.

. Eventually people will counter counters if given enough time to learn your patterns. What you could do is use the check hook as a set up shot since your friend knows you want and throw something else off it (double the hook, throw a jab after, throw the lead hand, etc. do that often until your opponent forgets that the check hook is real, then you can start throwing it as not a set up shot

Nice, although i prefer the check hook with the pivot of the lead foot, allowing for weight transfer to set up next punch and better defense.

Essentially yes. Think of it as “checking out” which can include a pivot in a few different fashions; can be lead leg dominate step pivot or can be a rear leg 90° style pivot for more of a positional change 🙌🏻
