At 11:15, you say having small stones/rocks in your pan helps make agitation more effective. Would carrying some of that size that you purposely add into your pan be a helpful procedure to adopt (especially here where you are prospecting a site - sizing up its characteristics/potential - rather than producing for quantity of gold particles)?
@ericjensen17404 жыл бұрын
A rock you can pick up and throw with one hand. A BFR takes two hands and ranges from being able to pick it up to just rolling it out of your way. A BAMFR stays right where it’s at and is always made from Leavherright. This river has lots of BAMFR’s!!

It's porphyry. Google "porphyritic basalt" and compare.
@philliphutcheson42194 жыл бұрын
maxibazze the crystals are elongated and six sided in the rock Dan picks up if you look closely. Porphyritic basalt tends to have shapeless clumps of matter in them and tends to be more black. Beryl producing rock tends to be more bluish to grayish in color as this rock is here.
@philliphutcheson42194 жыл бұрын
maxibazze I did. I also looked at the areas around this particular river and found that British Columbia has a ‘Beryl Belt’ running right through the middle and eastern part of the country.

Hey Dan, here is an IT dude tired of sitting in front of my computer (and working from home - Burnaby)... 😀😀😀 Started watching you and few other KZbin famous prospectors from our area, and of course I want to get out from my house at least a day per week and have fun... Not looking for "becoming rich professional" prospector, just a pan, small shovel and the crevice hook, the point is just to get out of my house... Being new to this, I have ONE question: When you talk about your "new claim", does it mean you have to register somewhere a spot where you are working or get some kind of "license" for recreational prospecting, or you can just drive your car by the river (possibly quieter place than by the Hwy) and just have fun half a day or so? I would really appreciate Dan if you , or anyone else can drop me an answer here... Happy prospecting all !!! Stay safe, keep the distance, but have some fun with your life... Thank you. Gosh, had to edit my comment as I forgot to say I LOVE your positivity, enthusiasm and videos. It must be that inner teacher of you... Think your pupils are really lucky... Keep it up...

For places like this with loads of black sand, would using a magnet to help separate out some of it help at all?
@HallwaysHits4 жыл бұрын
I'm not an active panner/prospector, but from the videos that I've watched (particularly from the Klesh Guitars GPAH videos) magnets seem to only be helpful when the sands are totally dry. If it's even a little damp, the gold can get stuck to the black sands.

small rocks are a great trick when panning the last of your material , cant wait to try it
@davidcaldwell89774 жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion...I’ve noticed that you don’t rotate your pan once you’ve worked it down, and keep working the sand over those huge riffles. I think you’ll find that once you’ve worked your pans down, if you rotate the pan so you aren’t working those huge riffles anymore, the last half of the pan will go faster and you’ll lose less gold. I know that sounds backwards, but it’s true. It’s a lot easier to separate the smalls, sand and gold on the flat side of the pan, where you don’t have to work it so hard to get material out of those big riffles. I was taught to rotate my pan once I’ve gotten to material that is smaller than the riffles. Spent my childhood summers panning the Truckee River, CA, with my best friend and his dad in the 80’s, before we had riffled pans like that. My favorite pan today, has big riffles in 1/4 of the circumference, then little 1/4” riffles another 1/4 way around then smooth the last half. We have mostly flour gold in Utah, but I have got to come up to BC and pan that river!!! Looks sweet!
@Danhurd4 жыл бұрын
I do that if I am cleaning gold, but for recovery I use the rifles and they work very well for me.

Now that you mention the wind, I once saw a guy in Sonora Mexico, not sure about the exact location, blowing at sand from the middle of the desert, picking it up from the surface first and he had this middle ages machine that blowed on the sand, the video is like 25 mins long and he ends up with something like a gram of gold at the end. No water involved at any moment, and all the sand was from the surface, but they did use around 1 ton of it.

I'm glad you did this one! The bar I work has small cobble and loaded with visual black sand. I believe the concentrated heavies accumulate from wave action washing as the flood recedes.....the deposits are not on the downstream side of the rocks parallel to the river.... they're traveling toward the river perpendicular to the flow. I wish I could vacuum up the top inch instead of shoveling unwanted underburden (that's a new one!) and rocks.
