For many, many years Boral (the concreting company) had (or still has) a sand and gravel quarry near Ballarat that has gold in it. Millions of tonnes of concrete was poured using sand that has gold in it. Ive seen buckets of the same sand panned off via the geologist that worked on the site....it was eye-opening!

There was a company on the American gold hunters that did this. They were on a massive gold deposit but the business was for concrete and sand etc.

Interesting video Chris. I think that many of us have seen those bags of sands and gravels in Bunnings (or local equivalent) and wondered if they might contain any gold? One thing that both of those bags of sand could be used for, is to practice sluicing, panning and clean up skills at home when we have some spare time, but not enough time to get to the gold fields. Makes me wonder how much gold has passed through my hands over 30 years of pumping concrete
@1one3_Racing
@1one3_Racing Жыл бұрын
@@TheBlokeOutback it would probably add up. Depending where the sand is sourced from. There's 108 bags in a cubic metre, 2/7th sand in a typical 4:2:1 mix, so 31 bags per cubic metre of concrete. Out of one bag he got around 1/2 cubic mm of gold dust. (It wasn't, but for ease of calculation we'll use this as a metric) Gold dust is around $72/gram (working on 3000/oz) So .001 grams of gold per bag is around 7.2 cents per bag. So around $2.20 per cubic metre? Unless my math is wrong. If you pump on average 20 cube a day $44/day?

I'm impressed with his knowledge of geology, mineralogy, and history, and his explanations really help you understand where to look and what to look for. I honestly believe if I had the right area around me, I could be successful at panning for it with all I've learned from Chris. When I think of what I've learned from his channel, it really hurts when I think of all the times in my past I'd hiked and camped in the Colorado mountains outside Golden south of the Central City area. Now I realize I probably had been camped out right next to streams, creeks, and rivers that must have had ounces of gold just sitting there. Oh wasted youth!

@@Jimmycleans Wish you all the luck in the world, and I hope you have a great time whether you find gold or not. I do not deny the reasons, just the abilities and resources to do so. To be sadly honest, if I was to squat down to pan a gold pan, I'm afraid that's where they'd find me come spring thaw! Still in that squat. Not to mention I'm about 1,000 miles from any good areas. I hear there IS some gold in the northern section of the main river coming through my state, but it's sparse and extremely fine, and still farther than I could arrange to travel. Like I said - a wasted youth. I lived in the Colorado Rockies, hiked for days and miles into them, camped near streams, creeks, and rivers that HAD to have gold in them. And I never thought about it. Damn! Good luck to you.

Jandakot WA, a bit south of Perth, several miles west of the Darling fault line. It's just north of serpentine valley where there's a big mining application underway. The fault line hosts the old Boddington gold mines further south. I've been trying up in those Hills for blinking ages without any real results.... Jandakot, though, has shops. And a climbing gym, where we're headed later. I'm taking my shovel where I know there's a lot of soft, black sand. Nice tip-off Chris!

I think that this river sand was "washed" to get the gold out first. That would make sense in an area that's know for gold bearing sands. I used to have a claim that was just downstream from a dam on a river in southern Oregon. When they built the dam, they used the gravels from the stream bed and you bet they sluiced the gravels before incorporating them into the dam. From what I understand, they had a lock on the box and did a clean out once a week and all the concentrates were loaded into an armored vehicles and taken to a bank vault. My father was a police officer in the area and he's also a geologist. Just shows that being a geologist don't pay when you got a family. We still have claims in the area and in Nevada. Though the Nevada ones are to sell to mining companies except for two that i mine myself for fun. Its work, but I get to hang out with wild horses and coyotes.

"KZbinr causes a rush on sand at Bunnings - details at 6!" Apparently Melbourne sits on a gold patch and considering the Dandenongs to the East and the last bit of the Great Dividing Range to the north I am not surprised. The whole area had a bunch of volcanoes way back which have eroded down. There were a couple of gold mines in the Ringwood area in the early days, not to mention more north of the city. Back in the 70s, they used to line the streets in Perth with crushed quartz and used it to make roads. I remember picking up and keeping the rocks in our street and I am sure I saw bits of yellow in them (God only knows what happened to them!) and a few years ago someone actually tested the quartz and found it had a heap of gold in it. The road works had been sold the quartz from around some gold mining areas or from the discard piles of such because I suppose someone thought there wasn't any gold in it or maybe it just wasn't worth crushing etc since the mines produce it so easily! So YES! the streets are paved with gold!
