Moonring is ridiculously good. The way you need to put together notes and clues to slowly get familiar with the hostile world really feels like an adventure.

One of my first RPGs outside Bards Tale was Ultima 3. When this dropped last yr, players were overwhellmingly wanting to know how to contribute $$ becasue it felt like stealing. It is such a breath of fresh air and cannot recommend it enough.

Thanks for the video. Titles like these are usually a bit too rough for me to get into, so it's nice to have others lower that barrier of entry. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.

This art style looks like it'd take a lot of effort to do while also making it look and feel contemporary. Good stuff.

there's a lot of charm to this. The RPG elements are seemingly very well done. I'm probably going to pick it up but, but, even just 90's retro style of RPG graphics on this i feel would have really put it on many radars.
@odstbane3 ай бұрын
Just put 20 hours into this one a couple weeks ago. Didn't feel like there was as much content as I was hoping and the boss dungeons ended up too repetitive so I only did 2. It was still pretty enjoyable and worth the time spent though

Absolutely agree - I had a great time with Moonring. I highly recommend anyone who likes retro RPGs to give it ago, even if you haven't tried something this retro before.

I added this game to my library when it released, now it is in the waiting line along with a bunch of games in my backlog. Good to know it is in fact a good game, the retro style interested me, it reminds me of Castle of the Winds, but with more colors.

Hard to complain about the princely sum of free. It’s on my list to play, but damn, I wish he’d done a Mac release as well. I have a gaming laptop, but it’s a 17in beast, so it’s not suited to being on an actual lap. And this is the kind of game I’d like to play sitting in bed with an actual lappable laptop on my lap. And I have a Mac laptop as well; it weighs nothing, throws off no heat, and lasts forever on a single charge. I’ll definitely get around to this game though. I’ve seen too many good things about it, and the art style looks interesting.

I enjoyed the first couple hours I had with Moonring! Unfortunately I got hard stuck after finding the first few towns, as the quest instructions were so brutally vague (I'm not great at old school games) I got completely lost, and there was no guide online to help me break through.

Remember shareware? Is there a mechanism on Steam that would support that? D/L software, send money if use it, honor system. Seems like it open up another model found on other sites: pay what you think is fair and such. Anyway, thanks for the vids. Seems like lots of check-outs lately. Not a complaint, but unsubstantiated informal pattern recog by alt nevous system.

Pretty fun game(for the few hrs i played) and it's free to boot. A lil similar to Wayward and of course Ultima with the typing simulator which I always found neat. Think even the Wizardy 1 had the same mechanic I think??? (which I used to mispronounce it a Wizardyl.. thinking it was an 'L'.. Hehe..) Might be wrong though.
@HomemdaFaina2 күн бұрын
And you still mispronounce it, it's Wizardry, not wizardy. By the way, even Wizardry 8 has that the typing box.

This review brought back memories of one of my all time favorite games (Nethack) which leads to me asking you a question, I'm hoping you don't mind my inquiry. Are you familiar with Nethack (or other early rogues) and if so are there any newer games in this genre that you'd recommend? I know you've stated rogue-likes aren't your favorite genre but this isn't typical of Rogues these days and I can't if this reviewed game is turn based only but I figured what's the harm in asking. Thanks for your content. It's very entertaining and I feel I always learn what I need to from your content.
@bloyamind3 ай бұрын
Are you familiar with Ancient Domains of Mystery? (ADOM). I believe it's evolved from Nethack, but made into a large scale open world without any stuff that breaks the fantasy immersion. There's an option in that to go back to ASCII graphics, which I do, because the tiles (to me) totally don't match the actual vibe, it's a brutal game ghehe. It's also available for free, but that only has the ASCII graphics. I actually ended up discovering old-school roguelikes and ADOM because the exploration and combat in Moonring clicked with me so well. There are plenty of other (free) games in the nethack vein around. Two I know of are Sil-q and Brogue.

I tried this a few weeks ago and, while the idea of the game sounds great, I bounced off of it after the small tutorial. I could tell that it was one of those "you get what you put into it"-type games, and I wasn't in the right headspace to really sink my teeth into it.
