Congrats, beautiful boat, background landscape is incredible, you might not want to go back to a mono hull after sailing a Cat for two weeks, I really miss our Cat, it was a Privilege 615, but it was time to down size, we now own a Dana 24, which is a very capable blue water boat, for us its perfect for sailing the Florida coastlines and occasional trip to the Bahamas....

Great video. What is your opinion on the build quality of the catamaran? Thank you
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 5 жыл бұрын
It seemed well built... maybe over built? The decks and hull felt very solid with no deflection or the "eggshell" feel you get in a lot of cats trying to stay light. It may make it a bit heavy, but for the charter trade, you don't have to worry about it getting dinged up or holed. We were also on a well, well used one (not the one in this video) and it's held up with no spider cracking or visable construction issues. Plumbing was done well. Electrical was simple (not a big panel), but neat. The deck hardware was all name brand and appropriate size. There are a few things I'd change on the deck layout, but it all functioned fine. Every system looked like it was accessible and easy to maintain. Things I would have like: A bit better ventilation in the cabins and salon. The hulls have forward hatches, but the cabins themselves still get a bit stuffy. The issue is where to install a hatch? It would be right on the side deck and make passage forward difficult... so I'm not sure the answer there. They could also use a forward opening hatch in the salon (not overhead, but in the windshield). If I were redesigning the boat, I'd drop the side deck down (hull headroom is a massive seven feet), decrease windage and get better visibility from the galley and salon. Currently, if seated, you can only see out the open stern of the boat and not forward or either side. With a lowered side deck, they'd be able to fix that issue and I'd be about the perfect Caribbean cruiser cat. I'd love to own one :) Matt

We'll own a cat someday. For us, it's not the space, or sitting flat or any of the other reasons most people go cat... it's the view from inside and not living down in the hull that drives us that direction. We kind of duplicate that with our deck salon, but it's different when the galley and salon are on the same level with the cockpit. To find a monohull that can support a large pilothouse like that, we'd be looking over 50' and have windage issues. On a cat, we can do it under 40'. Elements was purchased for going North (and maybe South). Once we are done cruising those areas then we'll start looking for a cheap cat to refurbish. Matt

The biggest unknown for us with our travels was Georgie. If we could only have found a vet to watch her, and be left in a crate all day, we would have gone to MI or AZ so we could take her. But when we found a good temporary home for her in Terceria, Thailand was an easy choice. 😁

I was surprised that for a country so reasonably priced on everything that the cat rental is so high. Not that it's not gorgeous or wouldn't charter for that elsewhere. It just surprises me for Thailand. I think it would be an idea to split the charter with another couple or two with all the roominess.The area is certainly beautiful and I hope you get the most out of your trip. Fair winds and weather.
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's a case of amortizing the boat regardless of destination. The boat purchase, maintenance, insurance and profit for the charter company and boat owner should all be very similar in each area. But, you do save a lot on dinner out on shore :) Matt

What do you guys think of the open lay out? How about dealing with bugs?
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 5 жыл бұрын
We were concerned with the bugs too, but shockingly, we never had any bug issues at all in SE Asia. If using this boat in the Americas, you'd have to have some screens and a way to block off the stern of the boat at night, but that would be easy to do with a bit of canvas. I love the open layout... especially in a beautiful area like this! I'd feel a bit exposed if we were marina hopping, but for anchoring away from the crowds, it was perfect. This boat is designed for charter from the keel up, so there were more cabins and space dedicated to them than you'd have on an owners version. But the concept is awesome and I can see why it's a success. Matt

electronics have greatly improved navigation and weather prediction. i think traditional navigation skills could come in handy at some unforeseen time. you do attempt oceanic crossings. weather is predictable but not strictly dependable. and rogue waves are not fiction. you are blue water sailors and as such your bravery is unquestioned. you deserve the respect given any ships captain. both of you! the use of celestial navigation and a sextant could maybe be of use at some unforeseen time of difficulty. blow that off if you like but what is in your mind isn't gone until death. and could prevent death. i want to read of your adventures for years to come.

Comparing your B&G electronics to this boats Garmin, which do you like more?
@MJSailing
@MJSailing 5 жыл бұрын
We'll..... As I said before, I'm not too big of a fan of our B&G gear, so the Garmin gets the nod here without much effort. The UI of the Garmin is much easier to understand without needing a bunch of sub-menus, and the display was nice and crisp, but I'm not a big fan of how Garmin as a company makes their equipment obsolete so fast. Maybe I'm just romanticizing my experience with Raymarine, but it really was wonderful stuff on our last boat and I hope to move back to it someday. They are still doing firmware updates for the C95 chartplotter we installed in 2012... That's commitment to helping people stay up to date! Matt

Matt & Jessica, I hope you're having a great time. I hope I'm not asking ffor too much personal info. But you have been so forthcoming with keeping us informed of your finances. I wanted to ask, (I undestand if you would rather remain quiet) how you negotiated the charter boat. I know you have agreed to provide promotion for them, but are these companies willing to do these deals 100% cash free? Just curious. Tell me to mind my own business, I understand.

Hi Stephen! No, we don't mind answering at all! This was actually the first time we ever reached out to a company, and we were beyond thrilled when they responded they wanted to work with us as well. In this case I think it was a win/win for both parties: they had a boat which would have otherwise been sitting at the dock, and we got the chance an entirely new area. The boat was rented based on a certain number of videos in return, but we're incredibly happy to promote Island Charters and the Koh Chang area. Nothing but positive experiences for us from Island Spirit and SE Thailand.

@@MJSailing Island Spirit has form with this. They certainly supported Bobby White and Laura from Sailing Doodles and now you. Its seems a really good win/win for everyone. They get their product directed right at their target audience for the cost of someone using their boats when they weren't chartered. As for Bobby, he got to sail across the Pacific on a big Bendy Toe, and Island Spirit essentially got a free yacht delivery and heaps of promotion. I much prefer to watch this type of advertising than those awful advertisements on TV.

It does have some freeboard. To give you an idea, I had a foot of headroom in the hulls and the floorboards were still a foot over the bilge. But, for a charter boat, the room was amazing. Matt

@@alohathaxted I love Chris White designs! We tried buying Skyhook, a 39' Chris White Trimaran in 2013, but the surveyor spent about 20 minutes aboard before he told me it was a dead boat. Water had gotten in the core and delaminated the glass in the beams and amas. Normally a little glass work doesn't bother me, but in the high stress locations that were damaged, I'd always be a little unsure of the boat. Another one of his awesome designs.... did over 20knts down Biscay bay. Matt

@@mattjohnson6716 I saw a 33 ft sloop for sale on Yachtworld that had all the essentials. Nice galley and spacious head with shower and teak interior. yet it had a dead hull. You could live on her well. So i came up with the idea, that really this would make a great cabin in the woods. Build post and beam structure over her with a nice roof and build a deck all around her deck. surround the stucture with Hesco Bastian and plant ivy at the top and let it grow down the walls. You get a nice Aeire in the woods especially on a hillside and with the added roof space for solar for power. No septic. Bring a water tank on weekends. Call for septic guys for pumpouts. Like a Bhutanese home with a big wood stoveout on its deck and you can enjoy it in all kinds of weather. Like a short fire watch tower. ward8online.com/wp-content/uploads/fire-lookout-homes-tiny-houses_157645.jpg just a cheap camp really. the sloop was going for 3K. Probably took 1K www.heavenlybhutan.com/farm-house/

Have ONE brief look from outside and You'll know .... Cats like that are for landlubbers, making a fancy holiday aboard less demanding for them by being floating condos with some kind of a sail somewhere, too. Sailboats, in the opposite, are aimed towards ocean sailing and have berths and a galley, too.
