Great video. What is your opinion on the build quality of the catamaran? Thank you
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
It seemed well built... maybe over built? The decks and hull felt very solid with no deflection or the "eggshell" feel you get in a lot of cats trying to stay light. It may make it a bit heavy, but for the charter trade, you don't have to worry about it getting dinged up or holed. We were also on a well, well used one (not the one in this video) and it's held up with no spider cracking or visable construction issues. Plumbing was done well. Electrical was simple (not a big panel), but neat. The deck hardware was all name brand and appropriate size. There are a few things I'd change on the deck layout, but it all functioned fine. Every system looked like it was accessible and easy to maintain. Things I would have like: A bit better ventilation in the cabins and salon. The hulls have forward hatches, but the cabins themselves still get a bit stuffy. The issue is where to install a hatch? It would be right on the side deck and make passage forward difficult... so I'm not sure the answer there. They could also use a forward opening hatch in the salon (not overhead, but in the windshield). If I were redesigning the boat, I'd drop the side deck down (hull headroom is a massive seven feet), decrease windage and get better visibility from the galley and salon. Currently, if seated, you can only see out the open stern of the boat and not forward or either side. With a lowered side deck, they'd be able to fix that issue and I'd be about the perfect Caribbean cruiser cat. I'd love to own one :) Matt

We'll own a cat someday. For us, it's not the space, or sitting flat or any of the other reasons most people go cat... it's the view from inside and not living down in the hull that drives us that direction. We kind of duplicate that with our deck salon, but it's different when the galley and salon are on the same level with the cockpit. To find a monohull that can support a large pilothouse like that, we'd be looking over 50' and have windage issues. On a cat, we can do it under 40'. Elements was purchased for going North (and maybe South). Once we are done cruising those areas then we'll start looking for a cheap cat to refurbish. Matt

I was surprised that for a country so reasonably priced on everything that the cat rental is so high. Not that it's not gorgeous or wouldn't charter for that elsewhere. It just surprises me for Thailand. Fair winds and weather.
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын

What do you guys think of the open lay out? How about dealing with bugs?
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
We were concerned with the bugs too, but shockingly, we never had any bug issues at all in SE Asia. If using this boat in the Americas, you'd have to have some screens and a way to block off the stern of the boat at night, but that would be easy to do with a bit of canvas. I love the open layout... especially in a beautiful area like this! I'd feel a bit exposed if we were marina hopping, but for anchoring away from the crowds, it was perfect. This boat is designed for charter from the keel up, so there were more cabins and space dedicated to them than you'd have on an owners version. But the concept is awesome and I can see why it's a success. Matt

The UI of the Garmin is much easier to understand without needing a bunch of sub-menus, and the display was nice and crisp, but I'm not a big fan of how Garmin as a company makes their equipment obsolete so fast. Maybe I'm just romanticizing my experience with Raymarine, but it really was wonderful stuff on our last boat and I hope to move back to it someday. @@mattjohnson6716 I saw a 33 ft sloop for sale on Yachtworld that had all the essentials. Nice galley and spacious head with shower and teak interior. yet it had a dead hull. You could live on her well. So i came up with the idea, that really this would make a great cabin in the woods. Build post and beam structure over her with a nice roof and build a deck all around her deck. surround the stucture with Hesco Bastian and plant ivy at the top and let it grow down the walls. You get a nice Aeire in the woods especially on a hillside and with the added roof space for solar for power. No septic. Bring a water tank on weekends. Call for septic guys for pumpouts. Like a Bhutanese home with a big wood stoveout on its deck and you can enjoy it in all kinds of weather. Like a short fire watch tower. ward8online.com/wp-content/uploads/fire-lookout-homes-tiny-houses_157645.jpg just a cheap camp really. the sloop was going for 3K. Probably took 1K www.heavenlybhutan.com/farm-house/

Ahhh... Bangkok, spent some R&R time there during the SE Asia War Games...but I'm sure your reasons for visiting are much different than our objectives were. 🤔😂😂

Oh, no! You've tasted the catamaran! How will you ever be comfortable on Elements again!? ;-)

Have ONE brief look from outside and You'll know .... Cats like that are for landlubbers, making a fancy holiday aboard less demanding for them by being floating condos with some kind of a sail somewhere, too. Sailboats, in the opposite, are aimed towards ocean sailing and have berths and a galley, too.

I thought for a moment that you’d sold your other boat! I was on the sister ship to your’s in January and really liked it. Hit me up if you ever plan to sell. AND WHERE’s GEORGIE??

It will be for sale in a year or two. We're going to finish the North and then buy a different boat for the mid lats if we can budget the change. Matt

In Thailand you eat with your spoon.......you fork never goes in your mouth it is for taking food from a common plate on the table......
@MJSailing5 жыл бұрын
It's funny we would have thought it would be opposite since spoons are better for scooping things from a common plate.

I never heard that. We did learn that you don't mix the food together before eating... just pushing the amount that's going into your mouth at one time. Matt

I would not go testing-out that "they don't check or care [about the drone]." BTW -- rarely if ever mentioned here, but thank you for all your posts on CF!
