Of coarse the power station you show is old school. You are using an old school AGM battery as the heart of it! A Lithium Phosphate battery is the only way to go!

I took your design and added a small inverter with a switch and wired it to a socket on the outside with a flip cover. I also added a sae connector on one side for a 50w solar panel with built in charge controller. Hard to replace that with what you showed... i love the design of your box though...

LiFPo4 has some advantages over Lithium Ion. Generally LiFepo4 batteries are sealed, so you don't have to worry as much about getting them wet(Don't leave your cordless drill out in the rain). LifePO4 batteries are safer in that they don't have the thermal runaway issues you can experience with L-ion, potential fire hazard. LifePO4 batteries also can be charged a few thousand times verses hundreds of times you can charge a Li-ion battery without losing capacity. LifePO4 batteries are not as energy dense as L-ion, so they add slightly more weight/size, but still much better than lead acid. Also, LiFePO4 cannot be charged at low temperature (Freezing) or damage may result. So, I think you battery box still has plenty of uses for LiFePO4 applications, it's just about choosing what is best in each case.

Nah, the 2 amp max draw on the 12v output severely limits these DC to DC converter's ability to power what a power box can.

BE careful about drawing down spend genuine and even knock off Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee cordless tool batteries with those adapters. A LOT of those on Amazon have no low voltage/undervolt protection -- even those which claim they do. Be they power wheel adapter, or small light with USB, or USB with a 12v etch, make 100% sure they cut off at 14-15 volts. And that each accessory turns off

Can't beat the compact size of the tool battery route for what a lot of people use them for. Of course there are scenarios when certain options and mounts are ideal to partner with a power box, so I think there is still a market for those, it's just much smaller than what it used to be like you say
@VE3AVA

100% agree with using one of these adapters. I also have a step down for 12v dc to powerpoles. lots of uses. But the larger battery box would be more ideal for different applications. I think both options should be utilized. Of course, if you need to start up quick and don't have the cash, get the adapter and start using it for your projects etc, right away. I do Ham radio and would need something larger with better discharge, My dewaLT can't keep up. Great video and good points. but depending on your needs, I would suggest both.

Be careful buying Chinese ones. If you leave it on your battery more than a couple days, it doesn't stop draining your battery until its at 0v. Thus ruining or drastically reducing battery life.

Though it seems like a good idea to use a powertool battery, you'll never get the power output from the tool battery that you would be able to get from a lead acid / Lithium iron phosphate drop in battery. That 12 vilt output barrel connection is go for what maybe 2-3 amps? I built a power box with 2 12 volt accessory ports, 2 usb ports, volt meter, 3 separate switches, 3 separate fuses along with an anderson 50 amp output to connect a 1,000 watt continuous power inverter. It also has a 1,280 lumen weatherproof light. The watt hour storage from the 3 Dakota lithium batteries exceeds a 35 amp lead acid.

I got same dewalt battery's. that great.that have a 15Ah 60V now, also try the DCB049K usb C 100watt PD charger. running my laptop now. HP 17 in with USB C to HP blue tip cord. run hours and hours on 10Ah 20V. with all that I still use a homemade battery box. reason is ham radio use. ICOM draws over 20 amps peak. that adapter can not give the amps and also is a switch mode converter witch makes hash noise in the HF bands. even CB . so I bult my own out of harbor freight 50 cal ammo box. using a LiFePO4 battery. built in MPPT solar charge controller . using a 100 watt x2 folding panels. great out in the field power box. my only problem is MPPT under the right sun and if on lower HF bands sometimes I get noise. ferrite was a great fix. and that make a small inverter that goes on DeWalt battery. not a sign wave type. also got the DeWalt power station 1800 watts takes 4 buttery's. runs a coffee pot in my tent just fine. mostly use it to charge 4 buttery's at once.

So what happens when your Dewalt battery and power box battery dies? I was looking at your design of the power box and there would be enough run to put a hand crank motor that you could put a handle on to manually charge the dead battery. Store the handle in the case and when needed, take it out, connect it to the crank and turn to generate charging for your battery. You can't do this with the Dewalt on it's own, but you could do it with the power box. :-)

All of my solar generator boxes have pure sine inverters, and of course, a solar charge controller. In a "grid-down" scenario (or camping in the middle of nowhere) you'll run out of power and have no way to recharge your battery pack. Then you'll probably wish you had a mini solar generator box instead. My latest version is only 6" x 3.5" x 6.5" with all of the bells & whistles and a 450Wh lithium battery inside.(40.5Ah). Power? What's the power? The DeWalt is a 20v 6AH battery, or, 120 WH. The upgraded 9AH battery is still only 180WH. With the "Flex", you might get 60v out of it, but the power would still be the same. The 180WH battery would give you 3AH equivalent, at best. So, in the big boy battery box, you may wind up with much greater power - that has to be taken into account.

They wound up getting a good deal on Ryobi packs, and put the building on hold. Twelve 4 AH packs, several 2 AH packs, and an assortment of 1.5 AH packs. Ryobi kits with both USB and power inverters. Jigs for cheap LED "fog lamps" from Amazon.
