As we get ready for our boat launch for the Crick Boat Show 2023 we drive over to Derbyshire and visit Oakums Narrowboats who are building our brand new boat. This boat will be an entry into the favourite boat in show category and everything has to look great. We have designed and worked closely with the team at Oakums over the past year to cone up with a beautiful boat that will make living aboard a real luxury. Solar Panels, Lithium Batteries, Electric Propulsion and gas free. See how the furniture is made and dropped in through the huge skylights.
Paul & Anthony together with Dexter live full time but manage to work part-time, on a 57' Narrowboat, cruising the UK Canals and finding out what it's really like to be Living on a boat exploring the Nature and scenery on some of the best canals and rivers in the UK onboard a Bickerstaffe Narrowboat called Morning Star. New for 2023 we are having a brand new narrowboat from Oakums Narrowboats and are taking advantage of lithium, solar, and electric propulsion, the boat will be coal and gas free.

Dean and I were discussing how much you guys must have put into all the decisions to get to this point. The Oakums team are just plan hard workers which was so evident. @@judithkitchingman4419we manufacture in bulk; to keep our costs reduced. It’s better to buy oak in volume than boat to boat. Typically we have 3 boats worth of joinery made and ready, with a further 3 in build or progression. We then store the joinery in containers off site, until the boats arrive; and then it all comes together as one. The site you see, operates more like an assembly line. It saves space, and prevents damage. 😊

Eeeeeeek!!! This is all very exciting for you both (and Dexter of course ❤). I have to admit that for me, making decisions about colours and fabrics based on tiny little samples and swatches is so incredibly difficult. I don’t envy you having to go through that process. Small pieces could look great together, but then they look completely different when seen in a larger format. Gahhh, I’m glad to see that you really spent the time deciding....and then deciding again 😳 I remember having to choose a new colour for a van that I had, and that was an experience. Yup, I don’t envy you having to look through those sample swatches. I’m sure you’ve been taking photographs of and searching for examples day and night for months and having dreams about different fabric patterns etc. Anyway, enough of that, I’m so excited for you and I can’t wait to see the results of everyone’s hard work. Hi Paul, Anthony and Dexter Dog. I'm loving this weeks Vlog. I had to smile when Anthony said why he would not let Paul drive the Van. Watching your Vlogs on the build of your new boat, you can see how amazing Oakums Customer Services are. That's a great wood shaving machine, we all should have one. I got very emotional with the time lapse of the furniture being loaded in thru the skylight, what a great idea to do it that way, and what amazing footage you have of it. Your couch, OK (we only saw the cushions) looked fantastic. a great Colour too. The cushions looked so comfy (Dexter will like that). During the furniture install, it was interesting that the initial plumbing and electrics were already in place. Everything is so well planned out. The house/boat plant in that frame, is nothing like I have seen before, I loved it. Thank you for another great Vlog, and thank you for shearing you amazing journey with Oakums. I feel your excitement. I know you say Dexter was only interested in food, but I'm sure he will love it. Aww thank you. He does scare me 😂. I loved this vlog too; particularly the time lapse. Great to see how Ingenious their build is. The sofa is really Comfortable and the fabric is really tactile. We have been researching living walls and how we could incorporate it onto the boat. What we went for means that the frame contains the water and slowly waters the plants. We searched for ages to find what we wanted. The frame is the watering system which feeds the plants for up to 2 weeks: those skylights should provide adequate lighting too. 😊

Thanks Stephen. It was a difficult decision as we love our current boat, however, Oakums are very innovative in their design and we are hoping it will be more suited to our lives off needs. That time has certainly gone quickly. Woodwork and floor is looking good. Personally I am not sure about the plants, but everyone has different tastes. Will certainly be interesting to see the next stages, with the rest of the furniture and eventually seeing the colour you have chosen for the outside.

Ahhhhmaaaazzzzing! It’s really moving along, looks lovely so far. Your flooring looks like the hardwood we laid in a house we had years ago, we laid it piece by piece through the whole main floor of the house, very sore knees but well worth it to get the look we wanted. The living wall looks great, I wonder how it will grow, it’s pretty full looking already, it’s a cool idea 👍🏼. You probably won’t be able to show us the finish until Crick though will you? Hey Dawn. It is very impressive how quick they can do the internal fitout. The floor, like you said, is solid oak. Laid piece by piece too. The living wall frame is full of water which slowly feeds the plants. I love the look of it and totally fits with our thought of bringing nature and natural tones into the boat. I am not sure what Paul plans to show prior to Crick but I am sure the colour will be a part of it. Hope you have a lovely weekend ❤

I forgot to mention the Solar Panels. They are just out of this world. They look great the way they have been installed on the boat, so neat, with no visible wiring to get snagged up etc. But the power you will have on the boat is unbelievable. I am so much into Solar power these days (I have a a couple of Jackery's) I'm very impressed. Take care.
