I planted one of the OM Orchids and two of the OM Inspirations in March and they are doing great. Orchid is covered in blooms and a ton more buds. The Inspirations haven't bloomed yet but are budded up and ready to pop. Great video.

Love your channel i have a question and hope you can answer it. Which camelia cultivar is the absolute most cold hardy. Ive tried the winters snowman and i was told it was the most cold hardy but it froze out. I live in zone 6A in far southwestern virginia at 2500 feet in elevation so is it even possible for me to grow camelias? Im somehow growing happy needle palms but have had no luck with camelias? Lol makes no sense

I'm in zone 7a and just planted three April Dawn camellias that are supposed to be hardy down to zone 6a. I hope they survive winters here. Our coldest winters are usually in the teens, sometimes single digits and occasionally just below zero at night. I kept going to my local nursery and they never carried camellias and every time I asked, they looked at me like I was crazy and would say "They don't grow in our zone, it's too cold!" Yet I kept finding cultivars online that were rated for a zone colder than mine.If they do well, I'll plant more. Now I'm looking for gardenias. Growing up we had a gardenia shrub by our porch and every time we sat outside or walked by, we could smell the fragrance. But again, my local nursery says it's too cold and they only sell them as indoor plants or annuals. There are new cultivars hardy to zone 6a, so I guess I'll just keep shopping for plants online and try my luck.

And if you absolutely want camellias, you can cover them with large clear trash bags that they sell at Home Depot whenever the temperature drops. (That's what the nursery I bought mine from recommended) Or plant them in containers and bring them inside in the fall.

@@ejohnson3131 thank you that was a slap in my face lol. Its basically doing what i was doing with my palms duh! Lol if youd never commented thatd probably never crossed my mind cuz i was so glad the palms were acclimated. What i will do is get one for one of my big pots on the back deck and wheel it in the garage when i need to. Winter is the only time i get to enjoy my personal plants nd garden cuz the rest of the year i tend to everyone elses. So my garden is a fall and winter themed one. ive tried a winter snowman camelia it bloomed for halloween then to slowly die completely by spring. Ill get a fall one so i wont miss the blooms while its hiding in the garage, hopefully a variegated one too. God bless and thank you for telling me what shoulda knew already. Why never crossed my mind idk thank once again

@@ejohnson3131 I've tried the frost proof gardenias in a clients yard in a sheltered spot all six were dead come spring tho they "supposedly" were hardy and had all season to establish before their winter of doom. What my palms taught me for anything your pushing zone wise try a south facing wall in between things if possible its not the cold its the duration and if theres wind. Wind will what i call freeze fry stuff much faster than plain old cold temps. Im so shocked im growing 2 types of palm but yet ill never have a crape myrtle be more than a perennial with out special care. My palms are one there own lol being outside in windy zero degree weather trying to delicately cover those palms was more than i really wanted when they out grew their winter huts. You being zone 7A and i assume flat land not on top a windy hill like me i think you'll do fine with camellias and gardenias. If you haven't tried the south facing wall trick try it and remember its wind more than cold that kills. Oh and Im growing palms in a winter wind downslope area they blow ALL winter if it worked for me it'd have to work for you...... just wish i could get a windmill palm going with out wrapping it every winter but thats a small price to have the mountain view. Thank you and let me know if your camelias made it

Matt Lloyd - Yeah I'll let you know. I just planted them like two weeks ago, so they're tiny things. They are protected by a south facing wall and a fence under the shade of some crabapple trees. Fingers crossed!

Do these grow fast ? I need a fast growing evergreen shrub as an hedge to block a neighbor

Most Camellias grow slowly. (They'd be a lovely, expensive hedge). Fast growing zone 7-9ish: ligustrum, eleagnus, wax myrtle, nandina, and some holly. For zones up to 4: many conifers will work. He has vids on screening shrubs.

I'd like to put camellias along the front foundation of my house. My house faces northeast though. Would these be good for that location?
