This video was super helpful. I have tried everything to prevent my hollies from having dead limbs with no luck. You answered more questions in this video than anyone I have talked to or paid to resolve this issue. Thanks!!

I have a 15 year old compacta holly that I am tempted to do a hard rejuvination prune because it has gotten too big for it's location. This video has given me the courage to go for it. I will probably do it in early May 2023. ( zone 7 Maryland...a week before our last frost date) Hopefully it will respond well and I will be able to maintain it at a smaller size until I am ready to redo the entire border. Just wanted to thank you for the old videos as well as the new ones. Your channel is a very good resource.

Thank you for such quality information. I am looking for about a 6’ evergreen for a hedge. I like this compacts holly, but also wonder if you have any others you would recommend for 7b. If I do a compacta holly, I live in Utah with a lot of snow, but not a lot of wind. Would wrapping them in burlap help them survive the winter?

I'm a landscaper in SC. Holly compacto/boxwoods are always in demand. I'm thinking about propagating for future opportunities.

I planted these as a hedge in an open area. I am in zone 6a. Should I be worried about them dying on me due to getting too cold and not being shielded from wind by the foundation?

I just purchased a new home on an acre of land. There is nothing on that land; i plants a hedge of compacta holly around the outline of the land for a natural 6 ft hedge. It faces South, I'm in the fort worth/Dallas area. It rarely snows here. Did I make a mistake planting all them? Please help

Great video - thanks............was considering this plant for a dry and full sun spot as a foundation plant in zone 7 - however I'm now concerned it may be too dry for the spot. Can you recommend another plant (same size range) perhaps a juniper?

Are the Japanese Holly Compactas deer resistant?

I bought six compacta holly plants 3 weeks ago. I forgot to water them and the leaves on them became papery. I soaked all of them a week ago. I water them 3 times for the past seven days, but have not seen any improvement. The leaves are still papery. Will they shoot out new leaves? Am I able to revive them? What should I do? Please help !!!

It will take a long time for new growth. Don't overwater them in the meantime

@@JimPutnam As you said it will take a long time for new growth, did you mean few weeks, few months or more?

I wanted to put these in front of a 12 ft porch flanked by a sidewalk and more flower bed...how many should I put across the front? I don’t just want a hedge, I want to be able to see the shape. But it says they should be planted 6ft apart?

Best solution for deer is google deer resistant plants or use a deer spray , or for nice look and can help is a cedar split rail fence to detour them . But most can find a way if really want but deer spray works well , im having to spray my hibiscus cause they keep comming back to snack

Great video! Can I plant these now? July? Or is it best to wait until Spring?
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
I would definitely plant them now. I usually do a small amount of pruning when planting this time of year. That reduces the amount of water the plant is using
@allenph20054 жыл бұрын
Do I need to get rid of the papery leaves or even trim them? How long will it take for new grow usually? Thank you Jim
@JimPutnam4 жыл бұрын
Just leave them alone until the growth starts coming back. Then cut it back to the new growth

I hate these things. Every time I’ve planted these shrubs, at least one of them start browning at the bottom, even with a routine watering regiment.
