Ha ! I was a machinist in the Australian outback Opal fields 20 years ago I'm looking at some Tungsten facing tool he's braised on some bar . I smashed some Tungsten off a deep ground rock drill with a big hammer once looking for some nice sharp bits to weld onto a bar to use on my lathe for a job.. That was well over 20 years ago and I'm still using that tool for different jobs today.. Well done boys...!

0:16 that axle was cracked a long time ago, from the rust that shows. it's a wonder it lasted that long.

Yes that bad boy sure was cracked and it still took 135 tons to snap it and who knows how long they drove it that way if that weld is just 70% of what it was new it will last long enough to more than offset the cost of the repair and after overloading it and driving it over what would be called a jeep trail in the USA along with all the other abuse they throw at it it will do just what they EXPECT to do it will SNAP and then it will go to the shop and the whole process will start over again IF IT WASN'T PROFITABLE THEY WOULD NOT DO IT that's just the economy there they roll with with what they have and they do it QUITE WELL within the parameters with witch they have to work HATS OFF TO THESE HARD WORKING MEN

Yep high cycle fatigue. The lines you see are Leuder lines, like lines on a sandy beach. They show how the crack progressed with each cycle of loading.

A lot of professionals do watch as we are interested in engineering differences, this is not engineering hardly any heat in the shaft completely out of balance even at 3pm-h this will be shaking it’s self apart and if they try to overload the axle again at least it won’t make it to the road where it would kill more then only the driver, just because they can stick things together does not make it useable for the job it’s intended for, axle already has a crap repair so they don’t learn anyway

Actually in America it's weight limits that saves all American truckers, and Canadian. Can't speak for Mexico. I'm sure most of Europe understands weight limits. These people dumbfounded

Hasn't anybody else notice that there wasn't a ground clamp on the axle when he was welding on it? In all these videos there's never a ground lead attached to the part in the lathe. These professionals are grounding the welded part with the ground lead attached to the lathe frame. I was taught eons ago that you NEVER grounded through a bearing. The best way ever to trash all the bearings in that lathe.

Seeing a previous scar on shaft, these repairs really do work! It broke at a different location!

It broke in the exact same spot it was welded once before. There were no penetration welds, simply surface welds. It will break there again as these people do not have the skill to do the job properly.

Down right scary. Totally agree, no penetration especially not even preheating that thick material. This is where the axle breaks under load and the poor guy next to the truck gets crushed.

there's a reason they put a solid axle of this size on the vehicle. dab welding two bits together is not an acceptable repair, fancy spline pin not withstanding

@@fuzzjunky That's not entirely true. The repair can be properly made if you know how to weld. Even though they "vee" joint, their welds are only surface welds. They are not really penetrating the metal. If this was welded properly, with deep penetrating welds, it would hold much better. But remember, they are also regularly overloading these vehicles.

Especially with this kind of material, based on how the first part machined. It was acting like it was heat-treated alloy steel, e.g. something like 4140 or similar.

Bloody hell, rough as guts. A failure to that extent cannot be repaired properly! New shaft needs to be made. Nothing was machined just chewed out with blunt stuffed tooling measured most part with the "eye-ommeter" & worse, zero preheating prior some of the worst ever welding and that section of shaft will just break again probably killing some people. Life is cheap!

And that is what's wrong with the western world. These guys have learnt how to repair things. In the west, they just buy new! That repair will last longer than the truck it's under. I wonder how long you would survive in their country. They do a fantastic job and far more skilled than you will ever be.

@@gordonbrown9382 You aren't an engineer, machinist, fitter-turner, welder are you? You are not seeing that all their effort though hugely commendable is completely pointless. The repair will fail a short time later simply because the structural stress fractures from such a method of welding! The region of the shaft repair is now a totally different grade of steel to the rest all because of missed out steps in repair technique. The whole piece is better off as scrap for that reason. In all honesty in the Western World the amount of risk in repairing that way would be too high & so a new piece of stock shaft would be sized & component parts transferred across.... This ensures no one is ever injured from what will be a catastrophic repeated failure but that also the customer who paid for the repair work has a wasted investment with loss of production because of the repeated breakdown. As to my skill level i doubt including botched up hack-job is one i want in my 60yrs of experience....

Very impressed with these guys ability to take what would be absolute junk, and not a second thought to repair in the states. And these guys repair it to the point of putting it back into service. Proof that where there is a will there is a way. And lacking of resources and capitol these guys are making the impossible, possible. Hope my viewing their videos help fund their efforts.

I worked at a shop in N. Dakota in the mid sixties and they welded new ends on truck differentials all the time. Never had a failure… they told me. Kinda scary seeing a differential spinning around on a 24 inch lathe. I was the errand boy picking up and delivering diffs to the truck repair shop.

Brakes aren't designed to stop heavy trucks. The transmissions are. Brakes are secondary to properly driving the truck, meaning understanding what gear to be in and being able to downshift along with the brakes. Brakes alone will NEVER stop a heavy truck. This is the reason they have manual transmissions (aside from the fact that manual tranny's can also handle a bigger load).

Well, big mouth, I've given you 4 months to figure out you're wrong. For example; ever notice those "Trucks use Low Gear" signs at hills? It's because the brakes can't hold the truck from overspeeding on a grade. You know how I know this? I drive commercially and have witnessed people dying because they were in the wrong gear on a grade and couldn't stop the truck. Usually they just kill themselves but there are other times where innocent people die because idiots like you don't know wtf they are doing or talking about. Next time stfu and think before you speak.

The guy actually oiled the ways, most shop vids from there only give it a quick hand wipe and didn't even use lube/coolant when boring, I like my tools to last longer than a couple of weeks.

Someone before modified the axle to put more weight than designed and no surprise it broke. They will be lucky if the truck makes it to the next block

I've got a lot of time for these guys... Nice clean machines, oiled the bed before use... No machine abuse such as tightening the toolpost with a hammer, protected the bed before welding and did a precision job. Proper engineers.

its an old shipyard practice for welding fillets on pipe flanges etc it can be done on 6013 rods without flux detatching but not on low hy 7016 /18 rods

Well maintained machinery, relativ clean floor, next actions recommended: - loose the loose clothing when working at a lathe - get yourself some safety glasses - wear safety shoes - throw a bucket of paint against the wall - try to negotiate a better working environment.

You can’t weld on rust and dirt, the weld area should be ground back to clean metal before welding, the rods used were too small to weld that size of steel they should of used 4mm, also the weld area should of been pre heated because that size of material would of been a huge heat sink preventing good penetration.

If not you are talking crap, the join was machined, it doesn't matter what size rods you use and the preheat is not essential just turn up the amps to start with and by the time you have done a couple of runs it is preheated. You think these guys have never done this before. Ask the client how long it lasts!! The problem over there is the use of leaf springs on bad roads

Have you seen how they "upgrade" the leaf springs on those old Hino trucks? They put some 6+ extra leaf springs on top of the original ones... Check the Pakistani Truck Channel.

It’s not the quality of metal that’s at fault it’s the tremendous amount excessive abuse of weight these parts are subjected to that largely contribute to eventual stress crack factor however these intuitive engineers incredible capabilities of repairing these back axle is insanely fascinating you cannot hold back these engineers

Intuition is a useless guide when it comes to metallurgy and welding. In fact it leads you to do the wrong things. You end up making it look good which is nowhere near making it work good. Notice how they always skimp on depth of weld and no preheating or post heat treatment, but they usually grind off the weld excesses. Looks good, works like crap.

Probably been welded every six months. For a static machine, this would be a workable idea, but for a truck that traverses the dangerous roads on mountains, the consequences of this contraption may prove too costly.
