Timing Chains have been an issue for the 2.0t TSI VW and Audi engines. Make sure to check your VW or Audi 2.0t TSI for this issue to prevent a major engine failure.

Mine is 9.45 and it runs and has been running fine.124k miles. 2009 A4 2.0T (CAEB). No engine codes, no knocks, no weird noises. Never changed timing chain, guides etc. I don't really understand how it can be ok at 9.45.

The timing chain slip occurs when a worn out and shifted under tension chain lands at a wrong tooth. The crankshaft pulley has 42 teeth, 360deg/42 = 8.57deg - angular distance between any two crankshaft teeth. So, the critical point for crankshaft slip is 8.57/2 = 4.28deg. But this is the shift between the crankshaft and chain landing at the teeth. This application measures the total phase error between the crankshaft and camshaft, and the camshaft will have its own phase shift added to the total measured phase value: 360/46teeth/2 = 3.91deg. So, the critical measured phase angle is: 4.28 + 3.91 = 8.19deg. - this is the tripping point at which your chain is guaranteed to slip.

Hey, I have an AAX engine gti mk5 and I'm reading 5 degrees on my OBDEleven, the engine also sounds like a diesel engine. Would replacing the shorted timing chain on the top with the yellow tensioner fix the problem or do I need to go deeper down. I'm not even sure if there are more chains on my vehicle since I always though that it would be a belt engine.

At -7.52 I'm late doing this and have learned that I'm super lucky! I have an 09 Passat 2.0 CCTA engine with 270k km on the car and 140k on the current updated tensioner. No noise, other than the normal I-sound-like-a-diesel sounds (I think its the hpfp?). ANYWAYS, what else should I be changing to account for chain stretch? Just tensioner+chain? Or should I plan for any guides/etc? Everything is original except the tensioner

Is the extension distance of the tensioner any indication? My 2009 A3 is apart, in my garage, getting a new timing chain as I write this. With he old chain/tensioner/guides the tensioner was nearly fully extended. With the new parts, it's only out about two notches. It seems the chain stretch is part of the reason for chain noise, the other part being worn guides. ~130,000 miles.

Is there some other place, or some other name to look for it....or some other way to do the reset......the engine starts immediately(it had the typical stretched chain lag before chain replacement), and the adaptation value is way under 5%,....but its running very rough.....appreciate any help you can offer....thanks!

Hello I have valve cover / cam cover gasket leak (green anaerobic sealant) on 2012 vw CC (2.0 TTsi engine)... my car is at 133k miles and I have never had the timing chain tensioner / chain itself replaced. My local mechanic is telling me that when he removes the cam cover to replace the green anaerobic sealant it is really recommended to do the timing chain tensioner and chain itself as removing the cover without doing it can throw the engine out of time. He is quoting me $950 for the gasket replacement and $1700 for the gasket / timing chain / tensioner work. Is it really necessary to do this when you do the gasket to keep it in time? At what mileage does the chain / tensioner usually mess up? Reasonable pricing? Thank you so much for what you do.

I have a 2010 audi a4 , had intake valves bent rebuilt head at machinesho, new pistons and rings chains guides and all. Engine still has a loss of power. Something that I did not know is Intake and exhaust camshafts sprockets are pressed on , that means if your engine goes out of time to point that bends valves it could potentially move lobes out of position and you would never get proper timing , I think that's what is happening with my engine , so to verify I will have to take it apart and inspect camshaft lobes, a shitty design . I would like to know how to check for the sprockets and lobes out of time I just don't want to spend money on camshafts they are very expensive. Please help, thank you.

Car idle is at 800-840rpm and shows 1.75 degree on value 3. Thanks for the video. Now to figure out why my bug is sluggish these days.

Do the +/-5.00 values apply to TFSI engines as well, or just the TSI? If they only apply to the TSI, are there known values for the TFSI? Also curious as to whether those values are of concern in the absence of any other indicators of chain wear. I was under the impression a chain, unlike a belt, will give some obvious signs of wear and imminent failure (e.g., noisy, misfires, and ultimately DTCs and/or MIL illumination).

Mine was a ~-5,5° and the exhaust one was already one tooth over, so I was pretty lucky to get out with a healthy engine in the end.

hey i have a question? on 6/25/22 i replaced my timing chain, guides, tensioner, and balance shaft chain and guides. When i finished block 93 read "-0.066*". i just checked it last evening and it reads "-0.92*". Would something had to occur for it to move "-0.26*"?
