This was my favorite band at the time, and hearing this song at the end was just so painful and haunting yet beautiful. Part eulogy and almost a reassurance to friends.

As you stated he wrote and demoed this song then handed it to Matt the vocalist on Christmas Eve or Christmas I believe. I may be wrong but I believe he said "I'm done I gave everything" On top of that as you mentioned the song was originally called Death, but the band changed it to Fiction. Fiction was a nickname for The Rev. Most demos are rough, many of them have little to no lyrics. They'll kind of just hum a tune and say nonsense in the tune they want then form the lyrics as the writing process progresses. The fact he had so haunting lyrics recorded so clearly and defined it's honestly chilling. The bit of into that hurts the most to me as a fan was delivered by Matt this past year around the anniversary of Jimmy's death. He revealed that the night Jimmy died he called/texted Matt and wanted to party and Matt told him that he and his wife were tired and just going to go to bed. Please don't take that wrong. No fault or issue with Matt saying or doing that. I just kind of put myself in the mindset that if I was Matt then that would have destroyed me. I believe that hurt him a lot and that's why he didn't mention it for 15 years. Anyways this is a very dark song. There's a lot behind it. The band reached out to to one of the greatest drummers ever and one of Jimmy's idols in Mike Portnoy and he stepped in to record the album and tour for a bit. Mike killed it.

The demo was actually leaked earlier this year and is on youtube. A lot of the lyrics you hear in the final song weren't in the demo, a majority of the vocals were scratch vocals and basically incomprehensible (which isn't unusual at all for some of their early demos) There's still a chance that Jimmy recorded the demo first and maybe wrote the final lyrics afterwards. But my assumption is that the rest of the band took what they could from Jimmy's scratch vocals and wrote the lyrics from there afterwards

@raptus3049 buddy you're not wrong but you missed what I said. I just listened to it for maybe the first time. I don't recall ever listening to this but what I said is true. I didn't mean the lyrics in total. I meant the lyrics he sang on the actual song. And in the demo they are there, meanwhile the rest is like I said, kind of nonsense trying to build up a flow to work on. But the fact he had those lyrics that made sense and were so clear... It just cuts deep. Those vocals aside from being isolated and cleaned up a bit are very much in the song. "Now I think I know how this world can overcome a man" "Not that I could or that I would. Let it burn under my skin, let it burn" x2 "I hope it's worth it, here on the highway, yeah. I know you'll find your own way I'm not with you" "I hope you'll find your own way when I'm not with you tonight" It's so fucking haunting. It's been 15 damn years. That's just insane.

@@cfishernb The wording in your original comment sounded like you were referring to the entirety of the lyrics in the final track rather than just the stuff he actually sang. But yeah the few bits and pieces you can actually understand are definitely haunting

Its hard for me to understand when people say they listened to them but not anymore. I know their stuff within the past 10 years isn't like what they had back in the day, but it grows on you and I have seen this with multiple of my favorite bands over the decades. Because when I make the decision that I love the band for what they create, that love doesn't go away like a bad marriage, its here to stay through thick and thin.

I’m one of these people. I absolutely adore everything they made prior to The Stage but the new sound just doesn’t get as much replay value for me. I can appreciate the art, but when it comes to what I want to listen to, I love CoE and Nightmare so much

This album was an absolute masterpiece! Mike Portnoy did great on the drums, respected The Revs part completely! Glad you checked this song in particular, it's usually overlooked on the album.

The Rev’s passing was drug related, but it is possible to assume he chose to leave how he did due to an enlarged heart he was born with. He never expected to live long and possibly when it started to become more of an issue he wrote this song and found his peace. The song Brompton Cocktail from the album before this one is haunting to look back to after his passing because it’s basically him explaining his upcoming choice. I highly recommend that song as well. It’s a bummer but it gives insight into his passing

Jfc matt wrote the lyrics to Brompton Cocktail not Jimmy 🙄 jimmy helped write the song, but the lyrics on that were all Matt.

The lines The Rev sings are Now I think I understand, how this world can overcome a man. Not that I could or that I would, let it burn under my skin, let it burn. I hope it's worth it out on the highway yeah, I know you'll find your own way when I'm not with you. So the rest of the vocals are M Shadows.

All of the nasal voice is Jimmy. He sings most of the song with Matt doubling until the end.

@RobbieFitzgerald actually it's only these lines, that was the only ones they had from The Rev. Everything else is M Shadows singing both the high and low vocal.
