That's exactly what this song is. He wrote the song, gave it to his band members and told them he already recorded his parts, and a few days later, he was dead. The original name of the song was Death.
@jaydenbutler69713 жыл бұрын
although it seems like a suicide note.. that's not the case, M. Shadows said in an interview on kerrang radio, "He wrote all these lyrics about finding the way when he's not there any more," - "It was as though he knew he wasn't going to be with us much longer." which seems to me that rev did know he didn't have much time left, he was told that he would be very lucky if he made it past 30 but that sadly didn't happen. i just think that he loved his friends/family and music too much to want to leave them purposely, so its seems to me that this song was written by rev knowing that he didn't have much time. telling his loved ones, especially the band to keep going even after hes gone "I know you'll find your own way when I'm not with you tonight" (if you disagree id like to hear what your thoughts are)

@NeverDieAloneMusic3 жыл бұрын
I too believe it wasn't a suicide note, but more in line with something akin to a Will. James was known to be a heavy drinker, and with the prescriptions he was taking for his heart, it just so happened to be 3 days later that he passed. Everyone knew he would, but no one knew WHEN. It was an "accident". (I put it in quotes because there are people who say "mixing drugs and alcohol is never an accident" regardless of circumstance).
@craighenry23512 жыл бұрын
That covers everything I have heard about The Rev’s death. The amazing thing is that he finished all of his parts so soon before his death. He knew death was coming, but he was allowed to finish the most important song the band ever made before he died.

The media sites have been a little shifty about this song and the circumstances around it over the years. The Rev recorded his piano and vocal parts on Christmas Day. He had recently gotten Lasik surgery for his eyes so he could see properly for the first time in a long time. He was given various medications for it as well as his heart medication. Three days later, Zacky Vengeance threw a cocktail party. The Rev was one of the last people to leave, and he was sober the entire time according to Zacky. Jimmy started walking home and Zacky gave him a bottle of wine because he didn't want him to feel left out. His girlfriend found him the next morning. Toxicology reports said he didn't have a high enough dose of alcohol in his system for his death to be intentional, but due to his weakened state and his medication, his heart failed. It wasn't a suicide, but he definitely knew his body wasn't strong enough for him to live much longer. The band had to have Mike Portnoy re-record his drum parts, but the piano and vocals stayed. Synyster Gates opted not to play a solo, making this the first Avenged Sevenfold song not to have any guitar on it. This song is sacred territory for us friends. I'm glad you enjoy it. Keep up the great work, and definitely consider checking out the song Eternal Rest.

@@bhaktiaksaraputra6604 even before that, for about 5 years, sites like Metal Hammer and Kerrang would write articles saying The Rev meant to take his life, and that's just not true. They wanted to sell magazines. Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold have shared a lot of fans for ages, being the popular arena bands that make it on the radio, and the media glamorizes suicide to such a huge degree that anyone who has a story will run the depression aspect of a person's life into the ground. The Rev wasn't healthy, and Chester was emotionally sick because of the media and all of the people who expected things of him. The fans haven't been fair to either Jimmy or Chester since they passed, or their band members.

I’m not denying that the story you recounted is true, but how would you explain lyrics such as “I hope it’s worth it” or “the fact that Jimmy wrote Bromptom Cocktail which explains pretty much exactly how he died? I don’t want it to have been suicide, but it’s hard to ignore some of the things that lead people to think it was. Either way, R.I.P. Jimmy.

I don't know what it is, I've heard this song a thousand times over. Yet after a little while of not listening to it. Listening to it again for the first time in a while, watching this video. Literally made me cry at the end. Such a powerful song.
@ayapamungkas22673 жыл бұрын
This song is a song that I feared the most from the record. I can't really listen to it on full concentration mode cz I would just cry (yeah, I cried watching this vid). One thing that I want to believe is that Jimmy didn't die out of suicide. He was overdosed on prescribed medication combined with intoxication of alcohol. He might just want to subside the pain but his body couldn't take it. I just don't want to think that he was intentionally taking his own life. Man, his death was hard for me. I was a huge fan throughout my middle school years. When the news broke out, it felt like I was striked by a thunder on a daylight. Then I distanced myself from the band, from the scene, for like 10-11 years cz then when I entered highschool, I had no one that really shared this same feeling that I felt. Can't believe it took me like 10-11 years to heal. I'm so sorry...

@Falkuzrules3 жыл бұрын
I just found this channel less than 24 hours after this went up and I'm watching most of the A7X videos you've done now (if you can't tell by my icon). Gotta say, in the current extremely greedy environment that is KZbin, where you see these moneygrabbers censoring the word "suicide" because they'll get demonetized for it, I respect you for putting it right in the title and not trying to dance around it. I just wanted to say, one thing that always bothered me about this song and the whole "story" of The Rev in general is that for some reason the rest of the band has always been in huge denial that his death was intentional - at least from what I've seen. They made a song called Brompton Cocktail, which if I understand correctly is the name of a mixture of drugs and alcohol that used to be given to patients near death. The song's clearly about suicide and the transition to it from the previous song on the album sounds a bit like a heartbeat, and you know about Rev's heart. Two years later, he literally gives them a suicide note, then dies from an overdose of drugs and alcohol, and they say it was a sad accident... really? I understand if it helped them cope in the moment, but I feel like it's almost disrespectful - like he laid out this entire plan ahead of time and then they just brush it off, when they could bring lots of awareness to suicide like Linkin Park has done. (A7X's singer actually made an appearance in their tribute show to Chester, he did great singing with them, considering it's not his style of music!) Sorry if this comment was way too long, I just wanted to share the story - and of course suggest Brompton Cocktail in the process! Musically it's pretty energetic even though the lyrics are dark, and the way it sounds gives me a mental image of a jungle. You'll understand if you hear it.

This song was originally titled Death by the Rev but the band decided to call it Fiction, one of Jimmy's other nicknames. The Rev had an enlarged heart and was told by doctors he'd never see 30 years old. M Shadows, the singer always dismissed the thought of suicide, but Syn the guitar player in an interview said he believed Rev had this all planned out because of that. Rev had been writing this song for years and finally finished it. He was at the end of his 20s and when he turned in the demo for this song he told M Shadows that "this is it. this is the last song. the album is done. I've given everything i could for you guys" and 3 days later he was found dead. all of rev's work on the lyrics is typical of demos....usually it's a lot of mumbling and not refined work. it's just a demo afterall. the band decided to keep the rev's piano and vocal parts in. Rev was on piano and actually played all the parts for the demo but the band had to do some filling in and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) played the drum parts and Shadows filled in on lyrical work. on other some parts of the album his father actually did the drums also many say in the end of the song when he talks about "the ones who walk beside me" he's talking to his pallbearers. He knew his best friends and family would be carrying him. walking beside him.

Something that's frequently lost in the impact in this song is that this album was originally written as a concept album, and this song was originally written as part of that story. Many of us avenged fans don't believe Jimmy killed himself, and short of anyone in the band directly saying that he did (which they haven't) I don't think any of us will believe that he did. He didn't know he had a heart condition, according to the guys, and had been up partying the night before he died. Prescription meds have killed by accident before, especially when mixed with alcohol, and Fiction being written several days before a horrifying, eerie coincidence.
@nicholasbrewer20232 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think Jimmy tried or even thought of killing himself or outright dying in general. I just think he really felt that " this is it. This is the final song. This is the best way to cap off Nightmare" He may have had ideas for album number 6 brewing in his head when they finished Nightmare at the time.

Knowing all of what I said about what actually happened, I think many people get premonitions of their up coming demise. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X both acted in a way before their assassinations, that made them easier for the perpetrators to pull off. Plain and simple, The Rev saw the end coming and wanted to pen this note to his bandmates to both say goodbye and give them hope. I know you’ll find your own way, when I’m not with you, tonight. That line contains plenty of hope. He is gone, but he knows his friends will survive this and be allright.

His death was never ruled a suicide. He had been sick and the combination of things he took for relief, plus his prexisting condition combined for his death to occur. As a chronic bronchitis sufferer, I am sure I have come very close to lethal combinations, just to get relief. It isn’t hard to take too much medicine, in search of relief. When I had Covid on top of the bronchitis, I’m sure I barely stayed safe in medicating myself during that period.

@Martin Arscott: I respect your point and you might be right, but, especially on this song, I’m not sure the lyrics do support that assumption. People have premonitions about their death and speak them out all the time. In Martin Luther King’s speech in Memphis, shortly before his death, there seem to be allusions to the fact that he saw it coming. Maybe it is wishful thinking, but what I get from Fiction is that he knew his time was coming and wanted to prepare those closest two him. Let’s agree on this. Regardless of what happened, it is a beautiful song and a marvelous send off to a brilliant musician and songwriter.
