After 3 beautiful days of sunshine and expected rain tomorrow, I need to get back in the hives to see how much nectar these girls have been bringing in. I also want to make sure that we've got any potential swarms under control -- which means killing any swarm cups. So let's get in there!! 🐝🐝🐝
Welcome to my third year of keeping bees, where I plan to learn even more about raising pollinators and maybe even get a little honey in the process.
Be sure to check out my other channel, Emmymade in Japan!

Yes next time (spring ) add supers earlier when u just start to see drone cells. Also if you tried your 5 day inspection trick more then 3 times . Then ill take the orginal queen and make a split with a nuc.. that way It usually stops the swarming ... also once your virgin queen mates and if she dosent come back or has issues,,, you can always re introduce your old queen !! ;) great videos :) dont stop

Hey Emmy! Great post! Just a couple of observations- if there’s no excluder, it’s not a super, just another brood box. You can see the queen on the top box on the black frame timestamp frame 4:30 very top of frame. Just when you say “great” you seemed excited by the nectar & probably assumed the queen wouldnt be in the top frame.

I understand (and, in my limited experience, found it to be mostly true) queens tend not to climb above the top deep to lay eggs. Some refer to queen excluders as honey excluders.

There has been a queen in the last 4 days is all you can really know if you see eggs :)
@mohawksniper79
@mohawksniper79 5 жыл бұрын
Next time you should try doing your split with the queen not the cell the queen will only lay in the cup if she wants to swarm you can make more splits with the cell but one of the splits have to be the queen. your big hive will make a new queen and still collect resources well they're making a queen. Once the queen lays an egg in that cup she can Swarm at any time they don't need to finish building the cell as long as there's an egg in the cell she can take off and will.

I'm facing a similar situation. Was odd that I found a few (not many) eggs that were properly laid which suggests it wasn't a drone laying. I had a couple of capped Queen cells and could not locate my marked queen. I believe mine swarmed at some point as the population seems lower...so I left the queen cell in peace. Eager to get in and see whats going on in there. Enjoy your vids!

hi, i like your channel, i saw all your videos in a couple of days, you look really knowledgeable about beekeeping, also really sweet and lovely. i am new bk too , i just want give you one advice(sorry bit long), you have too many swarm and beetle issue, probably for 2 main issue: 1st you should give up with short brood chamber and go with deep, 2 short are not the same as one deep, your hive are too tall and every level give separation from the other, bees do not sense the queen pheromone, bees use wax as living tissue to move informations and pheromones within the hive, having to many separations make the "infos" slow down from bottom to top, brood chamber should be 1 or max 2 hive stacked. also all those levels make way easier to beetle to run away and find way to hide. 2nd it could also be a bad queen genetic that push be to swarm too much, you should contact a good BK who can sell you a proven good genetic queen with less swarming dna. thank you. PS i heard one of your kid speak japanese in the video, but you do not look japanese :=) bye

I have a stupid question LOL. When you smash the "Swarm cells" is it killing a potential future Queen? I mean I know and understand why you do it, just wondering if there was any way you could salvage that potential Queen. Or are they sometimes just empty? (OK maybe SEVERAL stupid questions lol)

Why not just let the two hives from hive 3 re-queen themselves if the main hive 3 is actually queenless? I mean, the queens be harder to spot, but you also have a booming hive, so the original queen's DNA might be worth holding on to? And if either fails to make a queen, then you can combine the two again, or just buy a queen, or is combining hives impossible?

If you let a queen hatch and the other bees are ok with her they have to swarm. That is part of the mating process. It's not guaranteed they will come back to the same hive that they left... They could end up in a tree limb out a mile away, you just never know.

I don't understand what the big deal with letting them swarm is. If it's natural and there are new queens being made, why not let them just do their thing??? I can't forget when she squished one of the queens heads. Seems like too much involvement in these hives and for what reason??? Is she in the honey business or something?

I mean she did have an entire hive die when she left them alone while on vacation and they are constantly doing things really quickly without her knowing. I think it's normal for her since she wants to constantly care for the same group of bees to learn their behavior to be a better bee keeper.

Honey Bees do two things, they reproduce and they make honey. Trying to manipulate a hive after they have made up their mind to swarm is like trying to make water run uphill. I think it's a disservice to the viewer to think that managing a hive in this fashion is good for the bees or realistic for any person interested in keeping bees
