My all time favorite show. John razenburger auditioned for the role of Norm, realised that he didn't make the cut.He then asked the producers if they had a know it all smart ass for the bar. They said no, and the he launched into his cliff Calvin persona. They liked it so much they created the character for John.

I met John Ratzenberger at a beautiful resort country club that was hosting a Jim Beam anniversary celebration that was interesting and a lot of fun. He is such a lovely man! Very friendly and pleasant n personable ..down to earth n good natured. He told some funny stories and we had a few laughs and my sister n I both got to actually have a Cheers with him! I felt so special I got to meet John ...Cliff Claven.. and actually have a drink with him! He is as adorable in real life as he is on screen. 🤗❤️✨

Give props for John’s physical comedic chops! He really sold that jittery robot shuffle. I can’t imagine how his knees and ankles must have felt like after. You know they had to rehears, and do multiple takes from multiple camera angles to get that scene, that perfect. Plus look how spooky-fast he is on his reactions to the single shocks. Wow!

@@Fakeaorta, you nailed it. This scene fails without his great skills. He is my personal favorite character on the show. It was an inscription on the NYC General Post Office Building, quoting Herodotus, describing the courier service of the Persian Empire: "It is said that as many days as there are in the whole journey, so many are the men and horses that stand along the road, each horse and man at the interval of a day’s journey; and these are stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed."
