Lovebites is a good example of how Japanese power metal does give us nuances that slightly separate them into their own subgenre from their Euro/western cousins. Highly technically skilled on all instruments.

One of the things you;re going to find out about Lovebites is that that they have something of a diversity, with songs such as "Swan Song" and "Frozen Serenade" which carry very classical progressive and story themes, as matched against songs like "Holy War" which are arguably the definition of relentless. "Winds of Transylvania" is another such song, which sits nicely alongside "Holy War" and the afore-reacted "Set The World on Fire"/"Raise Some Hell".. Looking forward to the new album (with FAMI, our new bass player!) in Feb!

LOVEBITES - Thunder Vengeance lyrics: Gods of vengeance Standing in the nightmare The peal of thunder broke me and more When losing my eye The days will pass before me A faded memory of what used to be Death by oblivion (Do it) Deadly criterion (Do it) Flames of despair burning My blood is boiling inside me Death by oblivion (Do it) Deadly criterion (Do it) Inner enraged demon is becoming me Here come days of revenge Until the day the light can reach into my blind eye Lost in the rage These scars are here to tell me that I’m still alive Into the blackness Don’t reveal weakness Hiding my curses, pay off an old grudge Forgotten feelings, other than resentment Don’t even mind giving others pain Damn the redemption (Do it) Drowning confusion (Do it) Doom filled with righteous indignation Where’s my salvation? LOVEBITES - Holy War lyrics: Look at those black clouds, it’s going to rain blood People live in fear, covered in mud Singing oh Gloria to change the prophecy We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for sisters There is a thousand, a thousand of evils Hush, do not wake up Satan’s devils Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for brothers Shining blade and burning heart Into the Gates of Hell we march Immortal soul, let there be light Into the Eye of Heaven Eagles at a holy war Fly higher than the sun We are one for all and all for one forevermore SOLO: midori Kingdom of Heaven, never shall we fall Reincarnation, wait for your call Singing oh, Gloria to change the prophecy We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for sisters Morning star and dying moon Into the Gates of Hell we march Mighty soul, let there be hope Into the Eye of Heaven Eagles at a holy war Fly higher than the sun Stand up in the name of the God of heavy metal What do we live for? What do we fight for, tonight? But the world is beautiful, worth fighting for Only have one thing on our mind Facing the fate, holy war SOLO: miyako / midori / both Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty We are the metal warriors Fighting the darkness for brothers Shining blade and burning heart Into the Gates of Hell we march Immortal soul, let there be light Into the Eye of Heaven Eagles at a holy war Fly higher than the sun We are one for all and all for one forevermore What do we live for? What do we fight for, tonight? As far as the uniforms, they only wore them in this show for this song. They wore them again in ride for vengeance tour for the encore, which started with thunder vengeance (instead of opening the show like they did in this one). Also, this concert opened with thunder vengeance, followed by holy war, so you literally just watched the beginning of the show :)

For a blistering solo by Midori (the blonde guitarist) and another solo by Miyako (the dark-haired guitarist) with this kind of feeling, try "Break the Wall". I have a feeling you'll love that song. For wonderful backing vocals you can't beat "Empty Daydream". You'll get a sample of Miyako's keyboard prowess with that one, not to mention stunning vocal feats by Asami.

The first two Lovebites songs you heard, Set the World on Fire and Raise Some Hell, were composed by Miyako. In these two songs you get to hear the compositions of Mao (the bands "6th member") and the bassist Miho. Mao was the keyboardist/composer for a very good power metal band called Light Bringer which ended in 2014. He now composes for other bands, particularly Lovebites and a new band called Lonesome Blue. The songs composed by Miho (10), Asami (4) and Midori (2) have all been in collaboration with Mao, except for the song Break the Wall which was cowritten by Miho and Miyako. Other than Break the Wall, Miyako has composed her songs (20 of them) alone. Thunder Vengeance was a Miho/Mao composition and Miho got the inspiration for it after seeing Slayer in concert. Holy War is one of five songs composed solely by Mao. I am interested to see if Mao's involvement is the same in the upcoming album or if Miyako's creative control has increased.

The opening five-pointed star indicates the tour title, "Five of a Kind," and their third full-length album, "ELECTRIC PENTAGRAM," which was released a month before this live concert. At the concert, the songs recorded in this album were mainly performed. A week after this concert, Japan went into lockdown, and they couldn't hold a live concert for a year.

first song. "holy war" was the second. maybe warm up the voice? they really are something else, including phenomenal vocalist asami. and now they have a bassplayer, who is on M&M (miyako and midori) level. new album will be out in february. miyako announced today, that the guitartracks are recorded. and if it doesn´t have always thrash and/or speed/powermetal for you, I recommend swan song with the chopin intro from the same concert and "a frozen serenade" from their tokyo 2021 cocert in tokyo. you won´t be dissappointed.

Two great songs to play together. Great Reaction, man. Two more that would go well together. are "Scream For Me" (14 guitar solos) and "Epilogue", one of the best ballads that I have ever heard in all of my years of listening to music, since my first record ... Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon' in 1973. Yep. I've grown up with all of the greats. These women have sparked my interest in new music again, after all of the staid detritus, of the commercial music industry from the last couple of decades. They are bringing the essence of true rock & metal back to the world. I am so proud of them. You've earned my sub for your efforts with these women & your BAND-MAID reactions. They do the same for me. Keep at it man.

Haruna is one of my 3 favorite drummers ever. The other two are Thomas Haake from Meshuggah and Dave Lombardo from Slayer/Grip Inc (I like Dave in Grip Inc better). Did you notice Haruna's triple beats thrown in on Thunder Vengeance? Asami's voice seems to throw so many people off. Her vocals ARE Lovebites. It took me a moment to adjust to her, and now I love her.

Lovebites is an amazing band! The members of the band are: Asami (lead vocals), Midori and Miyako (guitars), Miho (bass) although she is no longer in the band, Haruna (drums). Asami's vocals definitely shine more in Holy Wars and other songs like: The Crusade, Edge of the World, Epilogue, Frozen Serenade, and Dancing With The Devil; among others. The opening to Thunder Vengeance is great but I think the intro The Awakening leading into Hammer of Wrath is one of the best show openers I've ever seen, it is epic! Lovebites just recently announced their new album Judgement Day is going to be coming out next year, their first album with new bass player Fami!

Just found your channel, appreciate your reactions! You pick up on a few of their nuances and subtleties which really can make you sit up and take note. Asami (vocalist) is primarily from and R&B background, and really comes into her own in the more soulful, emotive compostions such as Empty Daydream and Edge of the World. Haruna the drummer is enormously underrated in my opinion. She drives the band forward unassumingly. I think it's more because of the way Lovebites conduct themselves on stage, as some other bands tend to focus more on spectacle and share the musical limelight across the instruments whereas Lovebites rythym section drives the tune, leaving the twin leads of Midori and Miyako to do their thing. Miyako's more soulful moments such as the opening to Above the Black Sea, and her solos in Break the Wall and Edge of the World, just ooze pure class. There are nods to classical composers of old in the construction of these guitar solos, as well as the numerous occasions she switches to the piano, her primary instrument. It will be interesting to see how their new material develops stylistically with new bassist Fami, a bass prodigy in her own right. Expect higher levels of complexity for sure. I'd recommend checking out some of their studio live performances, for a more stripped back version of their capabilities, should that interest you in the future

If you like playing Japanese girls, you'll have something to listen to for the next few months. Besides Band-Maid and Lovebites, there are many bands that play great. Brideat (more progressive), Nemophila (very diverse, a bit like a supergroup), Lonesome_Blue (play a bit lighter, great guitarist), Hagane (also a great guitarist), Fate Gear (steam punk, leader Mina formed the first band of this wave all femal M/HR bends in 2005 (Destroya)), Destrose, Aldious, Mary's Blood (three classic bands, only Aldious works),... There are mixed bands: Asterism (instrumental metal, phenomenal HAL-CA on guitar, 7 string bass), absolute the classic and phenomenon Maximum the Hormone,... And of course a lot of great male bands (Loudness, X Japan, MUCC, Dir En Grey,..). I will recommend 3 tracks (Lovebites and Band-Maid fans have already given a lot of suggestions, I will give from other bands). 【花冷え。】-我甘党- (WE LOVE SWEETS) Music Video【HANABIE.】(add:English Lyrics) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWKbqqyshaiciq8 NEMOPHILA / REVIVE [Official Music Video] kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ61nomZadpkbtk Maximum the Hormone - Alien マキシマム ザホルモン "え・い・り・あ・ん" kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipXahWiAoa1rna8

I suspect Miyako has an octave pedal engager/disengager on her effects box, where her wa-wa pedal is. To my knowledge, Midori does not use one. I learned about this device only this past year, after watching some videos from Gacharic Spin's Tomo-Zo. That's another band to check out. Very different from Lovebites but another ensemble of highly talented musicians.

@Cheezy: As a vocalist, I'd give good odds that the melody and tempo of some of your songs were easier to perform live. While the vocal quality is present, sometimes the structure of the song, the tambor or the lyrical flow just simply doesn't grab your ear. Doesn't mean you necessarily missed anything or perhaps a particular track grabs your attention away with a flawless bassline, killer drum fills or a hooky riff. Also, how often do you hear a vocalist get stronger as the set list progresses and the opener is the true warmup no matter what exercises one does backstage.

@@Cheezyxyz Actually, I don't agree at all. If you look at the lyrics of Thunder Vengeance (written by Miho) they are very dark. Asami likes to convey the mood of the lyrics in the way she sings. In my opinion, she is better than most vocalists in "acting" the song. In the song Set the World on Fire from the 2021 concert she sings in that same solemn tone in parts of the song while in full Asami belt in other parts. Set the World on Fire was the 4th song of the set. The first song was When Destinies Align and Asami, as is fitting for the song, was very strong, especially at the end of it when she shows off her amazing high belt which I don't think you have heard yet.

@@danw6048 Please don't take it that I was knocking Asami's performance in the least. As you said, some songs do have a more somber mood that can be conveyed through the instrument tuning and the vocal delivery. Most bands begin a show with a song that is well received with their fans attending but the set list usually will start with a track that gets everyone loosened up. Soundchecks are generally at least a couple of hours prior and most vocalists never go all in no matter how talented. Many times you will hear strange animal calls from a venue's restroom just prior to showtime. One "trick" that some also use is a start of show crowd greet such as, "how are you doing tonight?" often repeated at a higher volume.

@@steveherman6909 There is a video of their day long preparation for this concert which was probably an extra on the Blu-ray. Asami was doing her warmups in the dressing room just prior to taking the stage (fortunately she didn't have to use a restroom for that). Although I don't have much experience with the routines of vocalists in bands, I have plenty of experience with vocalists in musical theatre. Both my wife and son have performed many times on stage (my son is currently at a Conservatory in the Musical Theatre program). Asami's prep work was very similar to vocalists before a stage musical. Stage vocalists rarely get a warmup song. In the case of Asami, I doubt she needs a warmup either. In the 2019 tour, the first song was Addicted. In that song, the first thing out of her mouth is a full blown belt. The 2021 opener, When Destinies Align, is not an easy song, especially the chorus. Thunder Vengeance and Holy War were the first two songs in 2020 for the simple reason that they are the first two songs on Electric Pentagram which was released about a month before the two 2020 shows.

@@danw6048 I was unaware of the BTS for Lovebites, so thanks for sharing that! The restroom scenario works better for some if it is tiled for slightly better acoustics if the vocalist is checking their pitch and not just massaging their cords for a 45-145 minute stage performance. I've also known some to down a cup of warm, not hot, tea before going out to allow themselves to hit their range in stride out of the gate. I won't pretend to know anything about musical theatre. As far as I understand, performers are without mics through a PA and rely on their own talent to naturally broadcast their lines to the audience. Very cool that you have family involved in the arts 😄

Another great Cheezy reaction. The musical skill of every member of this band is outstanding! I really enjoy watching people react to them, but I still have one issue... I don't get the lyrics. I don't know how to describe it, but the way the lead sings makes her word harder for me to understand, I recognize some word in english here and there, but would not expect a Japanese band to cater to the anglo speaking countries/audience. I also admit my fault since I have not gone and looked them up the lyrics. I will have to correct this because I believe that if I ACTUALLY knew what each song is about, I could enjoy it much more. I wonder if anyone else has discover good music in a foreign language and them gained more enjoyment after learning what the lyrics say?

I know what you mean. When I first discovered Band-Maid, it was hard cause it's like 80% Japanese lyrics and 20% English lyrics. Between using the subtitles and Google translate, I can enjoy their vocals more now knowing what they are saying. So with Lovebites, they actually sing almost all their songs in English. It could be her accent that might throw some people off, but I'm almost certain they do most if not all their songs in English.

Some of the Lovebites videos have CC and subtitles which helps a lot. Once you listen to those and can match what you are hearing to the words it gets a lot better and you can understand everything perfectly, so always utilize CC if it is available.

I believe on their first release, which was a 4 track EP, one song was in Japanese and the rest in English. All four songs were then included on their first full length album and the Japanese lyrics on that single song were changed to English. Miho, the founder, created the band with the intent that all songs be in English. Her idea was that Lovebites would have an old school sound in the tradition of the NWOBHM, especially Iron Maiden and Helloween. Miho also believed it would be more difficult to get the sound she wanted while the vocals were sung in Japanese. Last, she wanted to have quick success overseas which definitely happened in Europe in 2018 and 2019. Asami had experience singing in English with her Soul and R&B background, and she, along with Midori, are the best at speaking in English.

@@KyleM636 I would have not thought that most of the lyrics in Lovebites songs are in english. I have to pay more attention. I believe you are right on the accent being partially part of my problem, but I also thing it has a bit to do on how she seems to stretch word to fit the music - IMHO.

I know you went back a couple times to look at the bassist doing the "solo" bit. Did you notice that Midori puts her pick in her mouth right as the bassist walks up to tap the foot pedal, then takes it out afterward? What you don't see in the video is Midori actually did it on her guitar, not Miho on the bass. It's a cleverly timed fake out to make you think the bassist actually did it.
