Oh, I really like that app! We have a very similar iniciative over here in Brazil called "Desrotulando" (or "Unlabelling", in english) and it's super helpful. It's based on the Food Guide for the Brazilian People, which companies like Coca-Cola HATE because it classifies sodas as the nutritiously poor things they are lol. The people behind it also use their platforms to educate people on produce and sazonality so you can make informed choices on things that don't have labels as well. One of my favourite iniciatives from the last few years!
@davidlawrence87113 жыл бұрын
Gosh I wish people in New Zealand would use a something like that and learn about seasonality. For a country that is basically a giant farm, we are really, really good at forgetting things go in seasons, and people get upset about the price of out of season produce all the time.
@mariaah30733 жыл бұрын
@@davidlawrence8711 people in Brazil are moving towards that same mindset. Produce is our main export, our whole economy depends on it, but still people seem to not understand how produce works and want things to have the same quality and price throughout the year.
@bracco233 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure a lot of the stuff on the app comes from the box themselves. There is a lot of marketing going on the labels, but there is also a lot of stuff they are forced to add by law, like the nutritional values per 100g(or ml), which are the best way to compare two similar products. Sadly in the UK the weight doesn't seem to be mandatory, as it isn't the address of the factory producing the product (two things which would be really useful in identifying good or bad products or comparing the nutritional values of a part of the box)
@Ellyerre3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, and in the EU it's mandatory to label the origin of some products (although sometimes it's just EU or non-EU) as well as if it's bio/organic farming, which I'm sure that's a big part of how they calculate the "eco-score". And I'm sure many products sold in the UK are also sold in the EU, like that exact almond milk, so all that information is available. And many countries have their own nutritional scores, although they vary wildly and I don't find them particularly useful or easy to use.
@LinSquiggly3 жыл бұрын
I feel as though the idea of a processing score is a bit reductive, it is true that some processed foods are less good for us and the environment, but conversely, processing food is something that makes many staple foods available and safe to eat, such as milk, grains, meat, stuff like that, processing can be bad but it can also be very good, as it opens up a wider diet in a way that, when done right, is safer than the alternative of consuming an unprocessed alternative, (such as unpasteurized milk, for instance, pasteurization is a mechanical processing of milk to kill pathogens and make it safe to consume) the ecological impact is much more clear cut, the less food travels to arrive on our table, the better, dunno, just kinda irked by the insinuation in the app that more processing is automatically bad, it's the green to red scale they have i think, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme
@marianschoeller87642 жыл бұрын
I was looking exactly for this comment. People who purely see processed as bad and unprocessed as good are mentally unwell. Get me out of this world where we try to demonize certain processes or certain foods or food groups without any nuance or understanding of biology or endicronology.

For sure. Processing food is a lot like say, genetic modification. You can't just blanket score something as bad for being a GMO food, because sometimes genetic modification is actually a beneficial thing. There's a whole sector of GMO research dedicated to making crops that can survive in more extreme environments, and that will yield bigger harvests while needing less resources to grow. Just imagine the impact that could have in areas where not much grows. World hunger would decrease because of that! And by having more produce options in these less fertile areas, it would decrease people's reliance on animal agriculture (which isn't actually a crazy super polluter like people think. Iirc globally it accounts for like 10% of emissions) and make it harder for bad actors to exploit these food insecure places.

I think what I love is that they call the astronaut ice cream a new food trend, but I distinctly remember going to Johnson Space Center in Houston as a child circa 2000 and getting that exact same bag of that exact same ice cream. That’s just me being picky, but freeze drying/dehydrating is actually becoming a thing again in general- my local farmers market had one freeze dried/dehydrated booth pop up in the past two years and then last time there was a couple. I think it’ll be like the people who cut out vinyl stuff for laptops and tumblers and stickers; oversaturated market.

The thing about that cereal that made me sceptical is the saying that it's a low glycemic index. You've replaced "normal sugar" with another form of sugar that ends up going into the body and becoming more glucose and fat than "normal sugar" would.
@Ray_Vun3 жыл бұрын
yup. and coincidentally i saw a video the other day by anne reardon explaining the glycemic index. and basically one can say something doesn't affect the gi because it's not sugar so your body doesn't get affected by it like it does with sugar, however the body still has to process it, which means it goes to your liver and kidney, and might end up being just as bad for your health as eating sugary cereal
