My thoughts about food preps for SHTF. Rice, Beans, Spam and Canned Chili are a no go for me but guess what. They are part of my preps simply because the majority of the food I like requires refrigeration and if there is no power I'm out of luck. Like many anchovies are not something I like along with sardines and mackerel but they are in my preps because they are nutrient dense and are canned. As an example Sardines in a One 3.75-ounce (oz) can of sardines provides 22.6 grams (g) of protein and 343%, 88%, 27%, and 15%, of your daily needs for B12, selenium, calcium, and iron, respectively. 2 Many populations, including older adults and pregnant people, struggle to maintain optimal levels of these nutrients. This is what you have to think of when planning for a SHTF situation. You need to consume food that will keep you healthy that requires little if any prep or cooking. In other words your preps should be centered around what you can eat while walking such as spam slices, dehydrated fruit, trail mix, items such as anchovies, sardines, mackerel, tuna because they come in single serving cans, single serve veggie and fruit pouches, beef jerky and other such items. You also need hard candy such as Lifesavers or Altoids. In a SHTF situation being stationary and building a fire to cook a meal can be dangerous. While I have things like rice and beans which BTW I do not normally eat but for those instances when it would be ok to sit and cook a meal I would pull out the rice and beans but most of my preps are centered on being able to eat while on the move. That is jut my thinking. Thoughts or suggestions food wise as to what I could add to my preps.

Here is an old pioneer trick for cooking beans with less fuel. The women would soak the beans in a pot with water over night and bring them to a boil in the morning before the wagons would roll out. The pot would be pot into an insulated box, in those days usually insulated with a thick cover of straw to retain the heat. The beans would be cooked by the time the day's journey was done, sort of like a modern crock pot. It would be fairly simple to build and insulate a wooden box with foam board of other modern insulating materials.

If you are traveling, you can also place the beans into a Mason jar or other sealed container to soak in water the night before, and by the time you reach your place the next evening, all you should have to do is rinse and cook them. Actually, rice can also be softened in a similar way, and you do not have to soak it as long. As for milk, the shelf stable boxes have a couple of drawbacks besides not being able to be used all at once. They can easily be punctured, and also they take up valuable space in your storage area. Although it can taste a little bit off, it’s better to go with the dry or condensed milk, they have a longer shelf life, and used in cooking, you don’t have much of a taste difference.

Cook your dry beans now, rinse them, and then dehydrate them. When they are cool, put them in a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber and seal. Takes less water and less time to rehydrate them, 20 max vs 2 hours. If you pulse them once or twice in the food processor before putting them in the mylar you will have refried beans which will hydrate even faster.

Thought I would add this from the FDA to explain the dates and what the mean: Examples of commonly used phrases: A "Best if Used By/Before" date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date. A "Sell-By" date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. It is not a safety date. A “Use-By" date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. It is not a safety date except for when used on infant formula as described below. A “Freeze-By” date indicates when a product should be frozen to maintain peak quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.

Well, I do have a hand grinder that I got years ago. I’ve been told beans get too hard to cook over time, but I figure they can be ground into bean flour. You can buy bean flour so I figure I should be able to grind my own if need be. Besides, I see dried beans and/or wheat berries also as a garden seed if nothing else. I’ve not grown wheat but I’m sure someone does and has the space for it, so they could have wheat berries stored up. I do know how to grow beans, though, having been reared by a farming dad, I also know to let some also get fully dried on the plant to continue the seed saving process.

My time in the military taught me one thing when it came to food. It doesn't matter if you like it or not or have some reservations against it because when it comes down to your survival you will eat the very things you would not eat normally if you intend to survive. That is just fact.
@KarenYork-t2c2 ай бұрын
I do not buy what I normally won’t eat. However I have had others give me what they won’t eat and I normally wouldn’t either, but I still accept them for few reasons. First you don’t know what you might eat if your truly starving. Plus there’s obviously someone out there who will eat it so bartering comes to mind. But a final reason would be for my chickens. If I can’t get feed, they will become free ranged and old food items or what I don’t like becomes feed for them.

I recommend vacuum sealing in glass jars for long term storage (i.e. years) since rodents and insects can't chew through the glass and air can't permeate. When empty, the jars are reusable. Downside is they take up a lot of room. Vacuum storage bags don't take as much room, but will eventually allow air to permeate and vermin can easily chew through the plastic. Bags MAY be reusable, but generally they are designed for single use only. Depending upon what is being packaged and the length of time planned for storage, one may be better for your situation.
@danielrodding85223 ай бұрын
Best thing to do is to repack foods immediately which require repackaging for long term storage. Remember to write official "best-before" date somwhere on the packages wherein you fill them. This helps when practicing "first in, first out" in your pantry.

I've been thinking about what food to store cans I realized something. If the emergency you're prepping for doesn't happen before the food's best by date and you can't give it away then you're going to have to eat it. So don't buy something you don't like just because it's on sale.
@melmelbry57543 ай бұрын
I was just going to use those things to trade my neighbors. And I might like it later because my taste buds would like anything at that point.

Your final reason, I disagree, I would keep some of these less desirable items if I already have them or can get them on sale, in case someone comes by asking for help. You can at least give them items you don't like.

Lentils.. cook fast!
@melmelbry57543 ай бұрын
Exactly!! I have way more lentils than black beans. They take to long! Ain't nobody got time for that. If I'm chopping wood, hunting, gardening, etc... I'm not trying to wait so long when I'm starving. Given that we probably won't have a fridge. We have to cook and eat each meal. Augh. So exhausting sounding.

@@jenniemiller8742 yes. I would store all foods in glass jars. I have friends whose supplies were destroyed by rats,squirrels,etc- ate right through thick plastic buckets and bins. If they are sneaking in through the back of your storage, it might be a while before you notice the holes in the buckets. Either way, you can't eat whatever food since it's contaminated by dirty rodent feet and spit.So important to properly store asap from insects,rodents and moisture.

I will eat anything I’m served except sardines, shell fish and seafood in general. My reasoning I hate sardines , can’t stand to look at them and my stomach churns. #2 I have a shell fish, saltwater iodine intolerance./ allergy, clams, shrimp, lobster. I can eat fish like tuna , salmon, mackerel, cod but only in small amounts. Everything else is ok by me. I do have a weariness of chitterlings depending on who’s preparing and methods used. Cows tongue is the same, how it’s prepared. Otherwise I would eat both. And YES, Cannibalism is out of the question.

I always try to find low sodium versions of foods, and low sugars. Personally, if SHTF happens, I would rather eat something vs. going hungry. So, if it taste okay, and I can work it into meals and season, I will keep it on the shelf, and if its able to be freeze dried as it nears or is a little past the BEST BY: date, I will freeze dry it and package it accordingly. But, best buy dates don't mean a whole lot these days with today's canning methods for most foods, not all.

I used to have the same dislikes; however, my mother used to say if I didn't like a particular food it was because it hadn't been prepared to my taste. I have found that to be true with liver and spinach, both of which I now occasionally crave. Odd, isn't it? I think our taste buds change with age, too, so things we abhorred when younger may become more palatable as we get older.

Can soak beans in sea water if living on a boat ? Sea water is salty water ?
@chickchoc13 күн бұрын
There are lots more minerals and creatures in sea water than simply sodium. Be careful about soaking since there may be contaminant or biologics you don't want. Boiled sea water (to sterilize) might be OK, though.
