Chelsea's Journey with Chiari Malformation & Syringomyelia

Chelsea is a 3-year-old Brussels Griffon who presented to SEVN due to a head tilt, episodic shaking, and phantom scratching. An MRI and cerebrospinal fluid analysis were performed and she was diagnosed with Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia.
Chiari-like malformation (CM) is an inherited condition in which an abnormal growth of bone in the back of the skull compresses the brain and disrupts the flow of cerebral spinal fluid.
SEVN’s Dr. DePompa surgically removed the malformed bone to relieve pressure and allow cerebrospinal fluid to flow out of the brain. Chelsea has improved tremendously after treatment and is back to enjoying life along with her sister, Brooklyn.

I adopted a mini rescue cavapoo who was born without a tail so I was imformed that her anal glands needed doing every 8 weeks. They never mentioned that dogs without tails can have malformed spines. Once I brought her home she settled in well but after 2 weeks she starting hunching up and crying loudly. I persuaded the vets to do some xrays and that's when we saw her mangled vertebre. They also concluded after I'd shown them videos of her, that more than likely she had syringomyelia. They can't operate on her so she takes nerve block pain tablets twice a day. She is so much better than when I first got her but does still hop skip and hunch up after her anal glands are done. The vets don't want to risk removing them due to her damaged nerves in her lower spine/ rear area. I recognise when she is having these episodes so have no issue with carrying her about when she is struggling. She is such a happy little fluff despite all her horrible medical issues. Her vet bills are big, along with her meds but she is worth it to me😊
