🐶Welcome to our latest video on the treatment of Canine Chiari malformation and syringomyelia, featuring the launch of the 2024 treatment algorithm! 🐾 My aim is to provide clear and easy-to-follow guidance on managing this condition in dogs. 📹 I've been producing the treatment algorithm since 2006, and this is the first year that I am supporting it with videos.

Thank you so much for your videos. My Siggy, is the st Cav I have had and it was frightening the day he started screaming in pain and had to be rushed to ER. The thought he had a slipped disk but late a neurologist conformed he through an MRI he does have CM and SM. It's been a battle with meds and other issues making us shift meds around. He was on Gabapentin but he no longer is and he was on 5mg Prednisone but that was reduced to 1 MG. So very small dosage. We tried getting him off of that because he was getting so bloated but the fantom ear scratching thing got bad so we are getting him back in the 1 MG a 1x a day for a week then every other day. he also takes 5 MG Omeprazole. It's rough knowing he may be in pain and if we are doing enough. I never want to hear that screaming in pain again. That was such a heartbreaking and frightening thing. This condition makes us feel pretty helpless. You videos at least help us feel a better informed on our options.

Love these videos. Is there any research to suggest vitamin and mineral supplementation alongside prescription drugs to be helpful in reducing pain?

No strong evidence for mineral and vitamin supplement - this was recently reviewed in human medicine (neuropathic pain) here DOI: 10.1111/papr.13291 and the conclusion was " Based on the review, we cannot recommend any supplement (for chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy)....although further research into N-acetyl-cysteine, l-carnosine, crocin, and magnesium is warranted....... Studies with goshajinkigan, vitamin B12, vitamin E, and glutamine had conflicting results regarding efficacy, with one goshajinkigan study finding it harmful. Guilongtonluofang, ninjin'yoeito, and antioxidants showed various degrees of potential effectiveness. Regarding diabetic peripheral neuropathy our review supports the use of alpha-lipoic acid, acetyl-l-carnitine, and vitamin D.... Not to sure of the context here - i.e. whether you should think that I should never mention PEA or that you think that PEA should have been mentioned more! However for the record, PEA was mentioned briefly, at least in the slides, and those interested were referred to an entire dedicated video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4K0e62eiZ2srrssi=WZDwNlzF5ipOxzAT which discussed pros, cons and the available scientific evidence. As there is not YET any evidence of effectiveness of PEA for neuropathic pain in dogs or cats and it is an expensive supplement which in some forms does not even get into the animal's body then it cannot be in a treatment algorithm because this has to be based on best available evidence - especially when this disease causes such a welfare problem.
