We use em in CERT search & rescue drills to mark passageways and exits. Also colors can indicate various types of hazards.

I found a couple recently that expired in 2013. I tested one and it fired right up, stayed lit for 12 hours. Shelf life on the package says 4 year shelf life, which makes it over 10 years old.

Great idea! I have glow sticks for signaling at night. Tie one on the end of a string and swing it around in a wide circle. You'd be amazed what that looks like at night across a big lake.

Glow sticks really are underappreciated. No danger of fire, completely waterproof and they even float in water - what's not to love! I may be biased though, I grew up using these because my parents knew if they gave me a flashlight as a kid I'd go through batteries playing with it.

chemlights certainly have their place. i have a few of the "grownup" version, but i also buy the big bags sold in fallapart as kids toys. cheap as could be, and can be used for all kinds of things. just a couple weeks ago i tied a few on to the back of a friends boat trailer when his trailer lights would just not work and he had to get to the house.

As a scoutmaster it was fairly important to be ready to go and check on a scout at night or to mark my tent at night so I could be found so I hung an activated chemlight out side my tent and another ready to use in my tent pocket.

I have normal Chem lights, however I have found the bendable type chem light bracelets and similar used by kids at Halloween can have a use too such as marking tent pegs or marking the kids backpacks and the kids ( so I know where the kids are) when travelling in the dark and they are cheap.

@nobodynoone2500

The green are typically the brightest and longest lasting, red are good for marking but are often the weakest. There are even IR ones for spooky activities in the dark. Also note the differences between the camo packaged milspec/nato "chemlight" and the civ "snaplight". There are also many different formulations, from short but bright 5-50min ones to 24hour+. Keeping them dark, cool, and with minimal variation in temperature keeps the good longest. We never used those sleeve things, tape worked fine.

If you put glow sticks in hot water they glow way brighter. I put a reusable clear plastic bottle in my bag, if you heat the water till a near boil then drop 2 or 3 of these in the bottle its super bright. I always have these on hand including the small 3 inch and 1 inch kind.

Chem lights do the job, but if you can invest the money Lazerbrite powered glow sticks are top notch. You can turn them off, and will get days of use from one set of batteries. That’s what I upgraded to in all my packs and prep kits.

Glow sticks are also waterproof so they are nice to use in the rain. The one thing you might have to worry about is that the light comes from a chemical reaction, so if you are in South Dakota in the winter and they have been sitting in your truck all night, the glow sticks will only produce a very small amount of light (if they produce any at all).

Pondering the usefulness of these for identifying friendlies in a hectic situation. Stick a glowy boy to your backpack or back of your rig and you have an easy way of identifying your buddy from distances where making an instant ID might be sketchy, but the glowsticks are dim enough not to give away your position. I understand there's an issue here in whatever makes you more visible to your buds makes you more visible to the baddies, so this wouldn't work in a situation where you needed to be absolute sneeki breeki or at nighttime - daylight situations where given line of sight, you can see them and they can see you and you can spot each other whether or not they tucked a glowie into their MOLLE. Blue on blue casualties is something that will always happen in combat - it happens with soldiers who are well-trained, have identifiable uniforms and control measures. If ever something really bad happened that necessitated civilians take action to defend their land or families, you'd have armed civilians, many lacking formal training, who have never been in such a situation before. People are nervous, jumpy. That makes friendly fire go from a significant concern to a seriously significant one. A visible indicator, even if a tad bit too visible, may be called for here. The glowie could provide an instant, clearly visible indicator that your eye is immediately drawn to if you and your bud stumble into each other in the woods during a defensive action. And, again, I don't think deploying these in that manner at dawn or dusk while you're moving openly would let a baddie see you that would have otherwise missed you, if ever, but flagging yourself to the bad boi is a concern and I'm not sure if it's a bigger worry than I'm giving it credit for. Any thoughts? Good idea? Or is it akin to strapping a flashing LED onto their helmet while blowing a whistle and shouting to the bad guys that you're there?

I keep 50 or so cyalume sticks in my go bag and some around the house for power outages. You might want to check them out. I think they work out to be a buck or so a piece. Cyalume is officially issued to the military and have a shelf life of over 3 years outside of the foil wrapper. But theoretically should last forever. Even if it they dont light up as much or for as long. Also, overdue ones can be put in the freezer for a couple hours before snapped and i found they light up better. But do this with it in the foil and unsnapped. Great video!

People ask me a lot why I became a wildlands firefighter and I say to them, 'Because I'm no longer afraid of going to Hell and I want to survive the end of human society and civilization with my trusty dog, Copper.' Those chemlights really do work like a charm. I always pack a few of them with me when I go out. I find them highly convenient along with flashlights.
