Like I tried watching this video 5 times and I always fall asleep cause at some point I get confused but following in my textbook while watching kept me awake and now I have finally watched the entire video. The fact that I have actually done the experiments already brought back some prior knowledge that I couldn't explain, now everything makes sense. I still can't believe I went through and understand this in the space of 2hrs. Exams are like 3 weeks away and by this rate this channel will get me ready by then. Thank you.

Does the water have to be in gaseous state? Also, does the double bond from the alkene break by heterolytic fission? Thanks!
@chemistrytutor Жыл бұрын
For the hydration of alkenes? Yes water is a gas. And yes the pi bond of the double bond breaks and both electrons in the bond go to one carbon and it immediately uses them to bond to one of the H atoms in the phosphoric acid

Sir, for the hydroxy example (5:57) would it be necessary to add the 2? since Aldehydes are always on position 1. Because I wrote: (2)-hydroxyethanal and then changed it to Hydroxyethanal because I believed it was unnecessary. Thanks!
@chemistrytutor Жыл бұрын
Yes indeed, you're correct. The 2 is not crucial for ethanal. That's why most mark schemes would show the (2-) in brackets as you've done in your comment. If it was essential, it would be 2-hydroxypropanal

Isn’t the combustion reaction C2H5OH + 302 -> 2CO2 + 3H2O So it’s not carbon neutral
@chemistrytutor8 ай бұрын
You can't determine carbon neutrality from one equation it's the balance of carbon into the plant, for instance, vs carbon out when you burn it. Photosynthesis, 6 CO2 in... 6CO2 + 6H2O --> C6H12O6 + 6O2 Fermentation, 2 CO2 out... C6H12O6 --> 2CO2 + 2C2H5OH Then combustion, 4 more CO2 out... 2 C2H5OH + 6O2 --> 4CO2 + 6H2O The 2nd and 3rd Equations add together and simplify to the precise opposite of the first
