Very fine. This man appears to let his "opponents" resist or push as they please. He doesn't depend on setting them up in already compromised positions or in working with students who look like they're deferring to him in any way. The video could be deceiving, of course, but it appears, on its face, to be quite real and the methods he's showing realistic in their effects against apparently real challenges. Much better than the run of the mill pushing hands demonstrations seen so often on KZbin or martial arts demos on KZbin in general.

+Stuart Mirsky I did not knew this man, and a few days ago I met a german student who learn tai chi with a disciple of Chen ZhongHua in Berlin. I made me experiment his tui shou (I cannot be considered as a regular student at all, but I am not a complete beginner about tai chi and qi gong), and the little I experimented was very realistic, a very simple but with an intelligence of the corporal structure, that convinced me. Moreover, he showed me a way to practice the tree posture, very strong, with deep roots in the legs, and for me it's the result, the energy and strength it makes me feel, that talks more than every demonstration.

Are there any long term training programs available? For example, if one had the time and money is it possible to train taijiquan in the traditional way under the instruction of a qualified master? I understand this takes many years. Are there any such programs available, either in the united states, china, taiwan, malaysia, etc?

LOL! Nothing to do with Taijiquan. This is Chen Jia Gou Pao Chui Shuai Jiao - and badly done at that. It is a fact that Taijiquan as a fighting / healing art never even came into existence until Yang Lu-chan. Chen style is NOT a true Neijia - it comes from Shaolin Red Fist. Historical fact - Wu Tu Nan's Interview With Chen Xin And His Meeting With Chen Fa Ke - With this background information, Wu Tu Nan had asked Chen Fa Ke during a meeting around 1950 whether his art was Taijiquan, given that the definition of Taijiquan was that is was based on the 13 postures. Chen Fa Ke had replied that his art was not based on the 13 postures and so was not Taijiquan. The meeting was cordial and it was not confrontational - historical FACT.
@Whiskey_Tengu4 жыл бұрын
While I'm not disagreeing with the assertion that Chen Style is not true neija, I would be careful with that interview quote as "fact". As a long time Wu Style practitioner, that story differs depending on who tells it and how it will serve their interests. I remain neutral in the great debate because it never truly makes my Taiji any better either way, however, for the sake of discussion I can offer the many things I've come across, and what sounds plausible. The most likely answer out of every story I've heard, including yours, was that the response was this: "I only claim to practice what my grandfather taught me." That sounds more like something a Master and lineage holder would actually say. What may have been documented by others, I'm skeptical at believing given the vast history of China controlling narratives that serve a best interest somehow. Now, translation...exactly what you said. Though it didn't come directly out of his mouth like that, it was Wu Tu Nan filling in the gaps in the absence of context behind what he truly meant. The story through the Wu Family in the Hong Kong side, is that there was a Chen Family member (Chen Wangting) who learned the 13 postures from outside the family; a noodle vendor is a common story I hear most. Chen was impressed that despite being proficient in his family's Pao Chui, this man's soft style negated any of his attempts to strike or apply qinna. He asked to be his student, but the man said that he was on his way to his mother's funeral. And that upon his return, if he found him here at the same time and place, he would teach him. Apparently, due to all the politics surrounding tradition back in that era of China (still lingering even today), there was a lot of saving face going on and not all members of the family were taken with learning something from outside the family. Some family members learned it, many others chose to be purists. It's for this reason that Yang Lu Chan was likely able to learn the art and achieve such a high level of mastery as an outsider of the family. Think about it, the family would have been more pissed if he was learning every aspect of their Pao Chui, rather than this soft hand style from some noodle vendor that the inner family abhorred. However, as years go by and Tai Chi makes a splash in the public's eye, being opportunistic had its advantages when Chen Family village could take credit for being the birthplace of Taijiquan since Yang Lu Chan learned in their village...even if that is not what they were actually training in and promoting. That doesnt mean what they do isnt effective...just means there's a reason why each look so foreign to each other in comparison with only mild similarities here and there.

@@Whiskey_Tengu I already know all this and a considerable amount more. It seems that your knowledge is still quite limited and of the mainstream understanding perhaps. Not only do I know about Jiang-fa but practice & teach his system & YLC's full System, I have also studied Chen style in depth. Yang Lu-chan learnt both the ORIGINAL Chen Pao Chui system & Jiang-fa's true Neijia system from Zhang Sanfeng. Then created his own Neijia system from these two, which is why his Form is So similar to Chen Form BUT his techniques & PRINCIPLES are the same as Jiang-fa's. Video shows nothing more than Chen Pao Chui style Shaijiao. Again, the term/name Taijiquan was NEVER used by the Chen family until AFTER YLC was dead & buried.

@@Whiskey_Tengu that is one of the best reasons I've heard, a very balanced point of view without pushing a particular style agenda. Thank you for your insights. My old Taiji teacher in London in the 80s and 90s always kept away from what he referred to as "Taiji politics", something that was often described at the time in the general Taiji community as "style wars". I witnessed the same when Kung Fu arrived in London, as prior to that the only martial arts you could find easily were: Judo, Karate, Boxing, Wrestling, Fencing etc. I think we can all learn from each other, but also maybe it's best we all focus on which method, style, teacher, school suits us best. After all, we all have slightly different needs as students of a particular system. I have made the mistake myself of judging or criticising another system, because I tend to look at from my point of view, my own Taiji lens based on my experience and knowledge only. That said, we should all be careful about what our ultimate aim is in studying these arts, and be honest about why do we want to learn it. Is it for health or self-defense or relaxation and stress management etc. We might want to consider experiencing and learning a bit of everything that it has to offer, but ultimately trying to taste all the fruits on the table might make us sick! A good teacher should be able to help a student develop in the way that best suits their needs as a student and person. Not all of us have the same physical, mental and emotional condition to be able to take on everything that a teacher might be able to offer. We can start with basics and stay working on the basic principles for at least 10 years, before progressing to other aspects like applications and more energy based work. Not everyone has the patience for such dedication, but that doesn't mean they won't get anything out of it. It's just that the more you practise, the more often you practise and the more you work with good teachers and other students then you should develop the skills, knowledge and experience more consistently over time. I have made many mistakes on my own path of learning Taiji, and will probably continue to do so. However, with regular daily practice I notice how things are transforming within me slowly. Some days are better than others, but that's what it's about. I'm in no rush to reach any particular goal, I'm just working on myself through Taiji practice and I believe it to be of benefit to me in many ways. But just like anyone else, I have my own ego to deal with and so there are many dragons on the path. Taiji gives me the strength and courage to face those challenges. Each teacher teaches what they believe is the best system and so their students will naturally think and feel the same. There is little or no point in trying to say another system is better. Obviously, other systems will be different in many aspects, but they will also share many things in common too.

This infighting between Taijiquan practitioners regarding what is 'real' Taijiquan is really tiresome. I don't think there is any 1 'real' and definitive version of Taijiquan now or in history; it has always been something that has been evolving with every generation/teacher. Even with Yang Luchan his practice would have changed and evolved pretty drastically within his lifetime. What is undeniable is that he was taught his skills by Chen Changxing, and the Yang long form structure/movements can clearly be traced to the Chen old frame yilu. I don't really buy the theory by some Yang stylists that Chen Changxing taught something drastically different from the rest of the village nor do I buy the assertion by Chen stylists that their form/system has remained unchanged for generations. What Chen Changxing taught Yang Lu Chan is lost to history but we are no doubt left with its legacy. Taijiquan is a broad idea encapsulated by the 'classics' (although I doubt the authenticity of the salt shop finds, a bit too convenient and timely) and practitioners should take from it what we can. For me I choose to adopt the Chen style forms and applications but with mostly Yang internal engine as an approximation of what Yang Luchan may have practiced as his basis, and despite what a lot of people will say, I find no conflict in doing that.

@@Zz7722zZYes, the YLC form does indeed follow the *basic* form structure of Chen Yilu . . . however, the techniques & principals it uses are *very* different & not those of Chen. The YLC form uses all the techniques & principals he learnt from Jiang-Fa who was the descendant of Zhang Sanfeng. If you don't know the original Zhang Sanfeng/Jiang Fa system, then you will not know this. Many/most of the techniques in YLC form/system are identical to those in the Sanfeng system & completely different to those in Chen. Also, the YLC system has *many* more training drills etc than does the Chen System & they are also *very* similar to the ones in the Sanfeng system.
