WOW! What a show, thanks for the legwork covering that massive Chengdu show. The choice is just mesmerising & the high standard of brands there is mind-blowing. Chinese automakers have really taken the BEV world by storm with their technology, software & design. Legacy auto should be really worried & I very much doubt we'll see them as they are today by the end of the decade. Great show & thanks for showing us around.

If I was a local citizen I think I would have choice embarrassment. So many brands... The quality is seriously going up year after year, specs and design. They are working hard & it's clear. I see that they are embracing the flashy/ quirky colors too (everyone seems to be fed up with white, grey and black). We are in a worldwide recession & that means people are either looking for bargains or if they treat themselves they want all the things in their car. I almost feel bad for 🇩🇪 legacy auto (but they were warned years ago & frankly, their offering is underwhelming & dated). Thanks for covering the event for us 🇪🇺 .

To be honest, German legacy auto makers are way better already, comparing to the Americans and the Japanese. Germans are not in denial, and they have been actively trying to deepen the collaboration with Chinese EV companies and battery manufacturers. The tariff imposed by EU is not their idea and they have always been against it. (Sure the decision was announced by Ursula van derlein (forgot how to spell her last name but really don’t care) who is German but she works for American interests). Americans and Japanese though,are still in denial. If there will be any legacy auto makers that is able to survive, I think it will be Germans.

There is no need for feeling bad for german brands. Its a myth that chinese cars are better. They dont have faster charging speed no longer ranger often very bad software very bad driving assistant and often bad efficiency. Yeah they scale very good and fast but they dont have better electric motors or inverters or battery management systems. Most of the good chinese brands are also been supplied by german tier 1 suppliers.
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto 7 күн бұрын
@@oxidalpha6350 That's interesting, because literally any Chinese car, even BYD, has clearly better software than any Mercedes, the Zeekr 007 charges 10-80% in 10.5 minutes (I challenge any European car to equal that), range is the same, and their ADAS generally kicks lumps out of the European stuff that has no concept of how to drive on Chinese roads, oh and haven't Mercedes' EQs been catching fire all over the place? So much for their better battery management systems.
@oxidalpha6350

@@InsideChinaAuto every chinese car in germany has very bad software. Byd are really bad at this point for sone reason. They fire catched benz you can read online that it wasnt mercedes fault. Yeah there are some fast charging chinese cars also xpeng g9 for example but with bad efficieny. And no byd has not better software than mercedes. We see in germany that none of the chinese cars reach their given range. The german cars always the closest to the given numbers.

Great effort Mark, much appreciated. My worry is if even half of those come to the UK people will be so overwhelmed they may just stick to what they know. Although on the other hand the non-Chinese car makers much be bricking it as like it or not the good times are over for all of them. I've followed the motor industry for years and know just how much they have been ripping us off so I don't have much sympathy. And I don't think people in the west know the impact it will be to them given the impact on many of these brands that have been around for decades. Looking forward to your new website. As you asked what I'd like to see, well a reference to every Chinese make and model, but appreciate this would be a monumental task so probably not viable. Also looking forward to your podcast. I'd love to hear your thoughts on why Chinese brands keep bringing out new sub-brands before they've established their current ones and often appear to compete with each other. Seems crazy.
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto 16 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment Jason. Chinese car integration into Western culture will take some time for sure, many of these cars have features for things we don't really do in Europe, or at least not in the same way, but it'll shift over time I think. Will definitely look at that feature for the website. I've been looking at something like that and it is a lot of work but once you've got the base in place it should be a bit simpler after that. For the podcast, I'm sure we'll cover a lot of content over time so appreciate the ideas and will see what we can get in. It's a new thing for us so it should improve over time as we get into it.

Thanks! Watched it in full. (half of it while doing workout). So many brands and models(cars and humans..) . It is almost impossible to keep track. But one takeaway. Many complains about why BMW, Audi and other puts big grills on EV when not needed. Looking at the show i realize why it is needed. How many large sedans called something with 7 did you present in this video? I lost track of it. If you took all of them, removed the badges and then asked people to name them correctly it would almost be an impossible task. So difficult for the new brands to find their identity when everything looks the same. Thanks again. Looking forward to the next video on the channel.

I think it's just bad advertising. State owned brands are not great at marketing generally. They're good looking cars, decent systems, but also thinking about it, they're rarely in shopping centres where many of the other brands sell, so if they're not in people's faces, people don't know about them.

Firstly mate...well done and thank you so much for this. We'd all the be lost without you- especially us Aussies. In a rare situation (by having no local car manufacturing to speak off) we are somehow in the firing line for a lot of the stuff coming out of China and this video is a great way to get an overview of where things are heading. The lack interest in legacy brands is definitely a snowball effect we will see here. Question for you - from everything you are seeing- it looks like most of these manufacturers have abandoned physical controls for majority of the functions- we're looking at a very screen heavy future?

Remarkable review. You basically reach the score for an Olympic gold medal. Aside this, many cars are alike from an outside view; the interior are simple and seems out of feeling. But their technology is surely a step ahead of European manufacturers. Leapmotors on the easy cheap access; Neo/Li Auto and of course BYD for high value. Zeekr on the premium? My preference seems to go to the Dena. Which one can compete with a Range Rover Sport? Aside these comments. Many thanks for your excellent review of this other show

I left china 25 years ago. Though doing well career-wise in the states, I still have that underdog mentality. I never thought china would develop this fast and go this far. Cell phone 10 years ago. Now EV. What's next? Commercial jets? I used to hold strong opinions against chinese government. Now I changed my mind with reservations, I mean, there're places they can improve, but compared to us politicians/system ... Gosh, what a mess down here in the states.
@InsideChinaAuto

I think it's exactly that. No government is perfect, I doubt any country is, but if your government is lifting the country steadily, consistently, creating valuable tools for the people to use now or in the future (high-speed rail, subways out into the sticks as two examples), then they're doing something right. If the people are satisfied enough with your wins to tolerate your losses, you can make do without direct choice in favour of having consistent governance that thinks long term and generally puts the needs of the country first.

@@stjiko It's hard to say what the reputation is because I so rarely see Hyptec cars on the road. It was one of my most memorable cars of the year, a very different driving experience, so I'm hoping the HT is similar, albeit quite a different proposition.

@@InsideChinaAuto thanks so much for your input! Lastly, I want to get your perspective in Chinese EVs for the long term. Second hand value is not quite predictable as of now, however what do you think about their build quality? Are they built to last? It has never been a worry on durability on ICE vehicles, as they’ve been around since forever. Thank you 🙏🏼
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto 16 күн бұрын
@stjiko Well the good thing about EVs is that there are less mechanical parts to go wrong, so they should be durable enough. Some brands are better than others in terms of inspiring confidence in the interior standards, but inevitably these brands all want to go abroad, they want to be successful, so it's not in their best interests to be any less durable than their competition because a bad reputation sticks and you don't get trust back easily. Personally I find them all generally as well built as any other foreign car I've ever driven and better in some cases. I always prod and poke the dash, doors, rooflining, centre console, etc, to see if they flex, and test the wiggle of any physical buttons, and I point that out when I find bits that don't satisfy me, but most of these brands are now hiring experts who worked at legacy brands, or they had joint ventures building legacy brands, so they know what they need to do. I mean resale value of EVs is going to suck in these early years because they're just advancing so fast, early adopters will get stung for helping move the cause along, but eventually we'll start to level off, the advances won't be so big each year, and most likely we'll get the most homogenous group of cars ever, all nearly as good as each other, similar styles and proportions dictated by aerodynamics, similar specs, with only really material choices and vehicle dynamics to give a car a more premium feel or sense of character.

Absolutely. I am interested in comparing the after-sales activities in China with those globally. On the global owners' forum, most users report an average wait time of 3 to 4 weeks for parts replacement due to accidents. Since many of these costs are covered by insurance, the prices are rarely discussed. As you mentioned, the government plays a significant role, and there are growing concerns that the pricing of spare parts will be strictly regulated, leaving car owners with no choice but to accept whatever set price. In contrast, legacy manufacturers must navigate market prices along with the availability of Chinese OEM parts. Perhaps you could create videos exploring this aspect of owning Chinese brand vehicles.

The sheer amount of choice that China has is amazing and I'm not surprised that they're shunning the expensive & dated Western brands. I do wonder how many of these brands will exist in 20 years though, maybe the bigger companies will start purchasing smaller brands just to kill them off for extra market share and maybe the West will start buying into some of these companies in order to survive. When you bump into a Chinese person while you’re walking around the show, do you think they know what you meant when you said “sorry”?
@InsideChinaAuto

I think some words are more recognised than others and sorry would be one of them, but more than that I think they can pick up on the tone. I never clattered anyone, just needed to squeeze through gaps.

I know that the Ioniq 5N is already available for pre-order and will be available soon. Europeans also have months to wait. But it's surprising that there are no people in the Ioniq 5N. How good are the Chinese electric cars? It's very interesting.

When we talk about Ev in China,there's either Chinese brands or Tesla. Ev made by legacy automakers just suck. The ioniq 5n might be a decent sports suv, but the price here is 400k rmb. Nobody gonna pay any attention to this car

@@zachary2383 Exactly. I saw a thread recently about a Mercedes EQB. Honestly, compare that to a Chinese EV or Tesla, they're world's apart. No consumer here wants that crap, even if it was half the price, but it's not, it's double.

So now tragically+predictably all carmakers, KZbinrs and so-called journalists are conformingly refusing to talk about China's cheap-but-great small EVs - BYD's Seagull being just one example of this collective conspicuous deafening silence. China-based KZbinr Elliott Richards(ex-FullyCharged) is now almost a lone heroic voice in this regard... Paul G

Erm, I was the first a English language media to do a review on it last year. It's old news at this show so not particularly relevant to focus on, and other brands tend not to bring their small car to these shows so much unless they're a new launch, hence there's no Wuling, no Baojun, no Chery QQ Ice Cream, no Bestune Pony, and the new Geely small car hasn't debuted yet.

@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto 7 күн бұрын
Well actually they all copied the touchscreen from a Buick in the 1980s, then Mercedes stuck a screen on the dash on the A-Class, Tesla copied that but did it bigger and put more functions inside, and then nearly all electric cars since have gone for the same idea. The design is everything else around the screen and also the UX within it which is increasingly more important. You're basically saying the second TV channel copied the first by showing TV shows, and the second man copied the first by walking. Don't know if you've ever sat in a recent Mercedes EQE or EQS but their operating system is like Windows 95 compared to the modern Chinese car makers, who also have AI abilities and more inside.

nowadays, i think from what i see around me that range rover/landrover are the most popular premium legacy automakers. but if we all noted, their booth was empty! i was surprised to be honest since lets say they probably have the best exterior designs out of legacy automakers but i have a feeling this one was due to political issues between China and India. rover group is owned by Tata, an indian conglomerate. a year ago BYD was banned from investing in India due to indian government interference... the chinese will always remember, especially nowadays where they feel they are against the westernworld/japan/korea....
