This is actually a modern retelling of Emma by Jane Austen. Which probably explains why it has more depth and better story telling than the average teen movie. I hope you do 10 Things I Hate About You, which is based on The Taming of the Shrew.

In the book this is based on, the picture thing makes a lot more sense as Emma (Cher) paints a portrait of her friend. He wants to keep it because it’s one of her paintings that she put effort into. So he keeps fawning all over it, complimenting it, and they took that as him flattering the friend.

10 Things I Hate About You did a modern retelling of Shakespeare. Too bad Romeo&Juliet (1996) couldn't do the same. Part of what made that movie so terrible was that it was verbatim. Nobody speaks that way in modern times. They can modernize it by adding guns and cars and stuff but they can't change the language? Big mistake imo.

In the book version Cher and Josh would be in-law siblings bc Cher's sister married Josh's brother, but the movie makes them ex-step-siblings which I think is weirder. FBI forensic psychologists define it as separate victims, in escalating patterns, with specific indicators. One of his victims was a by product of his first kill. Wrong place, wrong time. It wasn't planned. Incidental victims don't meet the criteria.
