Clueless (1995) - Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother was right about how misguided she was -- and falls for him.

To clarify, this movie is a loose modern adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. The love interest in that book is Emma's brother in law. He is also about 20 years older than her and has known her since she was a child. So, the source material is definitely creepy by modern standards. I've always assumed that the marriage between their parents was very brief, so maybe he was her step brother for like, six months, five or more years ago. The age gap is actually more concerning to me, but I was willing to suspend my disbelief. My age would have been in the couple of years between the two characters when the movie was released and I don't remember finding it problematic. (Although I think I may have felt differently if I encountered the situation in real life).

Yeah, if I had watched it for the first time when I was older and / or didn’t know it was an adaptation of Emma, I would have been more weirded out lol. At the time, I was thinking it was a funny version of the usual age gaps / familial relations in Jane Austen (cousins, sometimes 10-20 years, etc). I don’t even know how much I would say this is a “loose” adaptation considering it has some hilarious versions of specific lines in book, amongst other things.

Random sorry but I met Alicia Silverstone when I was a server at a fine dining restaurant and she was incredibly kind. (Most customers didn’t even make eye contact coming in and she was sure to greet every host and staff member she saw) Maybe 15 mins later I was still having an internal monologue about it near the host stand and felt a tap on my shoulder and it was he. She said some words and I think asked me something but she was standing SUPER close to my face - like close enough I doubt anyone nearby could hear and my mind went blank. I remember her smiling and thanking me and she seemed to be satisfied so I hope I made sense but I was truly embarrassingly star struck for the first time.

My mother has been married 4-times. I have ex step-sisters I have never met. There is no evidence that they were ever siblings. Josh doesn't live there, he's interning with Cher's dad who has a home office.

I can see how "Josh" and "Cher" are an odd way of adapting "Knightly" and "Emma" pseudo-family ties. In Jane Austen's *Emma*, Knightly's brother is married to Emma's older sister. Another Jane Austen adaptation is "Bridget Jones's Diary", which is based on *Pride and Prejudice*.

It's not strange that they're dating because "oh they're brothers" because they're NOT BROTHERS. 😂 It's funny that they said that 4 times in the movie and you had to look it up to understand. And what's worse is that there are people who, even knowing that, still insist on this story about brothers. 😬 They must have lived in the same house for a few years. And they were old enough to understand that they weren't related by blood. They never saw each other as brothers.👍🏼 Josh even teases Cher when they're in the living room and she's combing her hair and Cher says "We're not brothers" (I think he said that just to test if she considered him a brother). And Cher says that Josh was Christian's half-brother, but I think it was to shorten the story between the two. 🤷🏽‍♀️ The only point that makes sense for some to find strange is the age difference. She's 16 and he's in college, but the difference isn't that big. Josh recently started college, he must be 18/19 years old. "Ah, but they have different levels of maturity", I agree. But I believe that Cher matures quickly, she has shown some evolution since the beginning of the film and, living with Josh, she will mature even more. But if you still wouldn't agree with a relationship like that because of the age difference... that's okay. Set your own rules for your children😊. In this story, I believe that Cher's father accepts and trusts Josh. The most important thing that Cher's father has to do (that any father should do when his minor/dependent child is dating) is to monitor the relationship. Period. Cher's father should always be updated on Josh's relationship with Cher (even though he trusts him a lot).

Yes! Amber was my favorite character from the tv show! Her character is definitely expanded but she remains a "frenemy" of the group, and she is genuinely funny! Christian is sadly not in the tv show (I wonder why...), and Travis and Tai are mostly in the background. At least the show does kind of ignore the whole Cher/Josh situation. like Cher dates other guys and Josh mostly behaves like a proper stepbrother lol

Ahhh, I sort of grew up on this movie. I think of it as a classic, and sneakily subversive. As far as Cher and Josh, they do bond and start flirting at one point. Regarding the stereotypes about gay men, this is a Hollywood film and it was the 90s. Unfortunate but that’s how it was. :/ It’s based on a Jane Austen novel, called Emma.

to be fair someone born in April can be anywhere from a day older than someone born in may to almost 2 months depending on the time of the month XD but seriously the second i saw Tai show up i had her line in my head "you're just a virgin who can't drive"

I enjoy your thoughtful reactions! There was a specific reason for the writers to do what they did with Josh and Cher, directly related to the book Emma. Not saying you have to like it, but I hope you saw some of the later comments on this video since that was your main caveat. The movie’s take on Emma is quite brilliant and hilarious, from the class issues to specific scenes and even lines. Emma is a queen bee daddy’s girl as well, and Mr. Elton I believe recites poetry to her in an uncomfortable carriage ride (here he sings Cranberries lol), and “Thai” (Harriet) likes a Mr. Martin, a farmer I believe. XD

Technically they're ex step siblings. And I am assuming their parents weren't together for that long. The age thing is strange but I'm not sure what the age of consent is in California. So, ideally, by the end when they kiss hopefully Cher is 16 and Josh is a freshman in college, possibly 18 or 19. I mean, none of the actors in the movie look like they're high schoolers, so it's hard to tell if it's not clearly stated, like for Josh. But on a separate note, Clueless is loosely based on the classic Jane Austen novel Emma. I think the movie tries to parallel themes from the book with Cher and Josh's relationship acting as a stance against traditional relationships. Back in the time of Emma traditional relationships would be entered into in order to gain or maintain social value. So, in today's world or the world of the 90s when this movie came out, in order for cher's character to really go against normative standards, it sort of makes sense that she would fall for someone who society would judge her for liking.

Since they're in high school and it's a good movie I can sort of hold off on judging the questionable age difference.........especially since I rewatched The Baby-Sitter's Club movie from '95 recently and....yeah :/ I feel like nearly anything is better than that so it's not really a fair comparison but 1995 was a wild year I guess

I always found the Cher/Josh thing weird too. I suppose the writers were trying to imply that their parents were married so short a time that feelings of familial bonds didn't have time to form? That he was more like a long-term house guest than her brother? I never really picked up on the age gap; for some reason I thought Cher was a senior, not a sophomore. Not sure if you know, this movie is a modern retelling of Jane Austin's book "Emma". If you are curious about the original story, there is a movie adaptation starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Another good modern retelling movie from this era is "10 Things I Hate About You", which is based on William Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew". If you haven't seen that one yet, I recommend it.

TBF at that time age difference wasn't really thought about. I graduated in 1990 and I had a couple friends that had boyfriends over 21 when they were sophomores. It definitely was way more popular a concept before the 80s. It was pretty "normal" for girls to date older guys.
@NoelleMar
@NoelleMar 5 ай бұрын
In the book Emma, she and Knightley knew each other for a long time and had a 20 year age gap. It seems like an obvious “adaptation” of those differences. But if you’ve just seen the movies, it would make sense if that didn’t come across, since I can’t remember it being a glaring issue in them. (For the best!)

bro the issue with former step siblings being into each other bugs you that much i hope you never watched Roseanne cause Becky & Darlene (roseanne's kids) both dated boys from the same family in highschool and Becky ran off and eloped at 17 Darlene was briefly inlaws with her boyfriend before they married & years after the original series when it came back you see Becky's husband died they never hadkids Darlene got divorced they had a couple kids these are actual blood sisters marrying blood brothers so had becky had kids they would have been double cousins with darlene's as they'd share BOTH sets of grandparents but no inbreeding

i dont rly see the issue with step siblings doing it. sure even biological family can do it, but then making off springs becomes unethical imo as there are bigger risks of defects. if they grew up together essentially as siblings it would be weird just because i could never see myself doing it, but ive heard about cultures like areas of china that had a culture of doing it with family... its weird but could be just cus im taught its weird
