Cher managed to steal the limelight at the 1986 Academy Awards by wearing this memorable Bob Mackie outfit. As a sort of "middle finger" to the Academy, Cher wore this outfit because the Academy failed to nominate her for her highly-acclaimed starring role in the 1985 hit "Mask." It worked well because the outfit is undoubtedly one of the most famous Oscar dresses of all-time.

She wore that outfit for a very specific reason. She should have won the Oscar that year for her lead role in the movie Mask. However, she wasn’t even nominated. It was a total snub. A tabloid commented on this when the nominations came out. It stated that maybe if she dressed more like a serious actress, the Academy might start to take her seriously. That’s why she made the comment she made here. Anyway, her retort was quite brilliant. She went to Bob Mackey and said “Dress me in the most over the top, outrageous, sexiest thing you can make, because I’m a serious actress. And the Academy can kiss my ass. She would not compromise who she was for anybody. And it’s one of the many reasons I love Cher, and always will. 😉

@@TheBrownIsland Mask was two years before Moonstruck. She had been previously nominated for Silkwood but at this point she hadn't won yet. She was indeed snubbed for Mask and should have been nominated.

Don Ameche (May 31, 1908 - December 6, 1993) became a major radio star in the early 1930s, which led to the offer of a movie contract from 20th Century Fox in 1935. As a handsome, debonair leading man in 40 films over the next 14 years, he was a popular star in comedies, dramas, and musicals. In the 1950s he worked on Broadway and in television, and was the host of NBC's International Showtime from 1961 to 1965. Returning to film work in his later years, Ameche enjoyed a fruitful revival of his career beginning with his role as a villain in Trading Places (1983). Fifty years after his film debut, he finally received the well-deserved Oscar. A great speech from a classy actor.

i miss the decency and standard of acceptance speeches…. NOW IT’s ALL ABOUT ACTING GHETTO, PUNCHING THE HOST, PANCAKE DISTRIBUTION OF AWARDS BASED ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, AND GETTING A STANDING OVATION FIR BEING POLITICAL oscars are no different from the national inquirer, catering to the lowest of intelligence
