Cherry blossom festival in Japan, Hanami

Please visit us at: botanyboy.org/ Each spring there is a cherry blossom celebration in Japan known as hanami, meaning “flower viewing”. This season is both beloved, and short lived - no sooner do the cherry trees come into full flower than the first petals begin to fall. Rain and wind accelerate this process, stripped trees of their blossoms in just a day or two. The effect of standing under a tree in full flower on a windy day can be startlingly magical, what the people here call sakura fubuki, a “cherry blossom blizzard.” It is at once a wonderful and saddening experience. And yet, the ephemeral nature of the flower yields its most deeply symbolic meaning - the beauty of existence juxtaposed with the mortality of life - a truly Japanese sentiment.
