An unusual turning from a piece of cherry that seems only bound for the wood stove. This is my favorite kind of turning, where I have the opportunity to leave as much of nature in the finished piece, as possible. If you enjoy this turning, please Like and Subscribe!

Phil, I watch many videos on wood turning. NO ONE turns complicated wood pieces, like you. You are an amazing artist. You can take the most impossible piece of wood, mount it on your woodworm screw, and make a beautiful piece of art, destined to the Smithsonian! Please continue making these videos. They make my day!

Phil, just found this video... it must have been one of your earlier videos. Very well done! That was a spectacular turning, quite a nail biter though, I thought for sure that side piece was going to come off. It was nice to see that you haven't changed the way you approach the aspect of the nature in the piece, mother nature provides the beauty, you make it show. You did a great job of it then, and maybe even better now. Love your work, and your videos.!! MERRY CHRISTMAS Glenn

Well Phil i thought I had a favorite and then you created this 1 . Your pieces are works of art. I don't think of them as functional. Maybe thats because 2 of my favorite things to do are watercolor and acrylic painting and arranging my houseplant collection to please the eye. You truly are a great artist. I think it's a great feeling when someone wants to run there hand over your creations. I get that with my acrylic paintings or my textured oil paintings. You just want to touch them. But your pieces being a living thing I'm sure give off wonderful vibes❣Lovely - Gorgeous piece

Another WONDERFUL piece Phil' I find great delight in seeing how you get SO absorbed into the piece of wood on your table & how your skill allows you to 'work your way into the piece of wood' as it were. It is as though you become a part of the wood you are about to turn & RELEASE the beauty of nature within. It is enthralling. Fantastic turning my friend as we have all come to expect from such a wonderfully skilled Artist/Craftsman that you are. I am sure every piece of wood that finishes up in your hands 'would jump for joy' that it has become a 'part of you'. Also we could talk about the brilliant finish because you even 'feel' what would be the best finish for each piece. As always, your comments bring we viewers right into your workshop to become almost at one with you. Keep it up mate, you are so inspirational. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

Last evening, I was sorting the scrap pile (to-the-burn-bin vs. to-the-lathe!) and found another gem hiding amidst the dross (waxing poetic, aren't I? Must be the coffee.) You'd love this piece-- Eastern red maple that from a 14" diam. log, slice off the side of the crown crotch round which sat on the bare ground out back of the shop, so it spalted. This one is so much like several of the ones in your videos that I'm running through your channel list to find out how you did similar chunks. Thanks so much! And thank you for showing, in this vid, how the Sand O Flex works, and how you can pull out more sand paper! I'll be getting a set, for certain!

Thanks, David! I understand what you're saying, and the first couple I turned like this were indeed, scary. But after you get a few under your belt, the scary part goes away and they become enjoyable. I'm getting to where I don't even want to turn just a normal bowl or platter, though I will. The challenge of this type of turning is just too much fun! Thanks for commenting!

Very, very nice. I really enjoy that you give the piece a voice in what it becomes. Too many, too often, attempt to impose their preconceived idea of what is to be. Domination creates a product. Cooperation and accentuation creates art.

Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop I was an old school machinist in the Navy long ago. Lathes, mills, grinders, shapers, boring mills. We had it all. I loved lathe work best. I never turned wood, but did almost every kind of metal, and many different solid forms of nylon, mylar, teflon, etc. After a couple of years I started making things for fun. It’s amazing what you can do putting differing pieces of scrap together. Maybe someday I’ll get to do some woodwork on a lathe. I think that would be a blast.

I'm a newbie at this. ( Seems that so far all I've done is work on how to create catches, and I"m getting good at it, I think.) I digress. I've subscribed to dozens of wood turning channels, but I always keep coming back to this one. I love your work and I love your style. Keep posting, please. I'm so looking forward to getting beyond the "catch" phase of this endeavor, and I know that you can provide the inspiration to do just that. This particular piece is one of my favorites.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 5 жыл бұрын
Dennis, I'm sooo with you on the catches. When I first started turning seriously, I had a ton of catches. Don't worry, this too, shall pass. I think it's all about your grip and approach to the wood. Now that I'm a little more confident, I find you don't have to white knuckle the chisel and DO NOT just poke it in there. Go gentle into this good night. I haven't had what I would call a catch in probably 3 years. Take your time, stop often, visualize your cut with the lathe off, chisel on the tool rest at the point of entry. Hold the chisel there and rotate the piece by hand. Imagine the cut it will make and look for whatever obstacles are going to be coming around. You'll get it. Thank you for watching and commenting! Phil

What a nice piece Phil. Good job. I like that kind of Bowls, with natural edges and the bark on. That sander flex does a great job, I think I need to get one. Up to now, the bark always gave me a hard time to clean it....

What an amazing result ! . for me it lloks like the part of the tree, here the crown begins. Cherry trees are often refined (hope it is the right word) and this seems to be the place where the refineind branches were copulated to the stem
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Жыл бұрын
We call that grafting, Stefan. I'm no expert in that. I do believe it is from the trunk of the tree, perhaps where it might have been grafted. I do love different languages and the meanings of some terms. Here, copulated would mean something quite different, done between two consenting adults! LOL! Thank you for watching, your great comment and for the chuckle! 😊

I have a couple of similar pieces, they happen when the tree gets pruned to keep it short either for ascetic reasons or for harvesting the fruit. It causes a lot of odd branching. I have wondered how long you have been doing the videos, this one answered that. Love the result.

This is such an interesting piece. On one hand it's a great bowl. On the other hand if you tip it upside down it would make an interesting stand for a center piece with flowers or a plant stand, or an art piece stand. Does it wobble when it's upside down?
