Malaysian social media channels have been abuzz after a video of a Chery Omoda 5 went viral. In the video, the owner says she lost braking power just moments after leaving a service centre. She says that she has always complained about the brake feel of the car but her complaints fell on deaf ears. Until now.

Dude, the red tape and whatever is not the customer problem. If u want to sell something, u have to be sure as hell that those critical systems work 100% of the time. When i say critical systems, i am talking about the brakes, steering and engines. These are the 3 systems that must always work regardless of whatever other problems that happen meaning to say that if the power windows fail, the brakes must still work. Yes Toyota and Honda has issues too, but it has never ever affected the critical systems. Its always minor problems which would never have caused an accident. And thats the difference between China and Japanese cars my friends. That is why China cars can never compete with Japanese cars.

Ill be honest, I think people are just bashing Chery coz it's a China brand that is enjoying some success (just look at the amount of Omodas on the road these days!) and the skeptics were just waiting for an incident like this to pounce out. In fact, I'm fully expecting people to jump on this and comment things like "imagine if you are the lady", "You are just a Chery fan boy", "You must be sales guy / earning commission from Chery", "You are just one of the lucky ones with no problems" etc. Nevertheless, despite the expectations, I need to say a few things regarding this matter:- 1. I am a Chery Omoda 5 owner, 2 months now, and my financial advisor also have been driving hers since October 2023. We have experienced zero issues with our cars. In fact, if you ask 95% of the owners out there, most will give you a 4 out of 5 star experience for what it is worth. People have posted their cars going up and down NSE, EW Highway, up and down Genting and Camerons, so I'd say there is a fairly big sample size of owners with no issues and are absolutely thrilled with the car. 2. I don't doubt the authenticity and sincerity of the video. However, there are abundance of red flags in that video that indicates that she had not taken good care of her car. I mean, who uses their car till there is no fuel, and still run it on Sports mode on a highway?? Yes yes, there are many assumptions of what might have happened, these have nothing to do with brakes, she might have panicked and just mashed all the buttons, the indicators were faulty etc. but that's my point, everyone is judging based on the one video made by one party on a one sided commentary. If you think about it, what if she was driving absolutely recklessly, constantly hitting the throttle and brakes, causing her brakes to overheat and malfunction, would you not turn that story around and say well, she drove her way to a brake failure? I'm not saying she did, but that is a possibility no? Everyone is a victim in their own eyes, heck even a rude person who cuts queue will think there is nothing wrong with their behaviour isn't it? How about we all calm it a notch (I'm not saying not pursue written statement or truth from Chery Malaysia), pursue things the right way instead of bashing on brand and country, and then go about from there calmly? 3. Many of the hate seem to suggest that because it's a China brand, they do shoddy work hence this happened. Well, as you pointed out sir, even BMW had failures with their high standards, and for those Japanese supporters, have you forgotten the death of the Selangor man from Honda's faulty airbag deployment? Absolutely not absolving Chery from responsibilities, but as this video rightly point out, there are failure rates in EVERY manufacturing plant, even the best. The key is to see how they respond and recover from this. I'd say so far, they have performed admirably by sharing a statement and investigating the incident. Again back to the airbag incident, it took a death for them to spring into action and get things recalled, otherwise, they were silently replacing everyone airbags upon service. I know, I was one of them Honda City owners whom when I enquired with my SC on whether I need to send my car back during the recall, they said they already replaced mine during service. They didnt even inform me about it! 4. Many are just responding to rationale arguments with the link to Chery Australia's recall as if its an argument-winning statement. May I remind you that the Omoda is a CKD, locally assembled car, with its own manufacturing plant, and in partnership with Sime Darby at Kulim? If there are no reports of failures, there is absolutely no reason to assume all Omoda cars have brake issues just because a locally assembled Australian car has a recall, because they are not even assembled by the same party. That's like asking Toyota to recall all their cars assembled at every location locally, just because they are recalling cars in the US for their transmission issues. That's not how it works. 5. Finally, I just have to say this. the red tape is real, customer service difficulties are real, messages being lost are real too. People forget, that these are human beings. As a trainer for customer service, I can safely say, everyone wants 100% perfect service when they are the customer, but when they are the one servicing others, they expect customers to be understanding of their difficulties and their challenges. Moral of the story, people just want to look at themselves and what's best for them, and not tolerate and understand the struggles of others. Seek responsibility from Chery Malaysia yes, but please don't take out your frustrations or make snarky comments to the sales reps, who are there to earn a living and this is through no fault of their own that this incident happened (well except Mr. Morgan, i think he has some answering to do for being called out lol). I happened to become a friend with my sales rep and the amount of hate messages he get, it's really uncalled for. Sucks to be him ya, but imagine you are in his shoes, wouldn't you want some tolerance and understanding too? Anyway, enough rambling and I'm sure there are more than sufficient points above to be bashed at, that I expect, so yes, in the end, I just want to live in a civilised, sensible, rationale society, is that really too much to ask for?

The point is very simple - brake is a life or death situation - service centre needs to take it seriously So happened just today i had issues with new Toyo tire on my Mercedes, had to drive to the tyre shop in kl first then to shah alam got it checked and luckily enough they were very professional and solved it. But, in Malaysia we have to be angry and demand proper service if not the service centre will avoid and deny the issue.

Sorry man, having to be angry and demand proper service is exactly what is wrong with Malaysians. We have got things fixed in many cars without being angry, just saying please and thank you. Errors and faults happen, nobody wants it or does it on purpose. Tyres or brakes.

@@Vanguardkl Please go to test drive O5 car and you can feel the brake sensation, there is some differences comparing to other brand. I believe Mazda owner too experience the same, some differences.

Aus press came out in February, however we did not see chery Malaysia has any recall action if the supply chain is same. If Malaysia model omoda 5 happened to use same defects brakes, how come there's no action until Apr... That's the worry for all existing chery users... 😂

That's the thing we mentioned as well, not all Omodas were affected. That's an important note here so that people don't assume that all Omoda 5's have faulty brakes.

I believe most potential buyers would rather not become the lab rat for this car brand if their current stocks of brake part constantly got malfunction issues that will eventually cost thier life and safety. It would take years until they solve this issues and stabilized the safety & whole chain of production since they are new in Malaysia market in terms of CKD production. Even proton geely tooks years to finalised to make sure the production quality not fast food car production.

Chery had actually issued a recall in Australia to address brake issues. In Malaysia, buat derkk jer pastu dipuji apabila sudah terhantuk viral baru nak tergadah. I wouldn't want to be the lousy apologist who commends Chery for cutting their bureaucratic red tape after 7 complaints fell on deaf ears and only after the issue went viral. What happened to the proposed lemon law??

Did observed O5 but did not test drive. Still not convinced to spend my 9 years monthly loan on Chinese cars even it was so tempting……. Just let it on the Malaysia road for a year to check reviews. Now it is started to have some comments. Yes, many other brand do have problems also. Chery has to do utmost effort to ensure Chery 2.0 is possible.

Come across sales of omoda 5 in aus from March - dec23, total 5600++ sold, recalled 5901 units manufactured during 22-23, could the rate getting problem braking omoda considerately high?

If a customer's complaints keep landing on deaf ears, then what are they to do? The complainant did say that she kept pointing it out for 2 months but nothing was done. Now shit has hit the fan and everyone is scrambling.

For information only. (a) I bought a Chery car 5 months ago. It has 1st service but checks only, surprise. (b) After 2000 km, the car has some problems. I sent it to the shop, but found nothing wrong, surprise. (c) At 5000 km, I changed the engine oil to fully synthetic. The car runs very much better than before. (d) I believe in myself, not in others. I spend money on my car and do not rely on others. (e) The car is very advanced, it needs a computer to check if it has problems. (f) I do not believe in a warranty, which is only free in workmanship.

We really don’t know what is actually happen to her car braking “problem”. I think it’s best to go test drive O5 car and can feel some differences in the braking sensation. Do you realise Mazda too having different set up on their braking? Without knowing the real situation, it’s not proper to make condemnation comments. We are not from Westerns media…😂

I have a Mazda CX-5 2.5T, and besides the brakes not being able to keep up with the power, there really is not much issue. There's no problem with brake fade after hours of uphill and downhill braking, there's no irregular feel. Can you please elaborate on which Mazdas are having brake issues? Perhaps we can investigate.

@@PistonMalaysia Actually there is no problem for Mazda car braking. Just that the sensation of Mazda braking set up is different, the respond is not immediate. I’m not sure about O5 braking sensation, does it need to brake harder?

Yea exactly. So how come the service centre didn't pick up on it even though she was complaining about it for months? If it's just a simple plug and play then the service centre should have picked up on it and this entire drama would not have happened. This is terrible journalism. You put out this video just to praise Chery Malaysia for releasing a statement. You did not find out why the service center did not attend the customer's complaints despite being told numerous times about the brake issue. All you did was sit in the car and speculate and give excuses favourable to the car manufacturer. Chery should address their service center's attitude of brushing off complaints. If the woman had not made the viral video, god knows if her car problem will reach HQ. Don't give us the BS about red tape. My thumbs down on this video.

I am not sure what is point of this video. Seems like saying some thing, but actually not, and I am disappointed using someone else unfortunate predicament for this video. Those haters must be from mazda salesmen, just because Mazda already lose to other rivals, does not meant that mazda salesmen have to defend Mazda sales and bash other brands but yet no facts and never test drive and no evidence. Rear axle defect is a manufacturing decision at the factory. Robots weld. Unless you potential owners bring tear drives car, put on jack, cannot detect

U know there is a process in manufacturing known as QC? Especially for automated robots manufacturing? It can be detected if QC is done properly. Never had a car maker that comes with cases of brake failure, fuel pump failure, axle failure all within 3 months of usage. So its either the manufacturer sucks or our local assembly workers sucks hard.
