@@myakhoneither, he was joking because seeing one self as a villain can be fun. Or he could be referencing that some snobby people don't like him because he caters to noobs which is "damaging" to chess. I disagree that levy's approach damages chess, growing the game and bringing in new talent can only be a good thing, but I've heard it said.

I agree but the butt plug idea is that it's a self-contained chess computer that can be communicated with via squeezes and vibrations, so it doesn't need to transmit signals anywhere outside of the confines of Niemann's butt. A faraday cage wouldn't help with that.

The problem, as Levy states, is that we can never know. All the evidence for his cheating is not concrete, however dubious the data looks. And a prior record doesn't confirm or deny anything. Meanwhile Hans himself has no way of confirming his innocence despite his recent rise other than "chess speaks for itself", only, if he was cheating, the chess would always be in his favour so the chess proves nothing anyway. I think the game he played was suspicious, I think if he is honest he got quite lucky by studying the exact line he played very recently before the game, and I think that if he did cheat, he probably stopped as soon as he got under pressure. But, as I say, we can never know for sure unless we get a confession, because there's no way to prove his innocence here

I would say that if someone is proven to be cheating they get suspended from tournament play for at least 1 year up to 5 years depending on their age and how egregious it was. Great commentary and coverage of the case. Unbiased coverage of a case from start to finish with all the necessary details to keep an uninformed viewer up to speed. The steps taken to ensure a family friendly viewing experience was also of great quality. Furthermore, I believe the summarization between sections was a great detail to give a neat "TL;DR" section. This is of help to the people with not much time on their hands, who also wish to familiarize themselves with the contents of the video. My main critique on the structure and/or contents of the video is the slightly non-neutral backdrop. In the summarization sections of the video, it can take away from the focus on you.

absolutesly! Since cheating is not a crime and the most severe punishment is "ban", Hans has nothing to lose! Even with complete online and onboard ban/ nobody wants to play with him/, he has a story to tell. A book to write. It's a fascinating plot - i can see Netflix contracts and a trol community eager for more gastrointestinal content!

I count it as a substantial win for Hans. They couldn't prove he was cheating OTB. With reinstating his account, they took away part of his legal thereat. Why would they do it, if he didn't any chance of winning in court or at least bind a substantial amount of resources ($$$) in that litigation? I hope he enters every OTB tournament from now on with a villain cape or something. I would lean into it, if I was him. Great marketing opportunity, he doesn't even need to be the best to make a living out of this role.

Frankly? Because frivolous lawsuits can eat up substantial resources and funds and they stand to win nothing but their legal fees - which don't recoup everything actually lost by not having that money at the time - opportunity cost; having money a year ago is always worth more than having the same amount of money today. It's almost impossible to prove defamation against a public figure in the American legal system, it requires a much higher standard of evidence than literally anything else in any system on the planet, there was never any chance of him winning that defamation trial. It wasn't as if they needed to prove he cheated, *he* needed to prove that they knew he didn't cheat and were deliberately lying to hurt him, or were being completely recklessly negligent in that they had no reason to believe he was cheating. That is the actual standard for defamation in the United States. The only reason any public figure *ever* sues for defamation in US Courts is because people like you don't know this and it influences public opinion, or as a means of making someone's life hell and wield the legal system against them.

Cheating online should not influence OTB chess. The punishment would not fit the crime. They are different arenas. If someone cheats in tennis, do you ban them in chess?

Comparison to Carlsen lose of 50 pt is not correct, because for Magnus it is so much easier to lose them. History says, he sometimes loses to players 200+ points lower (for average GM it would be a normal rating), and at those cases he is subtracted more points, than an player like Niemann would lose. Even draws with those average rated GMs will bring to a negative result. E.g. if 2850 loses to a 2650 player, result in rating would be -7.6, in case of a draw -2.6. For a 2700 rated player lose/draw would result into -5.7/-0.7 rating loss only.
