For some reason, cheating allegations in professional chess are so much wilder than in any other game. A few years ago, Anna Rudolf was accused of hiding a supercomputer in her lip balm. Yep, you read that correctly; a supercomputer in a fucking lip balm. If nothing else, you gotta admire the creative thinking of the accusers, though I think they may have read too many James Bond novels.

This came across my feed by chance but I find it really interesting... for the record I don't play chess I really played it a couple of times and that was years ago. But I do watch a lot of sports and sometimes the underdog Who has absolutely no chance whatsoever sometimes pulls it out. cheating is a very harsh allegation in any sport. I would imagine chess is no different. However one thing that I'm noticing here is these are allegations and very creative ones. from an outside perspective there are two possibilities. either this guy pulled off one of the greatest upsets in chess history apparently from the way you guys are talking about it. or he did cheat but there's no evidence that he did other than speculation and accusation which don't hold water.

If Hans cheated, it was almost certainly by have someone leak Magnus' prep ahead of time so Hans could study that one line. This would explain why he weirdly said he studied such a rare line, and it would explain why Magnus dropped out - if someone on his team is leaking his prep, he wouldn't want to play more games until he can find out who is doing it.

The most compelling theory imo is that carlsen has suspected for a while that someone on his prep team has been leaking info, so he chose an obscure line & behold, niemann just happened to have studied that kind of line for their match. When he asserts that he never cheated over the board, he could still feel truthful if the cheating was during prep off the board.
@Anonymous-hm9dc2 жыл бұрын
this is bullshit by the way lol I can't believe this theory is so popular
@perspectiveotaku34382 жыл бұрын
That theory makes sense and blurs the line of cheating too
@Anonymous-hm9dc2 жыл бұрын
@@perspectiveotaku3438 yes, Magnus' seconds who have known him for 15 years decided to leak preparation to some random grandmaster in a classical event. People who don't actively play tournament chess don't realize that preparation is a two way street. You can't just leak some preparation, if you leaked some, you have to leak all of it, because his prep is also based on what his opponent's moves. and are kept in large databanks. And if you try to tell me that Magnus Carlsen, world champion, was outprepped by someone who looked at his prep that morning and he has been looking at it for years, I'd think you were delusional. (I.e Hans recieved a wildcard to be in this event; he knew about his participation for a week max. and if you try to squeeze 10 years of world championship level preparation into a week, good luck lol) This also means Magnus is a bigger piece of shit than ever before because if that's the case, he just let a 19 year old kid get harrassed on the internet for two weeks when a 5 word tweet could've stopped it if it was a prep leak. Also, Magnus' seconds have already come out on chess24 saying that theory isn't true at all ^_^ but it's plausible because that's' what you want to cling to. If you ignore all the facts, then anything can make sense.

Something to note is that Hans did not play the best moves most of the time, and played a few sub-optimal moves which could have sabotaged his gameplay. So, at the very least, he was still able to execute the win with some of his own moves.
@snickersnacker45022 жыл бұрын
This could potentially have been him throwing in his own moves on occasion to help throw off anyone who might think he's using a bot. Purposely choosing not to follow the moves on occasion just to further hide the moves that were from an AI. Or to avoid moves that would more obviously be made by an AI. That's just a potential idea though. Would still be risky throwing in his own moves either way if he was cheating. But this is all still assuming he did cheat with this line of thought. No way to say for sure until someone comes out and says it with the authority to say so.
@puzzLEGO2 жыл бұрын
@@snickersnacker4502 yes, cheaters do intentionally not pick the best move but that would involve the computer relaying all the top 10 moves to him because sometimes he plays a move which is fine but not in the realm of even the top 5 computer recommended

@@puzzLEGO Lets be honest, the scariest and most powerful cheaters would be the ones that actually have the skills to back themselves up without the cheats.... Though the idea of him having to casually sit through over ten moves worth of Morse code vibrations is hilarious.
@WolfieXp2 жыл бұрын
@@puzzLEGO The thing about chess cheaters in pro settings like this is that the person cheating is already insanely good at the game. Even if Hans were to cheat, it's safe to assume that he'd already be amazing at the game without cheats anyway, so he wouldn't need the bot to tell him the top 10 moves, since the move he'd do with his own skill is most likely already in the top 10.

Thing is, as a chess player you don't just have this secret "chess strategy I'll use tomorrow" diary or idea like chess is a perfect information game that's not really a thing. People have been talking about leaked opening preps but 1) If you wanted to leak his prep which is already weird if you had something against him or smth *you don't give it to Hans when he is playing black against magnus* 2) the more real point, you don't really have one opening in this secret folder, when you prepare for a game you look at multiple lines and sidelines on your chessbase which is basically like a large note system software for chess so if someone was to leak his prep that would be like me asking for some cheat sheet before a test and someone handing me a book. Han's interviews have been absolutely dogshit but there's no clear indication or any indication that he cheated. It's just magnus leaving the tournament which is an absolutely terrible thing to do in a round robin tournament made people think it had something to do with cheating and then chess streamers like hikaru just hopped on that bandwagon for content. Clearly magnus thinks he did cheat because he didn't come out to clear anything up for this entire time but there's simply no proof so that's just being a dick

There've been times when I played people I thought were cheating, I keep my eyes on them. Anyway, great video!

Very easy to cheat actually. You can just go to the bathroom during the match and use stockfish to your benefit. Any player above 1600 ELO with decent memory can easily reconstruct a positon on their phone after leaving the board. And then getting a full evaluation from the engine. Giving them information about who stands better and key ideas in the position. It's so easy to get away with, without raising any suspicion, as long as you don't abuse this and check for every move. Best you can do is probably just to be aware and keep your eyes on suspects, as you said.

The best theory I've seen yet is that, Hans got a hold on Magnus' prep and prepared accordingly (with engine help before the game). It fits that he cannot explain properly about his moves, which is not as easily explained by "scatterbrained" as Charlie would've thought, since at that level it's near impossible to play on intuition and not understanding your own moves. It also fits that tournament didn't detect this, because there's no "cheating" during the game. It also fits that Magnus withdrew from the tournament, since if your prep is being leaked it's going to be an uphill battle for him when all his opponents can engine prep against his prep beforehand. Not being able to trust your own team for not sabotaging you also doesn't help.

A couple of points Hikaru brought up. The picture of Hans getting scanned by the wand is after the Carlsen match. They only brought it in then, so it wasn't there when he played Magnus. I still remember when Charlie won a chess game in fucking MERE. Magnus doesn't lose often, when he does it's usually to a massive upset. That's what makes this moderately believeable he got caught off guard. It's like in a lot of games if you play vs someone reasonably lower ranked than you, it's hard to play vs them because they make odd mistakes/moves or unforced errors that you can't actually afford to punish. I remember at a LAN during an SC2 tournament as a GM I nearly lost to a Gold zerg in ZVZ (it was an open BYOC tournament with random groups). He wasn't anything special, his micro was awful, but he understood the game and his macro speed was incredible he kept up with me. But then when he had me against a wall rather than starving me, chose to pull the trigger and in typical gold player fashion attack moved his entire army into my natural and I blew him up. 5 more minutes of him simply continuing to do what he was already doing and I'd have lost. I'd simply never seen an opener as aggressive as his before neither did I expect a gold player to have the macro capability to back up an economy behind it; normally when low elo players attempt aggressive openers they don't macro behind it very well and supply cap/pool resources. It massively caught me off. TLDR I don't think Hans cheated. I think he just played out his fucking head.

You could theoretically buy the exact same wand they use to scan you. Then you can experiment and see what materials it can see through and which ones it can't. You could then find a material that's both safe for a human ass and blocks the scans from the wand and make a but plug with a radio reciever and a rumble motor. Edit: you could then have a radio transmitter, transmitting the encrypted moves along with noise that the reciever is programed not to read during the match. To cover your ass even better you could transmit the noise for a few months before you plan to cheat and then a few months later.

First off I'd like to thank you Penguin for keeping it with the facts, and not the emotional garbage that has shat it's way upon the net. You kept it open, you kept it real, and as a fellow chess player I truly admire that. Now onto the show. A decade or so ago, a group of buddies of mine were asked by a high (not pro) level chess player to devise ways of cheating. So we did. We came up with hearing aids with vibe function that could beep very softly but gently vibrates the ear canal. We have thought of glasses with thick sides that could house a small vibrating receiver. Fake skin along the collarbone area to conceal a small transmitter. Basically most avenues of cheating currently available with present technology. And our conclusion was simple. There only needs to be a low level "jamming field" covering the 2.4GHz and 5GHz region and that alone would eliminate about 90% of the cheating. But.....and I do stress BUT....there are other frequencies ,and even the use of light patterns emanating from a small, mid infrared laser that could potentially be picked up by a set of contact lenses specially made to "see" a particular wavelength and others would not see it. The "lights" would be simply aimed at the player and a morse code to transmit the chess notation (1 thru 8 vertical and A thru H horizontally). After that it would only need to say 1 dot for 1 vertical and 1 dot for A (2 dots total) and for say H2 to H4 would be 4 dots to indicate Vertical Line destinstion of H4 and 8 dots to indicate the Pawn at H2. So it would be saying "move pawn at H2 two steps to H4. Now I'm sure a more compact code could be devised, but this is just a VERY basic way to send cheat moves. It seems extremely difficult and elaborate, but there have been cases of transmitters being in a pant cuff and an individual in a bathroom or room that isn't visited with a computer rig sending moves.

Below are critical clarifications needed/missing from this analysis from what i understand of this situation: 1 - That high level of security shown in this video was added after the match Magnus lost. There wasn't security as intense for that original Magnus-Hans game, and Hans lost his subsequent match to a lesser opponent after the beefed up security was put in place. 2 - A more likely theory that actual chess players are discussing is that Hans had an informant from Magnus' camp that leaked the line Magnus was preparing to play, which allowed Hans to study it ahead of time as he said he did. 3 - The line Magnus played is SUPER rare and unusual. It's extremely EXTREMELY unlikely that Hans would've studied it in prep for this game if her hadn't been tipped off. 4 - It's believed Magnus chose that line specifically to try and bait Hans to see if he'd play like a bot, which would indicate he's cheating because there would be almost no way he should've been familiar with that line. 5 - Magnus has lost to lower tier players in the past, and has been very public and gracious with his praise of their play and/or his willingness to admit his mistakes in his own play during those games. In other words, Magnus has never implied anyone has cheater before, even after unexpected embarrassing losses, so this being a sore loser ego play by Magnus is very unlikely. 6 - The post match interviews from their competition are way more damning than this video makes them sound. All serious chess players get MAJOR red flags from those interviews, as Hans can't even explain the calculations of certain moves that players way below his rating could easily explain (something nerves shouldn't effect), and he over and over again just says "the move speaks for itself" or "it's obvious" but he never actually seems capable of explaining the play at all.
@jordanlarson64882 жыл бұрын
Even if all of that is true, there's always the possibility Hans just got borderline impossibly lucky and played the exact right moves despite not understanding the line. Again, extremely improbable, but not impossible. All the signs point to some thing very fishy, but we may never know for sure.

Either Hans has figured out some astronomical, undetectable, past the point of human recognition way of cheating, or Magnus is just a big baby. I chose to believe the latter. Sometimes in rare instances with two high level chess players, an individual just plays better. Its not beyond the scope of reality that Carlsen just didn't play as good. Anyone who has played chess for a while will tell you, even against a worse opponent, things can just happen that you don't predict, or you can just have a fluke game. I just think all the chess purists and Magnus fart inhalers can't accept the fact that their messiah has lost a game and refuse to give credit where it is due to Hans, which is in and of itself a very sad thing. chess is known for being a very gatekeeping game so to see all of this unfold is VERY unsurprising.

«Magnus is just a big baby» he has literally never acted this way and is extremely respectful when it comes to losing. In every other instance he lost he has came to the conclusion "he played better than me and I played poorly" but this time he acts completely different. Magnus is super respected because he’s not cocky and admits when he played poorly.

Magnus never accused anyone though. He simply left the tournament and didnt provide a reason why. He never once mentioned Hans or cheating. Thats just what everyone else assumed. Like, I honestly dont know why everyone is giving Magnus so much shit over this. He actively didnt say anything or accuse anyone. Sure, maybe he did think Hans cheated and thats why he left, but he never said anything about it. He actively avoided doing such and kept his opinion to himself if that really is why he left.

@@eragon78 Losing a game, quitting suddenly right afterwords with no reason, then posting on twitter a video of another cheating scandal and being like "it is what it is". "Calm down, he beat me and its all good. My heart wasn't in it that day, that's all". Is he such a shut-in that no one is informing him whatsoever of whats going on? @@Kmosely42 Sounds like speculation to me. Again, Han's name was never mentioned. Cheating was never mentioned. This would literally NEVER hold up in a court of law, I have no idea what youre going on with there. Its just wrong. You guys have no real proof of what Magnus's intentions really were. Sure, we can speculate on it and think that is what he meant, but this is the same thing people are getting pissed about when people speculate Hans cheated. Its all just speculation. Its the exact same thing. The truth is, Magnus never mentioned Hans's name, and never mentioned cheating. he didnt accuse anyone. Now sure, maybe he was trying to stir something up, or maybe he has other reasons we dont know about. Maybe he wants all this drama to be going on, or maybe he just doesnt want to get involved and stay out of it because its online drama and it never goes well engaging with that stuff. The turth is we dont know. Again, its all speculation. I can speculate too. What if he didnt say anything because he suspects someone on his team leaked his prep? that could easily explain why he dropped out of the tournament without giving a reason as its a matter he likely wants to handle privately without exposing to the public. It would also explain why he isnt saying anything now as he doesnt want to make a statement on it before the matter is resolved, as it could tip off whatever investigation he is doing into his team. Of course I have no evidence for that, its merely speculation, but it also fits the situation. But thats the point, you guys are all speculating too and getting mad at everyone else for speculation. But at the end of the day, thats all it is. Speculation. Nothing conclusive was said at all. magnus actively did not accuse anyone of anything. Sure, him dropping out is weird, but he didnt say why. And even if he DID drop out because he thinks hans cheated, he still never disclosed that was the reason why. Thats NOT an accusation. Magnus has a right to drop out of a tournament if he doesnt feel comfortable playing in it. And he also has a right to not provide his reasoning for why he dropped out to the public. Everything past that is speculation by the public.

Funny thing is magnus didn’t even accuse hans of “cheating” on the board. If there was any suspicion from magnus it was most likely about someone from his camp leaking his preparation. It’s so funny to me how you can leave the internet on it’s own for an hour and they’ll think people are cheating in chess with anal beads lmao Edit: Also I really don’t think magnus owes anybody any explanation. He didn’t accuse anybody in any way. He basically just said he’s leaving the tournament because of something he doesn’t wanna talk about yet or at all, definitely insinuating he had a problem with something outside of just losing but again, I think it’s so much more likely that was about somebody leaking his prep if it was any sort of fair play violation not anal bead stockfish lol
@nCSirloin2 жыл бұрын
I don't think anybody unironically thinks Hans used anal bead vibrations to cheat, it was clearly just Elon being a hyperbolic meme machine. But the reality is that it's not an impossible scenario in fact it's especially easy to use technology to cheat over the board and as early as the 90s they were catching people cheating in chess with vibrating pagers and shit. (Also it's exponentially easier to cheat this way in a 2 hour classical tourney format, which is why him thinking for abnormally long times on moves that should of been simple and automatic made certain other super GMs extra sus of him) Combine this with his history of actually maliciously cheating in paid online money matches essentially trying to steal money from the honest players and it's actually not that big of a reach for him to do something of that nature over the board. The real question is are the metal detectors and RF scanners they use as fair play detection actually enough to stop a more modern technology based sophisticated cheating attempt? I know in this Video Charlie says cheating over the board in chess isn't common but he's just wrong there the reality is that it's actually insanely common they catch multiple people every year trying to cheat with technology or collusion in open tournaments around the world, and most of these open tournaments don't actively watch enough for cheaters to begin with so the fact that they catch any of them is very telling of just how common it is.

Even if he didn’t mean to accuse Hans of cheating, Magnus still has to have seen the reactions to his tweet. And if Magnus doesn't think Hans is a cheater, but allows half of the chess world to go after Hans without a simple "that's not even what I meant" is a major league dick move.
@janpham25912 жыл бұрын
The issue for me is that Magnus is basically radio silent throughout this whole drama while Hans is facing a possibly career ruining accusation, if Magnus didn't accuse Hans at least he should quickly clarify that he wasn't alleging a foul play (also I don't think he would withdraw from tournaments just because of a leaked preparation)

I don't understand why people think anybody on the internet deserves to explain themselves especially if its just a bunch of random people on the internet speculating about something he never said. The dick move is the people who are just claiming Hans is cheating without being open-minded that they might be wrong as there is still no physical evidence to prove that in the first place. Just because a bunch of people lack critical thinking doesn't mean Magnus should do anything in this situation.

Good video, Charlie covered everything very well, though I have one thing to add. The wanding and other measures (such as a 15 minute stream delay) were done after the game in question, so its possible Hans snuck something in for the first few games (which he played very well) and then couldn't cheat during the rest of the tournament (which he did not play as well). Furthermore there are other ways to cheat without technology, such as someone else giving signals. Still, we do not know for certain and may never know. Also in a few days another tournament starts with both Magnus and Hans participating, so there may be more drama on the horizon.

Two things: I watched the entire match in a move replay. 1. Magnus played poorly. Even a 1400 rated player can see the mistakes he made in trades after Neimann castled,, but especially when a GM breaks it down and shows all of the better choices. 2. The same 1400 player would easily recognize the freaking Catalan Opening. This wasn't "a rare line that Magnus never uses", it was a near text book Catalan right before the midgame. I'm dying to see the "evidence" that he cheated. Because at this point I see Magnus having a bad day.
@DoctorOaks2 жыл бұрын
The reason people find it weird is because, should state I don't know this for certain because I don't follow chess and am going off what people are saying here, there was only 1 recorded match where Magnus ever did that specific line. Not that it's a rare line. It's just rare for Magnus to do, and they found it strange that Hans said he specifically prepared for that line when practicing during his interview. It definitely could have just been him losing, but as people have noted Hans has had a history of cheating in the past. Even if he didn't cheat here I do think it'd be reasonable for people to question the win. I think one person pointed out the most probable answer though (assuming there WAS cheating): Someone from Magnus' team leaked his line prior to the match, and that allowed Hans to prepare for it.
