To me, the whole "Russian helping a non-Russian" thing is evidence that the game of chess really does transcend national boundaries. I mean, let's be real here. Very few people cared or maybe even realized that Magnus and Nepo were "representing" specific countries. They're just two fantastic players duking it out for the world title.
@alpha007org3 жыл бұрын
OK, but on the other hand, title "Chess champion _insertYear_" because a strange thing for me personally. If you pick two GMs in top 20 (or maybe top 50), every pair could draw 14 games straight. Such is the state of chess in current times. Nepo had to try to create imbalances, because if you look back, after ~20-25 moves in every game they could start trading to oblivion and draw the game.

If MVL had won the candidates, should Laurent Fressinet have had to leave Carlsen's team? Also, if Russia is dumb enough to shun Dubov over this, he won't have too much trouble finding a new home.
@MAC00712343 жыл бұрын
I think Fressinet had said that he would of course be on the team MVL. I think it was in the World Cup commentary (I could be wrong about the event) where he was commentating with Jan Gustafson for chess24. Unlike the common misconception about the French people, they are actually very patriotic. I don't think Ian minds though, although they are very good friends and also teammates, so it could be very awkward. Even if they don't say anything or behave as if its not a big deal. Cos even if one of them doesn't even think about it, the other guy might have that nagging feeling that the other person is thinking about it. Frankly I am a bit surprised cos I thought Dubov WAS on the Nepo team. Especially since Nepo's and Dubov's style is so similar. It would have been great to have him analyse certain positions for Ian and come up with stuff that would actually naturally be great for Ian. On the other hand, having Dubov on Magnus's team would have been such an asset since its pretty much like having Ian on Magus's team. Lolz.

@martinpaddle3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Magnus having a Russian coach on its own would have been such an issue. It's a bit different, becasue Dubov is a teammate of Ian. The play under the same federation and in the same team at team championships and Olympiads. Hiddink, Capello, and Eriksson (as England coach) didn't have a function for their home federation at the time. Hikaru, for example, said in his stream that he wouldn't accept an invitation to be Magnus' second if he was facing Caruana or Wesley So. It's like saying to your teammate: sorry, but I wanted your opponent to win. Now Dubov makes the argument that the world champtionship is an individual award, you represented yourself and not your country, and he happens to feel closer to Magnus. He's right in my opinion, but the coach analogy is still not quite correct.

@jetlag you are mixing things up. Here Dubov being in Magnus team, He is not playing on the board. He is finding ideas but it's Magnus who plays it. Dubov being in Russian team he plays on the board and not sharing any idea with others but strategies. Coach in Magnus team, player in Russian team.
@martinpaddle3 жыл бұрын
@@vahiddj81 it doesn't matter. A foreign coach in football would never have any paid role within his home country's federation, as player or else. Hiddink would not have coached Russia while playing for Holland. It's a conflict of interest. That's essentially Karpov's argument. The argument in Dubov's favour here is that Magnus is playing against Nepo as an individual, and not as a representative of the Russian Chess federation.

Magnus made a joke about something like that when they asked him who he would most like on his team, dead or alive, in one of the interviews. The player he mentioned (with specific year) later challanged the person he assisted and won. It certainly crossed his mind he might have to face Dubov someday.

Hammer has previously worked with Carlsen, so he probably wouldn't offer to help a future opponent of his old boss. As far as I'm aware Tari never has, so he would be a free agent if either player wanted to ask him for help in a future match. Karjakin's comment shows the mindset of the old Soviet school, when they all worked together against Fischer (and later Korchnoi). Times have moved on - no-one is obliged to help one side rather than the other because they're the same nationality.

Dear Sergey Karjakin (and other Russians that are salty with Dubov). The success of Carlsen should be deemed a success of Russian Chess. Kasparov once trained Carlsen; Nepo once helped Carlsen. Most of principles of Soviet chess have been adopted by many countries and many elite GMs around the world. Russians should be proud of the work done by Dubov for Magnus. You know Sergey, I am a patriotic guy and have strong national pride. But your patriotism and pride are misplaced. There are times to be patriotic, there are times to be professional, there are times to be friends with people of different race/citizenship, and there are times to be human.

Dubov joined Carlsen in 2018. So this drama is very odd, Karjakin is being a sore loser. The nationalism in chess is very weird, Did Dubov tell Nepo to play c5? , Don't think so... Also, like I said if Dubov joined Carlsen 2 months ago, I could argue but since he has joined in 2018, this is not even arguable. Also, didn't Karjakin switch Ukraine to Russia lol, that seems more betrayal to me, ngl.
@kristofferb-e13373 жыл бұрын
Some of the members on this Nepo team came with help to Carlsen, in the world cup in India. They had some ideas about how to beat Anand. It is said that Magnus used these ideas in one of the winning games. They would rather see Magnus than Anand as champ. I think this is a sore man"s (Karjakin) feeling. Two times involved against Carlsen, in World Cups, and both times losing.

Norway isn't really a country that is big on rivalries. So I don't think Dubov should be criticized for his assistance. The fact that Chess is important in Russia is respectable and a great sign of sounf cultural prioritization. These days though everyone respects the greatest player is based on what happens on the board without interference. So despite Chess players feelings, Chess has become respected enough to be beyond any national boundaries. We should be happy about this. Russia for its part has so many strong GMs and even their NM are GM strength so without doubt they will earn back the title at some point.

You know this game is actually drawn? After ..Rf6, White has to check the king first and then take the c8 rook with his queen, and only then take the rook with the bishop (otherwise Black has a back rank checkmate). This leaves White with a queen and a 2:1 pawn majority on the kingside (the queen will pick up a pawn once the swaps are done) vs a bishop, a knight, and three connected passed pawns on the queenside. It's a fortress: the queen can only sacrifice itself once, and it's actually not that hard to keep everything protected in a little mobile house around the king. If White tries to push its 2 to 1 majority, Black has more than enough pawns to win the race, forcing White into passivity. Try it yourself - use any engine you like. In the resigned position, Leela sees it as basically drawn immediately - Stockfish thinks White is winning, but follow its recommended moves and it eventually figures out that White can't make progress. It makes no difference if White first plays something like a4 to take away the back rank threat before bishop takes rook in order to preserve a rook on both sides - the three pawns and two minor pieces are just too good at defending the King. There are very few only moves: a human supergrandmaster could probably do it in classical time control if they managed to see beyond White's position looking overwhelming. You have to know it's there before you start looking for things like how to move the knight to the defense of the king with tempo, what's the best diagonal for the bishop to occupy, etc.

One can acknowledge both perspectives without disparaging either side. For some people the WCC and perhaps chess in general is a matter of national pride, as such players should receive all national support, and can be viewed as a team - and in which crossing lines is kind of offensive. For others, the WCC and also chess in general, has very little to do with a person's nationality. For them it does not matter if all of Russia's GMs assisted Magnus or if all of Norway's GMs assisted Ian. I don't think one side is necessarily right or wrong here. But from my perspective nationality has not mattered in chess for a very long time, except for explicitly nationality-based team chess battles.
