Disagree. Yes, you can know. Or so *I* think. What one quality sparkles for every true talent in chess? We can say preparation... precision... knowledge... memory... stamina... etc. But when those things all seem present, I have seen the players that transcend the others ulrimately exhibit what we call creativity, that ability to find ideas that remain unseen for the most part by others. Alireza has that. He will someday challenge Magnus, if his emotions don't get the better of him. But will he supplant him? THAT is not so easily known.

Perhaps the reason is something like, Bishops are good if their range matters, and a bishop pair is good if you're attacking. In this case, neither was the case; Alireza just always had the initiative and the Bishops never got to do anything but defend. In that role they don't seem very strong, they only really cover a few relevant squares.

Vladimir Kramnik once said that he feels that against two bishops, it's almost always better to have two knights instead of the knight bishop combo, since knights will coordinate better and they thrive under completely different conditions to bishops which you can aim to create, thus rendering opponents bishops useless. Of course, I assume he too would take two bishops in equal positions, or two pawns up with any minor piece combo.

Alireza's brilliancy: He knows Gabriel wants to play Qxg6, so he plays Qb8 in support of Rb3, which would attack white's dark-squared bishop on a3, and if Gabriel then takes the rook with Bxb3, then Alireza takes back with his queen, which now attacks white's dark-squared bishop on a3 and leaves the white queen on g6 hanging as black's f7 pawn is no longer pinned by white's bishop. This equals a free piece. So white DOESN'T take black's g6 pawn with the queen! I understand this, if it's explained to me, but damn it's deep! These top players are perceiving and parrying threats that are more moves in than most people can understand.

I know it's actually quite a way away (as he'd need 3 wins or 2 wins and 2 draws and no losses) but I would love to see him reach 2800. He's been playing so well in classical after the disappointment at the World Cup - for those angry he's stopped streaming or put blitz and bullet to the side in favour of classical tournaments, here is why. He'd be the youngest 2800 GM by quite a margin if he reached it.

At 5:56 and a few moves earlier, actually the white black square bishop is defended. If the black queen captures it, she falls through the white square bishop checking the black king.

"Two pawns are two pawns, but on the other hand the bishop pair is the bishop pair." Can't argue with Agadmator facts, though on this occasion the analysis ended too soon as we did reach the observation that "a knight is a knight" and "knights are tricky bastards" 😁

We are always told that knights defending each other are weak but in this game and many others they seem to do very well.

If I didn't know how is playing black I would say it is younger magnus, The same solid but dynamic style, crazy endgames skills and precision. Alireza has changes a lot since the beginning of 2021, his middle games don't rely on tricks and tactics as much and his end games skills improved significantly, It would be interesting to see him battling it out with the top tier guys or if keeps his pace for another year it can be just a dupoloy battle between him and magnus.

@agadmator Hello, just since I know care about the correct pronunciation of the foreign names, It seems like you pronounce Alireza like it is Alire"i"za. The correct Persian pronunciation does not have any hidden in-between "i". The name is a combination of two names "Ali" + "Reza" which are both Arabic names basically. Regards

4:53, is Black really so much worse if they allow the bishop to capture the rook? Knight on F can take the past pawn and white trades one of their most active pieces for a rook - so 2 pawns (1 of which was past) and a very active bishop for a rook? It doesn't seem worth to me but I'm not great at chess so maybe someone can explain to me
