Caro-Kann Defense is considered to be one of the most solid openings in chess. If you are about to face this opening, you might expect a strong strategic battle, and not be afraid of this sentence, the game can turn out to be pretty dull.
In this video lesson, the RCA guest coach IM Mat Kolosowski will show you a couple of ideas that can be used to make things more exciting on the board. He will also show you a couple of inaccuracies or opening mistakes that you might see from your opponents, and most importantly, how to take advantage of those.
After 1.e4 c6, the classical approach is to play 2.d4 which is practically always met by 2...d5. However, there's an interesting alternative 2.Nf3, which leads to the two knights variation. This is exactly what IM Mat will be talking about in this video.

I played the second trap with Qb3 with success a few times vs opponents around my rating (2000 blitz), but I was not aware of the first trap with Bc4. Gonna try that soon! Thank you sir!

14:45 just take the black queen on d5. After recapturing from c6, you go bishop b5+. If king moves to d8,you go to f7 with knight and you just win. If not so,what else can happen? Nc6 or Nd7. Nd7 just gives you a free knight. If black goes Nc6, then you just take on c6 with your knight and then check with bishop, taking the rook on a8. So Qf3-Qd5 is just not an option for black.

I had a similar position where white took my rook and then I trapped the queen(11:55). Stockfish found a better move for me where instead of castling, you bring the Knight on f6 over to b6, sealing the Queen's fate.

I used this trap in a league game and won. I saw this in another video worth remembering. The best line is 8 bishop c4 and then 9 queen e2 with a great game. And if black plays any of the knight's out you play knight takes f7 winning.

At time 14:40 white can simply take Qxd5, cxd5, Bb5+, Nc6, Nxc6 (or Kd8, Nxf7+) game over 🙂

I like the Caro-Kann because it does just that: it negates my opponent's aggressiveness. Often, its enough to get me the mental advantage.

Why not Ba6 to help the Queen out? (Instead of the 3-moves-lasting rook-manuver?

12:26 Humble question, can't black just make 2 moves with his F6 knight to capture the white queen?

after a4 Nd5/Nd7, a5 locks down the b6 square and the knight can't get in, and is even worse than before because he has wasted time and allowed white to develop his rook.

On 14:40 simply exchange Queens on d5 and then check by Bb5+. What would be wrong in this case?
