Very useful survey of the Vienna game with 3.g3. I used to think that this was a slow positional line, but this video shows it can be very aggressive and exciting. The fact that white can choose between flank attacks or central play gives the opening a lot of flexibility.

Ya it honestly fits with all styles of play, breaking through the center or going aggressively after the king... white can also go for more of a positional approach and simply play d3 without f4 and play more of a quiet game. I personally am more of an aggressive player but for those that want to be more cautious it totally works. Another advantage of this opening is that it's positionally sound even when attacking, this is not necessarily true for all chess openings, like the King's Gambit for example.

For a long time I was baffled at what the point of b4 (at 3:13) driving the Bishop to b6 was. I just realized it simply gains space on the queenside. Duh!

That's a great question! Nd5 is a good move which attacks the bishop and it performs really well. If Ba5, for example, we can play Qg4 and then after g6 we can continue with b4 followed by a4 or Qf3 or Qg3 and white has a nice game to work with there.

Both of these are great options! I think in this video I talked about g3 but Bc4 and/or f4 are great options especially depending on what the opponent plays. If 2. ...Nf6, 3. f4 is a fantastic option for the white side. What do you think?

At 1:30 why not play Na4? Get rid of that pesky bishop aiming at your king. It's not a bad bishop because it's outside of the pawn chain, right? Isn't it better - even if trading minor pieces tends ultimately toward a more drawish or less-attack-y game?

I just played this tonight OTB in a classical tournament. (I played Na4 after Nc6, like you describe at 7:18.) I beat someone rated 1740! (I'm ~1500.) Thanks for this great video.

What about 2. knight C6 instead of knight F6? Very common at my level ~1500 Is it still a Vienna game? I think most prefer the Vienna Gambit after knight F6. I'm lacking a clear cut plan against knight C6.

Yep it is still the Vienna Game! Ya against Nc6 we can play Bc4 and d3 or g3 Nge2 and 0-0 and white has a playable game there. Hope this helps!

Any lines I should study after black goes knight to C6 on move 3? I want to play bishop to C4 but that makes my pawn to G3 on move 3 look really stupid.

Hey brotha! Good question man. I think after a move like Nc6 we can just develop like normal by playing Bg2, Nge2, 0-0, maybe h3 somewhere in there, and then soon make a d4 or f4 (f4 is my favorite) push. By playing Nc6, black isn't putting any pressure on d5, and it's gonna be a lot harder for them to play this anytime soon especially after we just played Bg2 attacking that square with a knight, pawn, and bishop. Hope this helps!

d5 instead of e5 I'm assuming? Ya that's a lot of different things that we can do against that. The main line is to take on d5 and then play Nc3 (kicking that queen around) followed by Nf3 and solid development. I personally like playing the Lizard Attack though, I will drop a link below which transposes into the Lizard Attack and idk you might like it. No pressure, just in case you want to check it out. Ok. Thanks! I'll study up on it. I normally play the KIA and want to start E4. If Black plays D5, then my original idea was d4xd5 then transpose to the Vienna game but maybe I can just go straight for the Lizzard instead.

Great question Jonathan! So ya if we see this move we can simply capture the queen off with ours, and then once the pawn takes our queen we can capture that rook on b8. Hope this helps!
