It makes sense since I'm strong with my tactics on the attack, but weak with my positional play and openings. Very interesting and multilayered position. Thanks Igor

About 2200, for me it was a winning position once the queen was targetting G7 (from G4) with support from a knight. Not even D2 was threatening at that point. I didn't calculate all the way to m8, but I could see that it was unstoppable.

Hey, thank you, I really love these kind of videos with testing your rating while solving a puzzle. I came up to 1600, I thought it is enough to find the best next move.. should have known that there might be more to calculate.. xD you are also explaining very well and that helps me a lot to know how to think and go on to the next level. I get those Ideas and see myself with a little bit of effort also climbing to a higher rating.. will try just calculating further on next time. :D

Thanks to Igor! I got 2400 as a result, along with my Lichess rating being 1800+ currently. Also in educational speaking, I just found it pretty instructive to test out one's weak points in chess through this kind of quiz, although to be fair, all of which you have made seem to be focused on tactics and calculation. Besides, I wish there would be more of them being focused on strategies and valuation, given the fact lots of players around my level usually overdepend on their calculation, spending most of the time trying to "solve" almost every position even in a positional play. That would be significantly helpful! ❤️

I didn’t see let alone consider Black’s Queen sac, the stunning Qe3! That amazing sac is type Hikaru, Magnus, or Caruana might see instantly! Cool tactical test. But I didn’t play Qd3 just because it save the queen. I calculate that it will forced weakness around opponent’s king and gives me two very good bishop. I properly check that there’re no stuff like fork on d2, e2, e3 forcing black have to save his dark square bishop and after I play Bc2 it becomes safer and more active while at the same time forcing g6 making my dark squares bishop very active. I didn’t calculate further since I don’t know where black will place his dark square bishop (both h4 and h6 looks reasonable) but I do notice idea like f5 (which is different from f5 in the video because this one doesn’t threaten a piece but will be played to force the king open using g7 hook and loose light square bishop).

(1500 Blitz 2000? Rapid) First I calculated Ba4 b5 Bxb5 Qxb5 Qxg4 Bh6 Nf5, then I totally forgot to think about Qe6. After you mentioned it, I did calculate f5 Bxd1 fxe6 Bxa4 exf7. This is the best I can do in 5~10 minutes.

My national rating is 1500 but got only the 1000 mark by playing Qd3, saving the queen and expecting some nice follow up with Bc2 and considering the fact that the bishop on g5 is still under attack. I never considered Ba4, who knows why. But having seen that possibility, I honestly think I would have got a much higher mark that my national rating. All that taken into consideration, the gradation used for this evaluation is not reliable in my situation. It might work for some other players though. Thanks for this kind of content. I think it is quite instructive.

I didn't initially see Qe3+ for black after f5 but while you were analyzing I saw the check before you mentioned it. But the point is obviously I need to assess and understand this move before moving into the explanation. Thanks for this video, It's been a real eye opener. I think playing this way and thinking at this level in every game is difficult for me. I play too many fast games. and loose on time. I found out my rating may be low due to not restarting my router more often due to high and unpredictable latency. I would encourage any player who has trouble calculating to learn and remember co-ordinates of the board. This is something I struggle to do but I know if I plugged that hole in my understanding I would be able to do solid analysis. All to often, I understand an idea and calculating method and that's one thing. But I can't remember the right move order in more complex interactions and combinations on the board. So half the time I play moves that are simply not thought out right.

Really liked this exercise. I only took about a minute to calculate so I didn't go thru everything. I definitely was eyeing pretty quickly ba4. I calculated a few responses past that. I didn't think too much on what to do if they didn't trade queens, but certainly looked at either way keeping the bishop focused at the queen, meaning I would capture on b5. So I guess with this exercise I was between 1800 and 2000. My actual rating is very close to 1600.

Thanks Igor - this puzzle was extremely accurate and predicted my 1,000 Elo exactly. I was mindful of Rapid time control, it would've been better for me to go classical and write everything down for calculation. I have a long ways to go with Chess to be really good, I did not see the key move for White that leads to the advanced lines. One possible issue at this Elo I think is "Diagonal Blindness," I am prone to getting blindsided on my diagonals on occasion.

Before watching the actual solution I’m gonna share my solution as a 1200 rated player. I’m a puzzle freak and love solving things way harder than my skill level. I’m not saying my solution is right though. I think the best move is Ba4 and without knowing why right away it’s the first move I looked at. I set up the position on a real board and spent 5-10 minutes calculating multiple lines with Ba4 and confirmed this has to be the move. After Ba4 if black takes whites queen, you take blacks queen with a rook fork. You will win a rook, a queen and a bishop for a queen and a bishop. Black simply doesn’t have the time to defend both bishops in the end. However there’s b5 for black but this doesn’t work either. I calculated the following variation which I believe is the best moves for both sides leaving white with an advantage at the end. 1. Ba4 b5 2. Bxb5 Qxb5 3. Qxg4 Bh6 4. Nf5 Qc6 5. Nxg7 Qg6 6. Qxg6 hxg6 7. Nxe8 Rxe8 White has 2 rooks and a bishop for blacks rook, bishop and knight. Again, I’m not 100% this is the solution but I’m 90% sure that’s it’s something along these lines with similar moves. There’s just nothing else for white that I can see to gain an advantage here.

I saw the a4 queen/rook skewer, black queen to e6, white queen d3, bishop e2, pawn f5, Bxd3, fxe6, Bxf1, exf7+, Kxf7, Rxf1+, K moves wherever, Bxe8, Rxe8 ending on and endgame with most of the pieces traded off, and the pawns on the kingside equalized hopefully leaving a winning endgame for white with the queenside pawns all connected. But like you said at the start of the video, I probably would've never calculated so deep in a live game unless I knew something was there from the getgo like with this puzzle or having seen the position before and studying it. I didn't see pushing f5 in response to queen e6 or the resulting check at e3. I'm not sure if I'm 2000 or 2600.

U1200 isnt about if you spot an obvious hanging queen(most U600 i think would spot it and not completely blunder), its about consistency. Im 500 in rapid and i often play decent 1000-1200 rated games, but sometimes i go on downward spirals of playing poorly. I know enough to be 1000+ easily but its mostly about consistency and mindstate while playing that hinder my rating. This also seems common, ill face 400s who are playing like 1200 and see they also also just have losing streaks and dont consistently play well. Its hard to teach being consistent i guess.

The funny thing is that I see the "correct" line which is 1. Ba4 Qe6 2. Qd3 and black's rook and bishop is double attacked and lose material. I see 1. B*d1 doesn't work for black. And I completely forget the line 1. ... b5. I also do not consider 2. f5 myself after 1. ... Qe6. Although the line I consider happens to be the best line, it still shows huge difference between me and advanced players😂

Hi, currently my average performance in classical tournaments is around 1900 ELO. I calculated 1. Ba4 until your proposed rating of 2000 and stepped over to 1.Qd3, because I expected more options for bad decisions of black there. I gain a lot of pressure with this mating attack.

2000. I did see f5 - but failed to see that after ...Bxd1, the B is also attacking a4. Only after hitting play did I notice that the f5 pawn would also attack f7 with devastating consequences after taking the Q. I did calculate ...b5, Bxb5, Qxb5, Qxg4 - but said "well, great position, up a pawn, still attacking the B so great line" without seeing the other ramifications - the checkmating threats first of all - so no 2100 for me. On ...Qe6 I didn't consider moves other than f5 - so failed to see Qd3, therefore no 2200. I was of course completely blind to the idea of ...Qe3+!! - simply because I wasn't looking for it. This move (from the original position) was way way way above my pay grade... indeed - I never had any success playing GMs under equal conditions... My actual FIDE rating is just under 2000. I'm a bit out of shape these days, though, as I'm much more into backgammon (where I'm a regularly competing master).

2:24 I'm 780 rated and I thought of the bishop a4 move but also didn't notice that threat on the queen

I didn't find Ba4, I figured that Qd3 was safe, and that the opponent would likely move his bishop to escape the pawn threat (which was protected by the rook), and then you could move Bc2, creating a battery towards the h7 pawn. Opponent might respond g6, but then you can bring in your knight perhaps, e.g. to h5. I am about 1000 elo, but puzzle is ~2000-2050. I feel like I am coming down with a cold, and tilted my puzzle rating this morning. Which is perhaps why I think I didn't see the bishop move, which embarrasses me a little. My puzzle rating has jumped about 1000 in 90 days, after I started doing your advice of 5 minutes a day of puzzles, and bumped it up to about an 30-60minutes or so. 5 minutes of openings, 10-15mins of openings, and 10 minutes of game analysis. I'm doing all that, probably more, through chessable with openings. It is a long grind to even learn a couple openings thoroughly. And I've slowed my chess down, I try to do 15/10s so I can do more calculation. Only about 1 a day now, I figure it makes more sense to drill openings/puzzles than to practice "wrong moves" in games. Reality is though, one puzzle is not an adequate sample size to gauge playing strength. It may be a little of an indication. I just solved a 2070 rated puzzle this morning (also tilting a bunch of others). Does that make me a 2070 level chess player? Of course not. It does give me hope - I figure if I know the first 9-10 moves of an opening, an inexperienced opponent probably makes a mistake, I can capitalize and then convert the position to a win through material or position. 10 moves of a game is 1/3 to 1/4 of a the typical number of moves for a game, so that's very significant - to be able to play perfect chess for up to 1/3 of the time - at 1000 elo, most of my opponents won't be. Meanwhile, puzzles will get my computation ability strong, for tactics. Then it's end game study if I can't get a dominant position by the end game. It might be a year or two of study to get to that point. I like your stuff youtube content often, though I find it seems more geared to people who have a lot of memory and can remember lots, which is not my strength. I tried the Evans gambit for a while, though it seemed not universal enough for my needs. Some of the tips have been very helpful though - the idea of being uncomfortable with having pieces in your territory (and doing the same to the opponent), and "to take is a mistake" are both key nuggets of wisdom. You are an actual GM, which is higher than some IMs I have found most helpful. So I respect that, although I have to select what I think is likely to work for me with my own limitations.

I see everything (i get 2200), but I somehow lose to my lower rate opponent player(I'm 1600, and he's 1200). My tactic is sharp but I just can't see anything in real games. What's wrong?

@JonaasK Sorry for the mistakes, I don't remember which rating before Magnus rating

Flattering but I'm definetly not a 2400, my rapid rating is 907 and puzzle rating is 1750. This position was somewhat easy to evaluate because having the queen in check clarifies priorities, games tend to be less obvious most of the time.

I got 1600 for this video. Would love to see more of these, this was so helpful!!

I got to 2200, really proud as I started playing chess last year

Thank you, Igor, I made 2200. In a real game, I'd play Qb3 at some time, allowing the Nd2 triple fork, so I'm a 600 IRL :-)

At 15:11 black should not take with knight but instead put fork with the horse IMHO:)

Interesing, I have nearly reached 2600 level but considered Be3+ instead of Qe3+!! For some reason did not look at that brilliant queen check! But there king just moves to h1 and black still has hanging rook, queen and f7 if Bxd1 and whilte plays fe. But I play (only) classic on lichess (15+15 and 30+0), my rating being 2100-2200, which could be lower than real rating because I face so much cheaters (and only small part of them is banned, more precisely - only those who play top engine moves every move in many games). Anyway thanks for nice puzzle!

Honestly at first I didn’t find out the Ba4 but after that I calculated all the lines before GM level by myself. What should be my rating then? Although I was having my Dinner at that time. 😅

Damn, made it to the "2400 level" (rated ~2100 in real life) and started looking at ...Be3+ ideas, but ...Qe3+? That's a whole different level of insanity...
