@@ASZ951 Almost no one plays the Evans Gambit in a classical game anymore, as grandmasters have looked at hundreds or thousands of Evans gambit games and know how to quickly achieve equality. Gary is the last player who I can think of who used it and won games with it. Grischuk has used it in blitz a few times, and so has Naka. It worked maybe ok there. But back when Evans invented it, it was feared. The sea captain won games against professional chess players, and in the hands of Morphy or Andersson it destroyed. It wasn't until the early 20th Century that people really figured out how to deal with it.

I get he's about to be DESTROYED by Morphy, but I really do recommend agad, and this community in general, check out some of Bird's victories. The guy wasn't a slouch and won the very first "Brilliancy Prize." Also, the guy played an absolutely BONKERS WILD style of chess you simply do not see anymore. The matches against Morphy aren't doing Bird justice, because Bird's prime was later. He didn't really blossom until he was in his 40s. Here, he hasn't even invented his opening yet.

At the position shown in 4:12, what is black's best defense against Qf4? They can no longer castle, so is black forced to play Rf8 to prevent Qf7#, or is there something I'm missing? Agadmator dismisses it, but it seems like 1. Qf4 Rf8 2. Qg4 Rf6 isn't so bad for white, since white's e-pawn is defended, making it hard for black to develop their queen, and thus hard for them to get to queenside castle. Agreed that that Ne7 line is still better for black than what was played, but not by a ton?

It is very bad for white because black is way too active, it doesnt really matter that you cant castle if you have a monster bishop pair, monster rook and soon to be a monster queen after the knight moves. White can not get enough defenders in time

Well, I may be wrong, but I don't see why F6 is particularily wrong. I mean, Morphy could have played knight to F6 with or without a pawn of F6. Almost any move would have the same result, including the h3 move that Agad suggested, right? In fact, Q to h6 is probably the only move that prevents the attack.

4:14, what about after Bc6 Qf4? The only good move from black is Rf8 and then when even if we don't take that we can attack rly well with the queen there, he can't castle and his king is stuck, he can't do anything with his bishop pair if gets mated

i would like to know, just curious, how many moves ahead a player like Morphy can actually envision. well could have envisioned. there had to be times He saw 15 or more moves ahead for the 1850s

You need to write a book. Your analysis is the absolute best that I've seen on KZbin. Very confused about the hypothetical position at 10:11. If White plays Nxf6, why can't Black simply respond with g7xf6?

Haven't checked with an engine but gxf6, Rg4+, Kf7 runs into the same idea agad describes with Qe7 so Kh7. Then there might be mate, but even if you're lazy, Rh4 wins the queen. Edit: I didn't see it but now I do, if Kh7, Qe7+, Kh6, Qg7#

The more I watch the Morphy saga, the more I come to believe that Morphy instinctively played in much the way AlpaZero has evolved to play. Favoring mobility and activity to material.

He's turning down his volume so as not to have an echo. That was the original reason anyway. I think it's just a bit now, and he does it even when he doesn't need to adjust the volume.
