Harrwitz style probably just was new to Morphy and he was also a good player in his own right. Not every one Morphy can figure out in Game 1. Just feel like he needed more time than usual to understand Harrwitz's play. Harrwitz didn't play nearly as crazy as everyone in that era, so it makes sense. But as the results show, once Morphy got comfortable, it was lights out.

@Pagan he beat all who challenged him , the rest avoided playing him. He played his first game at 6 yrs old. Was only allowed to play for few hours Sunday evening and read his first chess book when he was about 18 , played part time and self taught . Then quit by like 22yrs old or something as no one wanted to challenge him. So he was definitely good !

That's what I've been telling all along. Every one says Steinitz ushered modern era. But I've watched quite a bit of harwitz apart from Morphy-harwitz eight games. He really plays the modern defensive positional game. The reason probably Morphy lost the first three games. Then Morphy adjusted his style and beat him at his own game. Of course it's only my opinion and I'm no connoisseur of chess. But this is what I feel.

@agadmator there is a very interesting match between Harrwitz and Staunton btw. I think Harrwitz lost something like 9.5 to 11.5 BUT in 7 games Staunton got to premove Harrwitz's pawn and first figure, in the second 7 games he got to premove a pawn and two figures and only in the last 7 games Harrwitz was free to play what he wanted. He won all 7 of those and Lord, he absolutely degraded Staunton in those games, maybe we can get to see at least one of those? Also for anyone still doubting Harrwitz, regarding historical elo, he was the world's rank 1 player for 3 years. He also got paid by the owner of the Cafe de la regencia to play there full time. And I don't know if it was said in the comments to the first video, the historical Cafe de la regencia does not exist anymore, the building does, but there is no trace left of the Cafe. Instead there is a morrocan tourism bureau now.

Harrwitz played a workmanlike game -- no brilliant moves, but always the appropriate move without errors. Morphy didn't play an error-prone game, but he permitted himself to fall into a bad defensive position that a competent player could pick apart. He wasn't accustomed to playing anyone strong enough for his own mistakes to be exploited. No, I don't think he threw the game, he just assumed he could get by with a slovenly defensive structure and his opponent wouldn't be strong enough to exploit it.

This is how Americans win championships -- they spot their opponent the first two games. Don't believe me? Check this brief history... 1858 - Morphy "loses" the first two games to Harrwitz, and then... 1941 - The U.S. gives Germany and Japan a two-year head start in their bid for world domination, and then... 1972 - Bobby Fischer "loses" the first two games to Boris Spassky, and then... 2011 - The Vancouver Canucks take the first two games against the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final, and then... (note: I live in Vancouver, and that one really hurt!)
