The Budapest Trap looks to punish those players that develop their knights poorly and then try to "normal" looking moves instead of simple development moves.

People who've just started playing chess do this a lot. And i mean A LOT. Although you could just scare them away from chess forever by playing a trap like this and winning in two minutes, lmao

I am surprised that there is a name to this "trap" since it has practically zero chance of being seen in real play. What kind of White player would play 2. Nd2?

One who wants the opponent to be out of preparation. It never happens but it seems it happened once in Budapest.

This video is hilarious! One of the nice things about the Budapest is that it does have a lot of surprise value...very easy for a player unfamiliar with the opening to go wrong.

@MisterBoneman Ironically, people who play obscure openings like this are usually strong players (1800-2000) who really know what they're doing. They chose to master a "weaker" opening, with the knowledge that their expertise of that particular opening will catch many (equally strong) players off guard.

Anytime your opponent moves a knight into your territory, look at the board carefully, because there's a good chance he/she is up to something.

what's should I learn to get better? what helped you? one which really helped was how to take the queen when they try to pull a scholars mate/wayward Queen.
@juicenburg

@darwincosadr Nb4 puts the queen under pressure, Qe4, b5, (forks the knight and the queen) Then Nc2 (forking king and rook) followed up by the pawn taking the Knight on c4 or the pawn on e5 being taken due to insufficient defenders. Im sure there is even a better sequence then that to play but either way, getting the queen out would cause white alot of trouble

I want to ask : When black's play Qe7 attacking the e5 white pawn and what should black move if white play Qd5 ? (try to give more defender to the white pawn on e5?)
@AnimeTeikoku
@AnimeTeikoku 13 жыл бұрын
hey Kevin what if at 4:40 after the black queen comes to e7, the white queen comes down to d5? from there if the black keeps trying to pursue that pawn on e5, the white can simply take the advantage of black's lack of development, especially pawns, and attack?
@RSPwns

there is another trap in this opening that I was expecting to see, which I know a lot of people know, but if they don't then here it is. . 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e5 3 dxe5 Ng4 4 Nf3 Nc6 5 Bf4 Bb4+ 6 Nd2 (the reason that they play Nd2 in this instance is to avoid the possibility of a doubled pawn) 6...Qe7 7 a3 (this is obviously to kick the bishop away but is potentially a grave mistake) 7....Ngxe5 Nxe5 8 axb4 (this is greedy and not the correct move because there is now a mate in one for black). I hope this makes sense and I haven't made a stupid error because I have done it off the top of my head.

after black play Qe2 then white can play Qd5, what black should play then? Kh4 would be good but then again it can be a forced draw if white wants to (moving up and down his queen to the d file)

You can defend the pawn as white. The thing is, that you need to develope your bishop before the knights. Black can, of course, attack early on with his second bishop to prevent this (hence, the early Nd2 is a mistake), but even if he does, as white you can allwas bring your Queen to d5 and will defend the pawn.

black can still win the pawn back after ...N-b4,Q-d1...P-b5,N-a3...P-a6,since White's Knight is then out of the picture,Black can then take it next move.
