It hardly seems surprising to me that someone who has a phenomenal memory, the ability to calculate complex variations in his head accurately and rapidly, and who has spent years looking at an opponent across the board trying to read their expressions or body language to understand their mood and likely assessment of the position, is going to end up learning how to play a game that requires the ability to read people, the ability perform some fairly complex calculations in their heads, and have a phenomenal memory which helps memorise range charts and GTO play..... Magnus is one of the greatest chess players of all-time. Certainly top 3 and arguably the GOAT (I have him at #2, just behind Garry Kasparov). All of Magnus' qualities as a GM, his patience, his energy and stamina, his attention to detail and precision, his determination to extract every little advantage he can, all translate into being a good poker player.

Definitely has a lot of carryover potential. The hardest part of competitive chess is stress management when there is no physical release available like in competitive sports. You’re just sitting there unmoving as the stress builds in your body and the pressure mounting in your brain. On top of that being able to make logical unemotional moves while potentially feeling very emotional.

That last hand was so epic! Nick's tell was that he announced "$700" on the flop, but was completely silent the rest of the hand.. it looked like a bluffed flush draw.. @@benjaminadler2001 He can learn from it for sure, but he won't learn anything directly applicable to chess. "Mental strength" as the OP puts it is very vague. Carlsen already has the most mental stamina from all other chess pros so I took "mental strength" to mean some kind of skill. If we are talking about transferable skills or cognitive capacities (ex working memory, divided attention), then the literature is pretty clear on that (I can provide reference since im in that field if youd like)

Well tbh only one bad call. The AT one. The one with 72 he had incentive to play the 72 game and in the end how tf he knew he was beat that was just unlucky. All other times he stacked Botez's AJ AQ on that board. And then the last one he has good instinct on the call because the other guy is a noob hes not gonna bet 3streets with one pair hands like AK on this dangerous board so its either a set, straights or air. I thought Magnus was absolutely brilliant going over the first fold with KJ thinking Marianos should never shove Ace high there so KJ is basically Ace high in that case which could make a call. A lot of pros when they hero call they go through the same thought process but the amateurs in the comments willl never ever understand and thus never make as much money as the pros.

Having difficulty understanding the title of this video "poker prodigy". Is that because he was smart to fold the first hand with K high, or the 2nd hand where there was a 4 card straight on the board? Folding the trip 7's versus the full house was obviously a good move but he already had 90% of his chips invested in that pot.

Or, more simply, he lost 3 hands and wildly "hero called" the final one, which was when he could have been beaten by virtually any hand except a simple high card. Chess prodigy, absolutely, but don't give up the day job!

Welcome to poker, Magnus. Once you count a stack of chips, you can just line up another stack next to it. If they're the same height, they're the same amount. Even if they're tall.

Lol … I noticed that too… shows a lot of inexperience handling chips but his level of thinking is by far more advance at his stage than most poker players are at the same level of experience time playing
