In other sports/games you can agree to split winnings but even discussing a possibility of a non-game determined outcome is considered fixing/collusion. You're protecting your overall elo rank by not getting a loss, and if this wasn't the last game, you're purposefully affecting the rating of everyone else you played against.

I really dont like this outcome. I watched the entire event, it was like a good movie with a pathetic, unfinished ending. I also play chess from 40 years now, and for me, chess is about respect, sportivity, fair-play. This is a mockery to all the watchers, supporters, fans, beting houses, investers, sponsors and so on. This is a non-combat entirely unjustified. This is Magnus Carlsen abusing to his fame and a Nepo frighten to be beaten again. Shame on Magnus Carlsen for treating this event like his own private afair, and shame for FIDE to accepting it. Magnus should go away if he is so bored of chess - he is great, but fair-play is greater. Shame for Nepomiatchi for accepting it, i think he could finaly win a title without accepting that pathetic, turnishing proposal. In many other competitive games/sports even *discussing* the possibility of a draw with another player/team would be considered fixing. They could agree to a prize split, but anything that affects ratings/elo could be seen as protectionism/manipulating the elo of everyone else they played against. So in many other sports/competitive games, you can agree to a prize split, but you can't actually get to a shared win without discussing that possibility with the other player or team, and that's considering fixing. It's protectionism/manipulation because it keeps your elo safe, and directly effects the elo/rank of everyone else you played that day. Extend the logic to all the games, every player who showed up day 2 could have just agreed to draw to protect their rating, all placed "first", and there would have been no competition. Good vibes aside. This is a specific carve out for the two leading players, who by definition colluded for a specific result outside of an actual game.
