At age 19, Ivanchuk won a tournament ahead of both Kasparov and Karpov, with victories against both (Linares 1991). The only player ever to do so. He was inconsistent, but at his best he was amazing. Both players are very nice people, too.

Along with Paul Keres and Viktor Korchnoi, I would argue that Vassily Ivanchuk is among the greatest players never to have become the world champion. Something is wrong with Ivanchuk, a GM at his level consistently loosing on time, not by a margin but by about a full minute in many cases during 3 min games.. I am a huge fan of his, my favourite player but old age aside something else is at play here. Otherwise what is the point of playing 3 min games to sit for 30 to 45 seconds for moves in the middle and end game? It pains me to see him like this. 😢
